Bookstagram made me read this and now I’ve officially joined the Madeline Miller fan club 🙈.

A tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and the human heart, ‘The Song of Achilles’ by Madeline Miller is a brilliant reimagining of Homer’s masterwork, ‘The Iliad’.

🏹 Summary:

TSOA is a story of two “sons of kings” brought together as boys - Patroclus, a shamed exile, and Achilles, a demi-god prophesied to be the greatest warrior of all time.

Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the Gods' wrath.

They are trained together but when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Cruel Fates test them both brutally and demand the most terrible sacrifice…

🏹 Review:

This book is truly a work of art! I’ve been in love with Greek mythology inspired fantasies ever since I read PJO in middle school and I was absolutely mesmerised by this book. It is beautiful, intense and full of love, lust and tragedy.

Reading this book honestly felt like I was reading a classic. The writing is simple yet so deep. There are so many details that you can decipher from very few lines. I don’t think I’ve read anything like it before.

Miller’s prose is stunning and by telling the story through Patroclus’ eyes we get this softer, romantic, poetic side of one of ancient Greece’s toughest heroes and brutal wars. She is totally deserving of all her praise and I can’t wait to read more of her retellings!

🎪 Finally through with ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern, and I’m brimming with thoughts and emotions!!

🎪 I’ll be posting the usual detailed review on this book soon… but I wanted to do something different first by answering a few of the Discussion Questions on this book put out by my book club.

1️⃣ Fav Character:
I loved the dynamic between Celia and Marco but my favourite character has to be Bailey 🤍!! His passion and obsession towards the circus and his enthusiastic outlook on the life within the circus was incredible.

2️⃣ Role of Time:
“The most difficult thing to read is time.” The realistic uncertainty and uncontrollability of time was quite significant. The ageing of some of the characters was one of the main concerns in this book.

3️⃣ The Writing:
The prose of this book is non-linear which mirrors the uncertainty of ‘The Circus of Dreams’ that appears without warning and leaves without notice. Once I was a few chapters in, the magic of the book took hold. The narrative isn’t plot-fuelled or fast-paced, rather it flows like a stream, smoothly and naturally.

4️⃣ The Competition:
The execution of the competition was so unique and I loved seeing how Celia and Marco kept anticipating and reacting to each other’s actions.

5️⃣ The Love Story:
Love is presented as a force powerful enough to overcome any obstacle. Celia and Marco’s love is a rebellion against the isolation imposed by their guardians, allowing them to collaborate and enhance the power of their magic.

 “𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆, 𝑻𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒂”

‘Defy the Night’ by Brigid Kemmerer

꧁꧁ 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 ꧂꧂

💜 Summary:

‘Defy the Night’ is a twisty, edge-of-your-seat YA fantasy which is actually a really cool Robin Hood 🏹 retelling. It follows Tessa, a marked outlaw, and Corrick, the King’s brother, as they work together to help disseminate an antidote to the kingdom’s poor who have been struck by an illness.

💜 Review:

A corrupt kingdom, a star-crossed romance, outlaws, court intrigue and rebellions - ‘Defy the Night’ literally has it all! I loved the fact that the book has dual POVs of both Tessa and Corrick because I love to hear both sides of the story 🤍🤍!

Brigid Kemmerer has blended magic and politics with a deft hand. The political machinations were excellent and the tension between the rebels and the ruling family was so well written! I especially loved the themes of duty, loyalty and love.

There is no harder thing for Tessa and Corrick to face than really looking at their loyalties and where their beliefs are challenged. Both of them were strong and very relatable characters, and I ended up liking the whole cast, including the palace workers who are usually underrepresented in fantasy stories.

If you like YA Fantasy with a medieval feel and princes on the brink of war, struggling to hold their kingdom together, I HIGHLY recommend this book! Can’t wait to read the sequel, ‘Defend the Dawn’!!

🏉 ‘Heartstopper’ by Alice Oseman

(Btw, Alice Oseman is my newest favorite contemporary YA author 🙈, even though this is her first series I’ve read!)

🥁 I got introduced to this series when the Netflix trailer of the TV Adaptation dropped a week ago and I was hooked! I had seen this series a couple of times on people’s shelves, but all that ever crossed my mind was that its name, ‘Heartstopper’, was quite intriguing. I didn’t even know that it was a graphic novel 😂!

🏉 After I watched the trailer, I fetched all the volumes of the series released so far, and I read all 4 volumes in 3.5 hours in one night, in one sitting!! So you can fairly well imagine my obsession 😬.

🥁 These characters are so incredible and relatable. I adore the relationship between Nick and Charlie, which is far beyond any physicality, it’s pure and sweet. Nick struggles with his confusion about his feelings and coming out to his friends and family. Charlie is very supportive while they’re both a bit confused about what their relationship is. It’s innocent and fun to read. I also enjoyed reading about the other characters and their dynamics in this story, though they started appearing more in the third and fourth volumes.

🏉 I love Alice Oseman’s illustrations and writing and can’t wait to read more of her books! For those of you who didn’t know, she writes books featuring LGBTQIA+ MCs and her stories are so refreshing!

🥁 The 2nd Volume was my favourite among the four I’ve read so far. The fifth (and final 😢) installment of ‘Heartstopper’ is supposed to release this year, but I guess the release date hasn’t been announced yet. I just hope that by some unworldly miracle, Alice Oseman decides to continue further with this series because I want to read so much more of Nick and Charlie 🤍🤍!

(P.S. In case you’re wondering why I used drums and rugby ball emojis, read the books to find out 😉)

🍇 “There’s something about lounging in a bath of blood that makes me want to stay until my fingers shrivel enough to show the outlines of my bones.”

🍇 ‘Blood Like Magic’ by Liselle Sambury is a rich, dark urban fantasy debut with high stakes and lots of “Black Girl Magic”!

🍇 Summary:

‘Blood Like Magic’ follows the story of a teen girl named Voya Thomas. The time has finally arrived for Voya’s Calling - the trial that each of her family members must pass when they come of age in order to claim their magical powers. In an unexpected turn of events, Voya is faced with a horrifying task: sacrificing her first love to save her family’s magic. The problem is, she’s never been in love—she’ll has to find the perfect guy before she can kill him.

🍇 Review:

Honestly, I picked ’Blood Like Magic’ up because of its promise of magic and how very intriguing but harrowing Voya’s task sounded (not to forget that gorgeous cover art 😍).

Magic in this novel was fantastic. I loved how the ancestors were incorporated into this tale. Another favourite element of this book for me was the Thomas family. There wasn’t a single member that failed to intrigue me. Seeing their family dynamics was amazing.

Voya was a wonderful central character to follow and the complex relationship that developed between her and her love was splendid.

Liselle Sambury has done a stellar job in creating conflict for the characters. The stakes are so high and the tension very, very real throughout the entire book.

The world-building is subtle, but effective. The setting of futuristic Canada with sprinkles of fantastical and tech-y grunge vibes was so incredible to navigate. I can’t wait for its sequel, ‘Blood Like Fate’ which is releasing in August this year to find out what happens next!

⏳ “The Wheel doesn’t want anything. It can’t. Any more than the river or the rain can want something. It’s people who want.”

⏳ ‘The Wheel of Time : The Eye of the World’ by Robert Jordan

⏳ Honest confession: Amazon Prime Video made me buy this book 🙈. I had no idea this series existed until I saw the trailer of its adaptation on Prime Video. The trailer was so captivating with all those ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ vibes, that I knew I had to read the book. Then I looked it up online and found out that it was a 14 book long series!! And that’s where the story ended for me 😐.

⏳ I do have an aversion for extremely long fantasy series. They consume so much of your time when you could try out so many different authors and lose yourself in so many different worlds, rather than ploughing through only one. I might be having the unpopular opinion here, but that’s me.

⏳ However, I did watch the TV series when it released and even though I know, a book adaptation is only one-tenth as good as the original book in 99% of the cases, I thought the series was truly phenomenal. It undoubtedly reignited my interest in reading the books.

⏳ So I went ahead and got my copy and now I think I’m on the verge of DNFing it. The writing is good but very outlandish. The world building is too complex and quite confusing. Since it’s the first book, it’s just an introduction and we see a few glimpses of everything, yet comprehend nothing. I’m sure things will get clearer as the series progresses, but I don’t think I have the patience for that. There’s so much going on here, that though I can understand the difficulty the author must’ve faced in putting it all together, I still don’t enjoy it as a reader. Honestly, it is HIGHLY inspired from LOTR but not a total rip-off. It breaks my heart to put up a negative review, but it is what it is.

✨ “All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; … From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken: The crownless again shall be king.”

✨ ‘The Lord of the Rings’ by J.R.R. Tolkien is by far my favourite classic fantasy novel ♥️♥️! It’s one of the longest story books I own because this particular edition has all the 3 volumes combined in one paperback! 😱😂 Does anyone else own this 1216 paged edition?

✨ Review:
Do I even need to say anything at all about this book?! The writing is out of this world (which is evident from the quote above), the plot is super-intriguing and the characters downright incredible! Not to forget this is the book that has inspired sooo many fantasy books that are out there today. This book is like the mother of all fantasy fiction.

✨ I started reading this when I was a lot younger and it took me a nearly a year and a half to get through it 😂! But what a journey it was!! There is a lot of writing and I honestly found it a bit slow-paced, but it was so immersive at the same time. Tolkien has written it as if he were literally writing history.

✨ This book explores the popular phrase - power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely! The theme of temptation plays such a critical role in this book and I love the fact that even after being a fantasy, it mirrors human nature so accurately.

✨ I do love reading classics sometimes… well, there’s a reason why they’re called “classic”. However, I hate myself for never having re-read ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Every time I think of it, I’m intimidated by its length and it brings back those old memories of taking days to finish just a handful of chapters. I’ve fortunately become a faster reader now and I hope I’ll get to it someday. If there’s anything I want as a writer, it is to write something as good as this book 😌!

I’ve been a Percy Jackson fan ever since my middle-school years and it was one of those books that got me interested in reading in the very first place.

🔱 This series was an obsession for me and my classmates and it was such a great experience to discuss and share our excitement and thoughts on the books while reading them. We used to exchange books with one another, buddy-read the books together and gift each another PJO merch! Aahh, those days! I don’t think any series in my school was as popular as this one, next to only ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’.

🔱 Most of the people weren’t even book-lovers, but the hype was so contagious that reading it was indispensable for everyone… and that’s what was most incredible about it ♥️!

🔱 I enjoyed the movies as well and hate the fact that they were discontinued. But… I’m super excited for the Disney+ Percy Jackson TV Show which was announced by Rick Riordan a few weeks ago! I’m sure everyone is thrilled too. I hope it lives up to our expectations 🤞.

🦅 “All of us have secrets in our lives. We’re keepers or kept from, players or played. Secrets and cockroaches - that’s what will be left at the end of it all.”

🦅 ‘The Raven Cycle’ Series by the amazing Maggie Stiefvater!

🦅 Reading and love for books changes lives and in George R.R. Martin’s words : “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” I’m dedicating this year’s World Book Day to one of those series that made me fall irrevocably in love with reading - The Raven Cycle.

🦅 For those of you who haven’t read this yet, it is sooo amazing! It’s best that you get into this series without knowing too much. For me the series was all about the amazing characters! These guys are literally Squad Goals 😍. I loved each one of them so much, they’re so precious to me and I honestly wanted to be best friends with them 🙈.

🦅 Maggie Stiefvater has done an amazing job with making you fall in love with this friend group and making you feel like you’re genuinely a part of it! Seeing how much these characters care about each other was so meaningful to me because one of my favourite things in books is strong friendships.

🦅 The writing is also incredible. It’s whimsical and dreamlike and kinda confusing sometimes but in a good and purposeful way. The series is so unique in terms of it’s storyline, characters and the way it’s written. It’s definitely something I could read over and over again!

🩸 “Juliet had it easy; she never had to kill Romeo.”

🩸 Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead was a book and series which I was obsessed with at one point of time!

🩸 This book is a contemporary YA fantasy thriller set in a school for Vampires called St. Vladimir’s Academy. The book has a fresh take on the Vampire world where Vampires are the heroes, the protectors and also the villains.

🩸 There are three kinds of Vampires - the Royal Moroi, the undead Strigoi and the half-human-half-vampire Dhampirs. Moroi are the royals who are Vampires by birth and are of the benevolent kind. Dhampirs are the protectors of the Moroi who safeguard them from the evil blood-thirsty Strigoi.

🩸 But the Strigoi aren’t the only villains in this book. There are some elements of politics involved which was really intriguing. The protagonist of the story is Rosemary Hathaway (aka Rose) who is a Dhampir, protector and best friend of the only living member of one of the highest Royal Houses, Vasilisa Dragomir (aka Lissa). The dynamic between Rose and Lissa was so good! They’re literally Soul Sisters. Rose can hear and feel Lissa’s thoughts and emotions even when she isn’t around (we learn the reason behind it later in the story). I love the forbidden yet irrevocable romance between Rose and Dimitri as well.

🩸 I think Dimitri is my favourite character from the series, btw. Apart from its stunning characters, the plotline of the book was incredible! There’s some amazing high school drama and shocking plot twists. The finalé reveal left me awestruck because I wasn’t expecting *spoiler* to be the bad guy whatsoever!

🩸 Enough ranting. I feel this series is highly underrated and I don’t know why some people hate it 🤷🏻‍♂️. I highly recommend it to all fantasy lovers and especially high-schoolers. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
