The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

I’ve taken a while to review this book because quite frankly I just could not work out what to rate it. I was so thoroughly enthralled by it, feeling an intense love & connection to the characters. The writing immersed me so deeply into Cameron’s world that I felt empty when I inevitably had to depart from it. It’s been on my mind repeatedly ever since I finished reading the last page and therefore have decided that I can’t help but give it 5 stars. Maybe this isn’t justifiable however reading is subjective and my experience & absorption makes it undeniably a favourite of mine. I feel so let down & disappointed by the movie adaptation. They missed an incredible opportunity to portray such an emotive journey.

I was so looking forward to this book however it just didn’t engage me as much as I anticipated. It felt too long for the little amount of plot that occurred. I still enjoyed it, however I didn’t feel gripped until the book was nearly finished.

I may have set myself up for disappointment by having overly high expectations for this book.

I appreciate the concept and how it serves as an allegory for the role of women in society. Sayaka Murata does raise important questions and conversations, which I deeply value in literature.

Still in saying this, books are subjective and personally I didn't enjoy its execution. While the writing style was easy to follow, I found it bland and repetitive.

Regardless, I can understand and appreciate why it resonated with so many people. I connected with the main character, Keiko, on her journey too.

This book is everything & I’m so grateful to have found it. It’s representation of mental health was so raw & I felt so incredibly seen. I picked it up and read it with just a few short breaks in between. The way it portrays queerness is so validating & refreshing. I relate to Gilda on so many levels. The authors writing style is so addicting and easy to follow. It’s simple yet  still filled with beautiful metaphors & thought provoking insights. It explores existential themes & highlights something I commonly find myself thinking about; the ‘insignificance’ of humanity in the vastness of the universe. I loved this book and it’s quite possibly my all time favourite.

This book took a different direction to what I was initially expecting but i’m so glad it did. At times I found it a little bit hard to stay engaged but aside from that I adore this book. I can’t go into detail without spoilers but it’s a beautiful story with sapphic main characters, spirituality & connection.

I borrowed this book from the library & finished it the same day. I read the whole thing with just a break to have a shower. It’s a beautiful story, I couldn’t put it down. I definitely recommend it for someone trying to get out of a book slump.

When initially finishing this book i felt a little disappointed but the more it’s sat with me throughout the day, the more my affection for it has grown.

It’s character driven, so at times it felt tedious & slightly mundane yet I still couldn’t put it down. The imagery is so vivid and atmospheric, I was so immersed in this world that now it feels strange to have left it.

Donna Tartt is such a clever & incredible writer, the characters were so fleshed out it’s hard to believe they are fictional. It’s really interesting now being able to see how the book intertwined with Greek tragedies and mythology.

If you feel comfortable reading slow + character-oriented fiction & love introspective, dark academia books then this is for you.
