Oh. My God. This book was so incredible. It took a bit for me to get to that oh-my-gosh-i-cannot-put-this-down stage, but I cannot even express in words how beautiful this book was. There were so many important messages and lessons in it, and it was so darn empowering. Like I closed the book and literally felt like I could take on the world. Everyone needs fo read this. Also, it was such an intricately crafted world, and a beautiful told story. Every time I thought I knew something then I wasn’t proven wrong, necessarily, but was just surprised. My gosh, I could talk about this forever, female empowerment, the power of love, friendship, trust, all of it is in here. Also can we just talk about Keita? He is everything and I have so much respect for him. A truly beautiful soul. And, madam Deka. She is such an inspiration, and I really want every Black girl to read this book, because it is such a powerful read.

Perhaps it was just poor timing, but I could not bear another story about domineering, moralizing religious patriarchs who determine the value of young girls based on racial purity or their maternal origin. It may be a fine story with many redeeming qualities, but I couldn’t wait for it to reach that part where the girl rises up to redeem herself and the foolish old men are revealed to be the scaredy pants clutching to power.

THIS. BOOK.
Was freaking incredible.
I was already excited about this because the cover is flipping stunning. It was supposed to be released last year so I was ready for it to rock my life but the release date was delayed.
That was fine by me, I was lucky enough to get an eARC via Netgalley and omfg. I cannot stress how much I loved this book.
Namina is that B*TCH. She did not come to play.

Alright, so we’re in this mythical world where at 16, all girls have to go through this ‘ceremony’ in order to deem them pure. You’re only pure if your blood runs red, if it runs gold, you are an unnatural demon.
Deka, our main character’s, blood runs gold on the day of the ceremony, and here starts the most intriguing and captivating story of survival, magic and female badassery.
I’m in love with Deka, I’m in love with this book! I adore the fact that the romance was not the main part of this story, and how sisterhood reigns.
I just can’t even begin to describe how this book doesn’t shy away from the dark parts, it’s grim in some ways and the magic is phenomenal.
I have a crush on “the mysterious woman” and that’s all I’m going to say about that.

there’s a lot about this book i hated. for one, it felt really juvenile to be considered YA imo. i also felt like the characters were so not enjoyable, like i didn’t care if they got hurt or anything, like i didn’t have a chance to really connect with anyone. the plot was meh and it overall felt rushed. it was hard to finish this one cause i had nothing keeping me going. the love interest was meh, the pacing was so weird and it really dragged on tbh. and everything was resolved too fast and i think that’s my biggest issue. like we would be introduced to something that sounds interesting and the result was either lackluster or resolved too quickly.
i already bought book two.. so i’m tempted to read it and get it out the way. or read something else i enjoy cause ugh

This book honestly had so much potential to be good but it fell flat for me in so many ways.
It started strong. The writing is very easy to take in and the main character showed so much potential. I was immediately intrigued by the world Deka lived in and what it meant to be “impure”. The things she faces early on are horrific and I was excited to follow her journey, to root for her.
But then it just started to fall flat. There were so many strange time jumps and it felt like we lost a lot of relationship and character development. I didn’t feel connected to any of these characters and their love for one another was almost baseless. They’re bonded in trauma and in exile, which I understand, but I would have liked to have actually seem some of these relationships develop more.
I liked the relationship between Deka and Keita well enough, but even this core romance was lacking any real depth or build up.
The plot was intriguing but moved at such a weird pace, and the writing style was just…honestly not the best. Easy to read as I said earlier, but lacking in depth or polish.
I don’t see myself continuing this series in all honesty.

As soon as I got to the boys being paired with the girls, I thought it was stupid. I know it was meant to create conflict. Also, I didn't like the girl she was partnered with, whose name escapes me. I understand that being "pure" was the most important thing in her life at the time, but the author didn't have to keep ramming it down our throats. I also made the assumption early on that she's going to find out that she's more "pure" than normal people, and proud of her difference, etc.
Not going to bother with the rest of the series. The worldbuilding was excellent, though.
