Normally, the first book in a series is a pretty safe place to start. Not so with this series.
There's a companion novella called "Alpha & Omega" that's required to understand anything that's happening at the beginning of this book. I know, because I didn't read it and didn't have a clue what was going on.
I'd also say that reading the first Mercy Thompson novel, "Moon Called," is essential to understanding the dynamics at play in this book. "Cry Wolf" is not interested in explaining the world that the Mercy Thompson series built or explaining the relationship that the novella established.
That said, if you've read a bunch of other stuff before you get here, this is quite an enjoyable book. It's got a solid villain, some cool relationship dynamics between the characters, and an engaging plot. I liked it. I just wish I had read the novella first.

11/17/2021: I never get tired of coming back to these characters when I need their Simple Gifts. While this is probably the weakest one in the series, it's only by virtue of being the first. Charles and Anna are still finding their footing as protagonists but also as individual characters being fleshed out right before our eyes. Watching them grow as people and as a bonded pair is truly a gift to me. It's a slow burn in the best way. Like a building campfire, I love to just sit and watch them grow.
6/19/2020: This is definitely my 5th, even though Goodreads says it's the 4th. I had forgotten that the last time I read this was right after our cat Patches passed away. Today is mine & my partner's 7 year anniversary, and I can happily say that we have come a long way since we lost our fur baby, and have only gotten stronger as a couple - just like Charles and Anna. They continue to be a huge inspiration for me to better communicate I love you when we don't always have the words.
11/3/18: Probably my 4th or 5th time reading this. I'll have to find time to write an entire review, but it is a big comfort read for me. Yesterday we had to say goodbye to our cat, the grouchy old man who was just too sick and miserable to keep going. Little things have been triggering me left and right since watching him fade from this world and being able to fall back on Anna and Charles, like Anna falls back on her wolf knowing she will always catch her has helped. It's still a raw and gaping wound but I'm hopeful that together me and my partner will heal with love.

I predicted the ending about 40 pages before I got to it, but it was still a good read. I loved this and hated it in a way. The character development stops once the plot begins to take over. I wanted more of everyone and that always seems to be my problem with Patricia Briggs' books. She creates such fascinating characters, the little glimpses you get of the minor ones isn't enough. And the major ones are major for a reason -- they're endlessly interesting. They deserve their own TV shows. Anna and Charles were the heart of this story and I was still hungry for more of them by the end of it. They're unconventional and romantic in a good way. I guess that's how you know you have a really great thing going!
I liked this book more than Mercy Thompson, but I don't know it I loved it. The beginning was a bit weird, because the author jumped into the book a few days after the MCs met. It felt a bit odd since you had to kind of piece together what had occurred. I guess she wants you to read the novella instead of include it in this book, which is kind of annoying. I think seeing their first meeting would have made their romance and connection a bit better. I'm usually not a fan of instalove even with the whole wolf mate stuff, but I think it was done better than most. There was the instant connection, but it look some time for them to accept each other, though with a series I would have enjoyed more of a slow burn.
I"m debating if I want to continue the series as I do like the characters, but I didn't think I will like where the storyline is heading.

An interesting off-shoot of the Mercy Thompson series. It wasn't quite as engaging as the Mercy books but still good and entertaining and will be continuing on in the series

This is another book in the Mercy Thompson universe, although without Mercy. This started in the short story in the werewolf smut short story collection _On the Prowl_, and despite that, I rather enjoyed it. The story follows the Omega werewolf Anna, who, after having been lied to and taken advantage of by her former pack has moved to live with the pack in Montana. She is unsure as a werewolf, unsure of Charles, and, oh yeah, there's a 300+ year old witch who gains control of the whole pack. It's a nice complement to the Mercy books, filling in some backstory, and generally light and readable.
