Terry really hit his stride in this one. I can't wait to see how it turns out!!

Better than the Omen Machine thank goodness, although I miss the pacing and writing style of the Sword of Truth series...

You hate the struggles they go through. You hate the enemy. Rage read the book. Once the series is over I may never read another terry goodkind again. Can't take it. I'm not cut out for this.

This one is hard to read as it deals with beloved characters. It is definitely better than the Omen machine and more engaging. I love Richard and Kahlan so very much as well as their family and their friends but it is hard not to enjoy reading more about their activities in adventure and tragedy. but I can honestly say that the tone of this novel or this latest chapter in their lives just doesn't carry the same scope as the original mission that Richard and Kahlan faced in uniting the lands together. It doesn't carry the same weight. it isn't, frankly, as inspiring. but again I loved the world that Terry Goodkind created, I love the characters and their heart, so I decided to sit back and enjoy the fact that I was getting to read more about Richard and Kahlan.
There's a lot of action and there is a lot of movement in the story this time. Much more engaging than the Omen machine. And I find that I am very interested to see where the Severed souls book will pick up and lead us.

3.5 may be more accurate. I'm just not ready to rank it up there with his early works.
I feel the plot and the potential that the "Wizard's First Rule" brought to the series is far more than what the "Omen Machine" and "The Third Kingdom" have brought together. It is moving too slow and not building enough of a story.
One aspect of the plot that I find interesting is the future of prophecy. In my mind, he has validated it as a proper form knowledge far more than he has brought doubt into it. With how much he talks about it, I am going to need a very logical explanation for it.

I kept reading because I care about the characters, and the overall plot was still interesting enough.
I struggled at times through the chapter after chapter of fairly repetitive dialogue and alternating obvious and startling discoveries between two characters.
The good guys were on their game in this one, proactive and doing smart things. The villains picked up some of the bug afflicting their opponents in the Omen Machine and were more mixed.
At times Goodkind had his thriller pacing again, which moved at a better pace in OM, but the middle of this one bogged down a lot.
I still like the characters enough to continue, grudgingly. But everything else I've read this year was better. :(

I don't know how I felt about this books. I felt excited and yes discouraged because reality is I am and always will be a Richard and Kahlan fan. When I first picked up Omen machine I was really excited because reality is Omen Machine was new and interesting and thankfully wasn't telling the same stories over again.
This time, this time is different, I slogged, and slogged and pushed myself through this one. It was hard. It was full of unnecessary in my opinion repetitiveness that made half this book out and out boring and disappointing. I recall thinking that Terry must think that we his faithful readers must be stupid because he felt it necessary to repeat the same idea a million times over.
That's when it happened, it was something amazing, we got Richard back. And it wasn't just any Richard, it was the Richard from Wizard's First Rule. He was back, the Bringer of Death, The Pebble in the Pond, he was back.
If only it hadn't only been Richard, if only we had gotten Kahlan back too. But this Mother Confessor, we really never got to figure out who this was. We certain don't know her. I don't know her, at least not in this book. I hate the Kahlan playing damsel in distress routine. I like her leading armies and ruling kingdoms. This Kahlan doesn't have kings bowing to her. I can cope with long dialogs, plot holes, but not this Kahlan, this is not acceptable in my eyes.
This is kind of a zombie novel and partly Game of Thrones. A mix and inspired. (Wall? Seriously Goodkind? Good thing you didn't start “the winter was not coming”). And of course you cannot forget about the bloodshed, You can see other similarities if you look for them I am sure.
Please, Mr. Goodkind, you are the author, you can give us Kahlan back so please give her back to us. She is supposed to be strong and independent. We all want her back. Or at least we did.
