A grief-soaked love letter to her father. Adiechie's writing is so gentle, full of fresh pain, and poignant. I'm a bit baffled that this novel is so short because she paints a whole picture with her words, immersing you in her reality. The kind of novel I can see myself return to over and over again in life.

At the time when Amanda Gorman recited this poem on Inaguration Day, I thought this poem was immensely powerful. Now, 3 years later, I still think this poem is powerful but it's almost painfully optimistic.

... as soon as our eyes met I wished the world were not one black empty ruin of ashes and death. I wished it were fresh and beautiful, and that we were both living and had love to give each other.
I love how Anne Rice's writing sort of lulls you in and enchants you. The dialogue often feels intimate and sensual but at the same time, the story is also riddled with guilt, self-loathing, existential crisis, and so much grief and sorrow. Since I'm a fan of the movie and tv show adaption, I already anticipaated I'd enjoy this book and, yeah, I was right. I could read Louis and Armand's existential/ethical/religious discussions for hours.

What a fun, horrifying ride! Since the preceding novella has a quite similar set up, I feared that this story wouldn't offer anything new but that was definitely not the case! The book takes its time, lays out all the details one could lay out, and (quite like the mermaid myth) lures you in. Just like the novella, this book suffers from overexplaining, but I actually didn't mind as much. You can tell the author is quite passionate about the ocean and its (mythical) creatures, so the details really pulled me in and fascinated me.

Another text I read for a seminar at university. It was honestly a lot of fun. I liked that Fantomina was just as horny and (maybe even more) scheming and deceitful as her "love interest" Beauplaisir (a stupidly funny name given that he's literally just Some Hot Guy she fancies). It's definitely not without its flaws but even though Fantomina sort of gets punished in the end , I appreciated that she did what she did unapologetically (for the most part). Haywood's writing in this is very engaging and I'll definitely try to read more of her works.

I read this one for my Literature class and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It's layered and full of social commentary, specifically Defoe engages with themes like love/money, societal taboos, class and work, and also womanhood in a lot of ways. While the narrative becomes sort of repetitious after a while (Moll is in need of money, she finds a husband, something is wrong, they part ways, and repeat) and contains many instances of moralizing that were rather preaching (this might be intentional though?), I did like the glimpse into the ways in which a woman like Moll navigated her way through 17th/18th century British society.

I love body horror and cosmic horror, so this was a blast to read! It's short, has a solid build up, and I like the open ending that leaves you a bit unsettled. Can't wait to dive Into The Drowning Deep next (all puns intended).

Another well-done mystery-thriller in the Housemaid series! I sort of knew what to expect going in (having read The Housemaid) but I was still hooked and kept guessing along. That being said, I sadly have similiar issues with this one as I already had with The Housemaid. That is, fatphobia and negative remarks about adoption. Admittedly, it was The Villain who made those remarks but I can't help but notice it's once again the wife who makes these sort of comments. It's weird. Nonetheless, I'll probably pick up the next installment in the series as well.
