I want to start by saying that this book pulled on my heartstrings. I’m a sucker for happy endings, even when Jack freaking annoyed me for at least half of the book. I don’t know what I was expecting when I read the first chapter but, it was definitely not how the story developed. I was hoping for that “love at first sight” romantic crap since she spend one year looking for him and then BOOM! Sarah (with an H) was in love with Laurie’s “McDreamy” and there was nothing they could do about it. Sarah was oblivious to everything her best friend was going through. It was sad for me to see how their friendship suffered because, I’ve been there man. Not over a guy but, feeling like you’re going to lose your best friend fucking sucks monkey balls. When they made up, I almost called my best friend crying to yell at her “I fucking love you, you fucking psycho!”. We’ve been together/apart for what now? Almost 11 years, and I cannot see my life without her. So, you can imagine how happy I was with their reconciliation. I was throwing my hands in the air whoop from the joy my heart felt. Then shit hit the fan and Laurie was sad again for two heartbreaking reasons and I felt like pulling my hair out. This was an emotion roller coaster for me. Meanwhile, Jack was being a stupid jerk, basically screwing half of Scotland and I almost lost it. The happy ending came in the last three pages and I was livid. I needed to know more. I need to tell you that this story is not like a Hallmark Christmas love story. Yes, the saw each other for the first time around Christmas and the happy ending is around Christmas but the story doesn’t revolve around Christmas. Did I made myself clear?
So, when Libby Jones turns 25 years old, she receives the amazing news that her birth parents left her a mansion of a house worth a ton of money. Soon she learns the identity of her birth, the details of the apparent cult that they were involved in, and their suspicious culty suicide. The story is told from different POVs and leaves you with no unanswered questions. It literally had me on the edge of my seat. I was listening to it while I was studying and more than one time I yelled at my Mac for it to tell me what was going to happened. I needed to know what the hell happened to that family. There were people coming in and out of the house and for some reason no one noticed that the neighbors were acting weird. I was so mad at the mom of the protagonists of the story. THAT HIPPIE DUMB BI***!!!! How are you going to literally give up everything, including the well being of your children because you cannot find your purpose in life. YOUR PURPOSE IS THEM. She even let her 14 year old presumptively get impregnated by the cult leader. HELLO JIM JONES, CHARLES MANSON AND KEITH RANIERE!!!! I love true crime and I am very familiar with famous cults and I was still disgusted that this happened. I still have more Lisa Jewell books to read but so far I have loved this one and Then She was Gone. Invisible Girl is waiting for me on my shelf. I strongly recommend it if you love creppy shit and culty stuff!!!!!
I really like this book much more than what I was expecting. This is the story of mother fighting to find her abducted child. It’s a regular day and Rachel is walking in the park with her son Ben. Nothing about that day stands out from their regular routine. That is until she lets Ben run ahead of her. When she keeps walking and there is no sign of Ben, Rachel just thinks that he is hiding from her, playing a prank, like a kid does. She starts calling his name but gets no response. It doesn’t take her long to understand what is happening. As soon as the police gets involved and the media gets a hold of the story, everyone is fast to get to conclusions and point fingers. Rachel gets accused of multiple things. Secrets that she couldn’t even imagine begin to surface and she finds herself lost and doesn’t know what do to to get her son back to her. BUT, she’s resilient, she doesn’t stop, she doesn’t give up and even when the police is not taking her seriously she does everything in her power to find Ben. This story, more than a thriller, is about doing the impossible for the people you love and the lengths mothers are willing to go for their children. It was wonderful listening to the audiobook and now I want to own the physical copy and re-read it. Give the characters “my own voices” and enjoy it better. To my understanding, this book is the first of the Jim Clemo series? He is the detective in charge of Ben’s case. It’s called Odd Child Out. I already have it on my shelf and will be starting it soon. So excited. Give it a try and let me know what you think! ✨
This book just made my year. Something is happening to humanity. We are so focused on surviving that we forgot how to be kind to each other. There’s always people that have it worse than us. This book is a good reminder of all the good things in life. Anxious People left me wanting more and more. There’s an amazingly good closure for every character and I could not ask for more. There’s some things that you read while the developing of the book that maybe makes you wonder “What does that have to do with anything?” or “So, What happened to X or Y thing?”. Well, let me tell you something, Backman is sorcerer with an unknown type of magic in his head. EVERYTHING, EVERY SINGLE DETAIL means something and everything has an explanation. You just gotta be patient and wit because when you less expected you’ll see the answers to your questions, and it’s a beautiful thing. Some times we just need a different perspective and this book was just IT for me. I don’t have anything bad to say about because most of the time I was laughing or my feelings. I LOVED IT and I would definitely re read it. 100%.
This one is going to be short. I really don’t know the words to explain what I think of this book. I do not have a lot of experience with this type of writing. I am currently reading the physical book of Anxious People and I am loving it but still, Beartown is different. It is complex writing, I’ll give you that. It goes back and forth and keeps you intrigued the whole time. I didn’t have a hard time keeping up with the story and the multiple characters. It is beautifully written. It is a complex story and shows you the many aspects of being a human, how everybody feels. I honestly really liked it. If I had more experience with like I said, this type of writing I would probably would be better at explaining myself and would probably rate it higher. It is a book that I would recommend everyone just so they have the experience. I want to read all Backman’s work. Can’t wait to start the sequel.
I am not a pro at this reviewing books thing, but I truly do not understand the hype over this book. I cannot find the right words to explain it. I recently just finished The Vanishing Half and Where the Crawdads Sings just reminded me of that one. Let me just say that I really disliked both of them. What is the point of the book??? There's nothing going on except a little girl that doesn't know how to read and that also doesn't know how to cook grits at least until the middle of the book. It is so boring. The plot lacks a lot. The trial it’s terrible. I am so disappointed because the reason I picked it up was because of the many good reviews. I mean, it's been on the charts for how long now??? And honestly I don't get it. It's incredibly sad in the sense that makes you want to put it down and not pick it up again. Thankfully I picked up the audiobook instead of the physical book because I would've used it to start a fire for Kya instead.
This book was magic. I did not want it to end. It was so beautiful watching her coming out of her shell and gaining confidence and fall in love with Michael. Michael is the perfect man for every woman that watches K-dramas. Lol. He is so sweet and caring and he’s a family man. Love him to pieces but, the story is not about him. Stella is a normal girl with a tiny “disorder” that to be honest, makes her even more special, in the sense that she is so in control of her life, she has no time for foolishness and get the job done. She obsesses with her job enough to make her millions, but that really doesn’t matter to her, she is doing it because she LOVES her job. I am a little jealous of Stella. Hahaha I am not gonna say more because I might just give you guys all the spoilers but YOU NEED TO READ IT PRONTO!!!!!!
I think I can speak for everyone that has read the book already when I say that Midnight Sun could’ve been way shorter. About 400 pages shorter to be exact. Even me, being #TeamEdward for so long, could not handle the whiny bastard. We all knew that Edward was a mysterious guy, always thinking about everything that was going on and analyzing every possible outcome but, this was too much. WAY TOO MUCH. The audiobook is roughly 25 hours long and even if I love Jake Abel and his beautiful voice, I had to at least have the speed of the audio in 1.75 in order to get through the whole thing and actually finish it. WHY OH WHY does he have to OVERTHINK EVERYTHING like a freaking teenager???? Every time Bella sighed or raised her eyebrows, he was already thinking that she was disgusted or that she was going to leave him or blah blah blah. This book was a complete turn off of the image that I had of Edward in the Twilight books. I prefer the Edward that Bella saw. I am not going to deny that I really enjoyed some parts of the book, that it actually made me laugh at some point and, that I enjoyed going down the memory lane or whatever with the other characters, like how much I disliked Jessica and how sweet and overprotective Emmet is but, one thing doesn’t make up for the BIG ELEPHANT in the room. That there was no need to put everything in so much details and that it could’ve been shorter. I am sorry if you don’t think like me and you loved it but, as a long time Twilight fan I have the right to say everything my 14-year-old self would say right now.
I have read, counting this one, three book from Shari Lapena and I have not been disappointed yet. I love her writing style. This one in particular, it was not what I was expecting (and I guess that can be good). There is multiple point of views, literally from every character in the story, but it wasn’t confusing at all and most importantly it doesn’t give you any clues on who is the killer. I had my suspicions, but I was never sure of what was going to happen. See, I have a gift (LOL)… Most of the time I can predict what is going to happen in a movie or in a book, but with An Unwanted Guest (and also The Turn of the Key) I could not figure it put for the life of me. The way everything unraveled at the end, I found that it happened way to fast and I didn’t get any closure from the other characters, only the killer. (Is that the whole point of a mystery??? Because it’s freaking annoying!!!) The last 15 to 10 pages basically tells you what happened and boom, THE END. I wanted more, damn it!!! Anyway, it was very entertaining reading it and I suggest you pick it up if you haven’t yet. It is the perfect book for these chilly nights that we’re having.
Just wow. I was not prepared for that ending. I was not prepared for that book. It was a very long explanation of everything that happened and I feel like it could’ve been told in a shorter manner but I am not disappointed. The way it unravels every detail is very entertaining. I had a hard time figuring out what the heck was going one. I could not, for the life of me, guess what was going to happen, and that kept me reading. This whodunit book is gonna keep you guessing until the very end and if you like suspense and mystery…. This is the one for you. ✨
