i’m kinda shooked by the ending?!?! but definitely a good and enjoyable read… the atmosphete just felt real and lovely and whimsical to me and i love these kinds of stories! and the way the setting often mirrored dina’s internal world

don’t know what to make of certain aspects of the book though… the ending, some parts of dina’s internal monologue (though they added so much value and insight). the ending was unexpected but i guess it further reinforces the point about how dina does what she has to do, although i wish we’d seen some more character development. not that i’m expecting every character to be perfect and reach a position of morality but i don’t feel like i’ve gotten a satisfying conclusion to her, especially when her story stretches across so much time. i admire and respect her, but i also see when she’s heavy handed and cruel. i appreciate the complexities of her character though and overall have grown to enjoy her narration! interesting MC

i should probably reread this in the future to better appreciate it… this book is just so thick with symbolism and literary language and metaphors weaved throughout the whole story i’m still confused and processing ‼️

writing style is quite interesting and the character analysis but goddamn was it long…. can’t compare to WNTTAK for sure and this book could’ve been much shorter. idk but as someone with a sibling the romantic allusions amidst the family dynamics made me so uncomfortable at certain points haha!

first book / account of north korea i’ve read of… heartbreaking and really so eye opening. certain scenes read like something you only imagine taking place in television shows, and the fact that this happens to the north koreans just trying to search for a better life is heartbreaking… at certain points my heart was legit in my mouth bruh

took me a while to get into the book… but once that happened i genuinely got sucked in man. the politics, backstabbing and general chaos and treachery going on kept me so hooked and everything really took off once nemesis found herself sent to (i’ve already forgotten the name of the place. heliosphere?). i thought the development of nemesis’ character and humanity was quite interesting and the portrayal of female friendships felt true to me, although i wish more mention of neveni had been made towards the end….

tbh the writing style bothered me initially because it felt almost dry? but i realise it can also be interpreted as nemesis’ inner monologue and the b&w manner she sees the world, although i don’t think the narrative style develops alongside her character either. the world building was just weird at some points too, with the science elements feeling absurd and plucked out of no where like anti gravity dancing lmao

overall sci fi books are not normally my thing, but the political intrigue and betrayals got me hooked

i loved this :””” swooning at some parts lol this is the first romance book i’ve read in a while (thanks uncarley) & i might just start reading more of them now… the BANTER was delicioussss, the way neither of them ended up compromising or coming to terms w a future they didn’t want for themselves, because of love. it felt realistic, and raw, and simply what happens in the world — the characters are messy and flawed and so painfully human. to me, love isn’t about sacrificing parts of your identity to accommodate somebody else and i’m so glad this book had it as a focus

just certain points of writing had me :O bc it felt cliche… like how Charlie kept leaning forward & certain descriptions of eyes… but ok there rly is a limit to how many ways one can describe physical features LMAO so i won’t be nitpicky
