Book 7 of 2025- Tales of Fosterganj

I loved reading Tales of Fosterganj! Ruskin Bond’s writing is always beautiful, and this book was no different. I have been reading his books since my school days, and his simple yet magical storytelling has always been my favorite. It had been a while (not too long!) since I last read one of his books, so I picked this up last month—and I’m so glad I did!

The book is set in Fosterganj, a small town near Mussoorie, where Ruskin Bond spends some time. Through his eyes, we meet some interesting and unusual people—a printer who is also a thief, a mysterious woman with a tragic past, a struggling writer, and even a leopard that roams the hills. Each chapter is like a short tale, filled with humor, adventure, and a little mystery.

The book made me want to visit Fosterganj in real life! The way Bond describes the place—its quiet charm, the hills, and the simple mountain life—makes it feel so real. Hopefully, I’ll get to explore a place like this soon.

If you love lighthearted, feel-good stories with a touch of adventure, I highly recommend this book!

I bought this book because of all the hype on Instagram, and at first, I really enjoyed it. The writing is simple but honest, and the conversations between the author and her therapist were my favorite part. They felt raw and relatable, almost like reading someone’s personal diary. I found myself connecting with many of her thoughts about self-doubt, depression, and wanting to feel “normal” in a world that often feels overwhelming.

The book moves at a steady pace, and in the first half, I was completely engaged. But after a while, I started to feel like something was missing. The second half didn’t hold my attention as much—it became a bit repetitive, and I was hoping for more depth or a stronger resolution. While the book does a great job of showing what it’s like to live with persistent sadness and self-doubt, I was left wanting more insight or change by the end.

That said, I think this book will mean different things to different people. If you’ve ever struggled with your emotions and felt alone in it, you might find comfort in Baek Sehee’s words. It’s not a book with big revelations or solutions, but it does make you feel seen. For me, though, it didn’t leave a lasting impact.

I already love Fredrik Backman’s writing, and this year, I’m excited to read more of his works. That’s how I found The Answer Is No on Kindle Unlimited, and I finished it in one sitting. This story revolves around Lucas, a man trying to figure out how to set boundaries and navigate the challenges in his life.

One thing I truly love about Backman’s writing is the neighborhood concept. He doesn’t name the characters directly but refers to them by things like “purple dress” or “green shirt,” making the story feel more relatable and universal. Every character’s backstory, like the coma patient’s story, will definitely touch your heart. Backman has this incredible ability to make you care about the smallest details of people’s lives. The way everything comes together at the end was satisfying and heartwarming. It all started with one frying pan, and that simple beginning led to so much more.

Backman’s characterization is, as always, exceptional. Lucas is a wonderfully relatable and multi-dimensional character. He’s flawed yet kind-hearted, and you can’t help but root for him as he navigates the complexities of his life.

I really enjoyed the book and how everything turned out. And after reading it, I definitely want to eat Pad Thai noodles again—if you’ve read the book, you’ll understand why! In my mind, Ove and Lucas would be living on the same street—kind-hearted but, at times, a bit annoying to the people around them.

“சோழச் சூரியன்” தொடரின் மூன்றாவது பாகமாக வரும் செம்பியன் கிழாலடிகள், சிராவின் திறமையான எழுத்து மற்றும் ஆழமான கதை சொல்லும் நடையின் மூலம் ஒரு முக்கியமான வாசிப்பு அனுபவமாக விளங்குகிறது.

முந்தைய பாகத்தில் சோழர்கள் பாண்டிய மன்னன் வீரபாண்டியனை சிறைபிடிக்கும் கதையுடன் முடிவடைகிறது. இந்த பாகம் அதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக, பாண்டிய நாட்டில் அதன்பிறகு நிகழும் உத்தேசங்களையும், அதை வெற்றிகரமாக தாங்கிக் கொள்ளும் வீரபாண்டியனின் மனைவியின் சாமர்த்தியத்தையும் கூறுகிறது.

ஒரு கதை  சிறந்த கதையாக நிற்க வேண்டுமெனில், அந்த விவரித்தல் முக்கியம்.  ஆசிரியருக்கு வரலாற்றின் மீது இருக்கும் ஆர்வத்தை இது அழகாக காட்டுகிறது.

தமிழில் சிறந்த தமிழ் புனைவுகளை தேடுபவர்களுக்கும், ஒரு சுவாரஸ்யமான, உணர்வுப்பூர்வமான அனுபவத்தை விரும்புபவர்களுக்கும் “செம்பியன் கிழாலடிகள்” ஒரு சரியான தேர்வாக இருக்கும்!

இமையத்தின் ‘எங்கதெ’ நாவல் கிராமப்புற வாழ்க்கையின் நுணுக்கங்களையும் மனிதர்களின் மனதிற்குள்ளான சிக்கல்களையும் ஆழமாக சித்தரிக்கும் ஒரு மிக முக்கியமான படைப்பு. இந்த நாவல் மனித உறவுகளின் மெய்யான தன்மையையும், சமூகத்தின் பார்வையில் அவை எவ்வாறு பாதிக்கப்படுகின்றன என்பதையும் ஆராய்கிறது.

காதலுக்கு வயதில்லை என்பதை போல் தான் இதில் ஒரு வித்தியாசமான, விசித்திரமான காதல் கதை. கமலா-விதவைப் பெண்,இரண்டு பெண் பிள்ளைகள். விநாயகம்-திருமணமாகாத,வேலைக்கும் செல்லாத ஒரு ஆண். விநாயகன் கமலாவை நேசிக்கிறார், ஆனால் அவருடைய செயல்கள் மற்றும் கமலாவின் மௌனம், அவனுக்கு தனிப்பட்ட போராட்டமாக மாறுகிறது. சமூகத்தின் எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் மற்றும் நம்பிக்கைகள் அவற்றின் மேல் நிரந்தர தாக்கங்களை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றன.

இமையத்தின் எழுத்து மிகவும் இயல்பாகவும் நெகிழ்ச்சியுடனும் நிறைந்துள்ளது. இவர் கிராமப்புறங்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறையையும், அதிலுள்ள நெகிழ்ச்சியான நிகழ்ச்சிகளையும் மிகுந்த உணர்வுடன் விவரிக்கிறார்.

இந்த புத்தகம் உங்களுக்குள் நிறைய கேள்வி எழுப்பும். ஒரு ஆண்-பெண் உறவு சமூகத்தால் எப்படியெல்லாம் பார்க்கப்படுகிறது, அந்த உறவில் இருக்கும் ஆண் பெண்ணின் தேவை என்ன என்ற பல பரிமாணங்களை இது காட்டுகிறது. சிலருக்கு இந்த கதை பிடிக்காமல் கூட போகலாம். எனக்கு இது பிடிக்கக் காரணம் அந்தந்த கதாபாத்திரங்களின் உண்மையும்,நியாயமும் அப்படியே எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கும் விதம் தான்.

கதை இது. முதல் காதல், பால்யகால காதல்,முதல் முத்தம் என முதலுக்கெல்லாம் அழகு சேர்ப்பது இந்த பால்ய பருவம் தான். இது வெறும் முதல் காதலை பற்றிய கதை இல்லை. முன்னுரையில் எழுதியிருப்பது போல் நம்முடையே வாழும் பெருமளவிலான ஒரு மக்கள் பிரிவினரோடு பிற பிரிவினர்களுக்கு மேலும் அதிகமான மன ஒற்றுமையை நிச்சயம் இந்த கதை உருவாக்கும் என்பது மறுக்க முடியாத உண்மை.

சுகறாவும் மஜீதும் இன்னும் நினைவிலிருந்து அகலவே இல்லை. சொல்லில் அடங்காத ஒரு கனம், ஒரு பாரம்..மனதை வருடியவாறே இருக்கிறது. இது வாழ்க்கையில் பிய்த்தெடுக்கப் பட்ட ஓர் ஏடு..நம் உணர்வுகளையும் இந்த புத்தகம் பிய்த்து தான் எடுக்கிறது.
