emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring reflective fast-paced

this is an exceptional memoir and i found so much of it not only informative, because i'm not super familiar with the quran, but also moving, reflective, touching, humorous, and relatable. the way lamya is able to connect these stories to pivotal moments in her life is remarkable. as a queer person i can definitely relate to the identity piece, not being able to fit in, feeling scared people will reject or hate you, and trying to find identity and community.

it's a book everyone should read. i absolutely can't recommend it enough. and i'll leave it there since it's a 5 star read and i can't normally form coherent thoughts about why 5 star books are so great. so - read it and find out.

i really wanted this book to be more. i felt like it had a huge reputation to live up to and it fell a bit flat. i love the characters, the setting, and descriptions. i felt like there were moments of excitement but mostly i just sat waiting for something more exciting to happen. it was a bit predictable as well. i feel like it was entertaining enough and i wanted to know what would happen but it was just fine.

i really enjoyed these stories. filled with emotion, culture, rich characters, & interesting plots, i think they got to the heart of a lot of feelings & issues. some stories i felt were missing just a sliver of something i couldn’t put my finger on or something i couldn’t figure out myself - which is no fault to the author. highly recommend this book.

this is a fun almost campy narrative about the beauty industry & standards, the length people will go to feel included & part of the “in” crowd. i really love the insane names of all the treatments. i felt for the main character and how she was exploited during this story and her background & personal life were a good juxtaposition to the story. it’s like goop gone extra evil.

however, the pacing of this story was a bit off and repetitive. it was a lot of the same until the last ~75ish pages where the story really speeds up & comes to a quick close. but a decent & quick read

this book was at times dense and information overload, but i enjoyed it. it was nice to learn about the history of addiction and how its perception and treatment has changed over the years. i also enjoyed how the author peppered his personal story with addiction & recovery throughout - it added a nice touch. i was also really happy at how inclusive and socially aware this book was - it was inclusive of experienced poc have with addiction, how their treatment differs, struggles they face that white counterparts seeking treatment for addiction don’t have to deal with, and how women also have different experiences. very pleasantly surprised by that. overall, a good read.
