Truly a perfect read, my only wish is that it extended past the wedding.

Ultimately for me this was a lesson in "don't read fanfiction for books you really really like already". I love Pride and Prejudice a lot - I have read and reread it countless times - so while this was definitely answering a very interesting question (what if Elizabeth had accepted Darcy's first proposal?) it turns out I'm not as interested in that answer than I thought I would be.

For what it is, it's good. I think it goes on a little too long given we know the endgame, and Darcy is also a little too horny for me (he's only a tiny bit horny, but again, I have read P&P *so many times* it is really hard for me to let go of anything that feels different from the original novel, even a little bit). I don't not recommend it. Whether you are only passingly familiar with P&P and want a different telling of it or you're very familiar with the story and are interested in how it could be reworked, it has some appeal. In the end I prefer the original though.

A very plausible alternative for what might have happened if Lizzy thought about Darcy's proposal for a while and accepted. Very nice, very in character, and the same character development occurs.

Oh, I loved this. Pride and Prejudice has been my favorite novel since I was a teen and it’s incredible every time I read it. This is an excellent divergent from the original story that hits all the right beats and feels honest and true to the characters while indulging in more open communication about feelings.

I honestly loved this.

It was nice to spend so much time at Longbourn and to get to know Lizzy in a new way. This isn't a masterpiece, nor does it have particularly great writing, but it was enjoyable and got better as the book went on.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! Longbourn put me in an Austen mood, so I picked this one up.

First off, I thought the writing style was excellent. Ormiston did a wonderful job of keeping the language style of Regency England that we see in the original novel. It flowed very naturally, and it didn’t flip between that and a more modern style during dialogue and descriptions. It felt like I was reading what could have been in the original novel, which means they did an excellent job!

All of the characters in Unequal Affections stayed true to their Austen roots. There weren’t any moments when I went “They would never do that!” Yes, they made different decisions than in the original, but these were all very believable ones. All of the big plot points that happened after the first proposal in the book were also addressed in this one, with Ormiston’s unique take of course. Elizabeth and Darcy’s development from two of unequal affections into those who could truly love each other fiercely was absorbing and satisfying.

It’s hard for me to pinpoint what exactly about this book I liked so much, but I think it was that is was so very Austen that it felt like she had written it today. Would definitely recommend.

My mother absolutely adores this book and I got it on her recommendation. She's WAY more of an Austenite than me, which might be why she loves it and I was kind of like "well, that was a book."

It's an interesting retell, definitely, with a great deal of thought put into how the two develop against each other (rather than in each other's absence, as in the original). Some of the scenes are really delightful and the author treats the source material lovingly. Possibly I wasn't in the right frame of mind reading it.
