A King So Cold

Ella Fields

3.57 AVERAGE

I enjoyed it so much I couldn’t put it down

2 - ⭐️⭐️

"I was the queen of the Moon Kingdom, and blood drown the entire continent before I allowed anyone to steal what was rightfully mine."

I think a more fitting title would be A Queen So Irritating rather than A King So Cold because it's clear as day that the King is anything but cold.

I usually consider books an antidote to whatever ails me in real life, this one particularly left me with a throbbing headache and I developed deep hatred for the word "seed".

As for the reason why and what's wrong with Seed, I leave that to your imagination.

Can someone tell me what in the heck was that?

No, no, no... the writing was good and the premise was promising. I've read that this is the first time the author writes a fantasy so I won't be too critical of it.

But I'm sorry I have to say I'm frustrated by the constant state of confusion I was in for almost the entirety of the book.

"For a male with the sun running through his very veins, you truly are a cold-blooded creature."
"Says the cruelest Queen this land has ever seen."

This book is categorized as adult fantasy romance, but I have to add that this one does have a lot of sexy time that you'd question whether or not you are reading an erotica, fortunately I was relieved to see that's not the case.

As for the romance, you'd assume from the premise that it would have a enemies-to-lovers kind of romance and to be honest that what drew me to the book. The romance, if I'd even call it that, was a cluster. There a whole lot of push-and-pull, lust and random sexual encounters. I have nothing against sexy time, I actually enjoy it when physical intimacy becomes an expression of something... this one was just frustrating.

I don't know if it was intentional, but the characters stepped on my every last nerve to the point I was looking forward to finishing the book and parting with them and never looking back.

I don't know maybe awfully cruel characters are not my cup of tea. But I do not think that is the case.

Let me just summarize it in a few words:
The Book Suffered From Inconsistency

Inconsistent plot
Inconsistent characterization
Inconsistent world-building

The fantastical elements in the book were intriguing but it felt like the author thrust them around randomly making the fantasy aspect of the book feel forced rather than flesh them out and give time for the reader to digest all that is going on.

There were a lot of things that I kept on trying to hold on to and process about this world but I couldn't and it frustrated me to no end.

This all could've been avoided if she left her damned amnesiac husband alone in his own little new world.

Unfortunately, I do not think I will read the sequel.

Brilliant fantasy romance

Man oh man! This is one of those books that made me anxious to know how it ended. I'm in awe of how this author made my heart flip back-and-forth throughout this book. Let me just say, all hail the queens! And by queens of course I mean our Queen author for writing this magnificent piece of work, and our queen in the book, Queen Audra.

Part of what made this book so much fun to read was just how terrifyingly awesome Queen Audra was. She was born and bred to be malicious, but even black hearts can be tender. I love how the story brought forth the transformation of the queen's heart, through love. Always through love.

Her King has deceived her in the worst way possible and she battles with self-doubt and the ramifications of what he's done. Her friend and closest ally is truly her saving grace in all this.

Who is worthy of the Queen's love? Is the Queen even worthy of love? I'm telling you, this is a book that made me desperate for multiple HEAs. I was panicking towards the end, wondering just how this brilliant author would end this angsty love story. I can't recommend this book enough if you're looking for something filled with angst, deceit, a strong female character, desperate love, and wrapped in a fantasy theme.

First, be aware that there is a trigger warning at the beginning and that I would probably add many more such as gore. Also, it's a very long and very dark book. I thought it got interesting past more than half of it, but I pushed through because the storyline is good. Unfortunately, I feel like some parts could've been edited more.

Update: tried this book again…well Audra is horrible and greedy, Zad is fing creepy and they deserve each other. Release Raiden to go back to his kingdom so he can find a decent queen.

The book descriptions does not match the story. Needs to state it a cheating love triangle would be nice. The jumping back and forth in timeline is quite annoying. Had to DNF at 30% could not force myself to care. Book started off with Queen bedding a Lord, and was interrupted by one of her servants to go and stop and bring back her amnesia husband(King) from marrying someone else. At this point IMO Queen is horrible person, King seems like he got the shaft and Lord is using the queen for his own needs. I could not read much more, maybe sometime at later date when I run out of better stories to read I might comeback and try again.

Riveting. Intriguing. Exceptional.

Ella Fields wove an exceptional magical world that you can’t help but want to be apart of. Great characters and great character development. Loved this story and was captivated throughout its entirety. Great writing Ella!

Starts slow, picks up in the middle, overall great read

I almost put this book down several times as I started reading it. I’m glad I kept reading. I had a few issues with it, but overall this was an enjoyable read.

I have a hangover from this. I want to read it again already.

It's borderline scary how easily my mind & emotions were manipulated throughout this book, and I loved it.

Authors sometimes have too much power over their readers, & this book is the perfect example of that for Ella Fields. Every word, every turn of the page, every new chapter, illicited a new feeling, or idea. My emotions were manipulated without warning, changed faster than a person could blink several times & made me question my sanity. I thought I was sure of one thing, only to be sure the next second it was completely wrong.

To be honest, this was a slow start for me. It took me over a month with it on my kindle, pushing through the first couple chapters to actually be intriqued. But, once I was, it was game on... I couldn't stop.

The plot starts a year after Queen Audra's husband betrayed her in some way, after which he was memory wiped & exiled. She gets word he is remarrying, goes into psycho mode, & gets together some of her people to crash the wedding with her. All the while, her fuck buddy Zadicus waits naked in her bed, literally just waiting, for her to get back. He's like a little lost puppy plaything.

Audra is not your typical MC Female. Not "likable", she is a raging psycho, a self proclaimed monster, with homicidal tendencies.

She pushes moms holding crying sick baby's to the ground.
“May I please ask for your blessing?” Her lips wobbled as her soiled hand patted the babe’s back. “My daughter, she be sick, coughing like that of an Ergin.”
I glanced at her smudged brown face, my lip curling as my hand twitched and sent her stumbling back over the dirt.
“The cursed do not bless,” I said as her infant wailed.
Whimpering and muttering about the devil, she scrambled away.

She somehow has the ability to act all evil-queen even when her heart gets stomped on. (props)
“So trial me,” I said, desperation growing. “I’ll explain everything.”
She smiled at the book Truin began riffling through. “You seem to have forgotten one important detail, husband.” She might’ve been smiling, but her eyes were again vacant.
“Only monsters reside here.”

Her "unlikability" only made me want to read more. It was a breath of fresh air reading a F lead that didn't feel compelled to change, or have a man chasing to "fix her".
Her husband, the King, fell in love with her despite going into the marriage hating her, never tried to "fix" her wicked ways... though were they really her wicked ways?
It's hard to say how she really feels, she's confused & dutiful, & when duty comes before personal needs, the internal thought process is a lot less revealing than it would be otherwise.

Now, to the emotional manipulation
Spoilers are a hard no for me, so I can't go into much details. However, I've already mentioned how dark & twisty Audra is. She's a borderline socio. So, you can see how I was shocked when her story began elliciting an emotional response from me. SEVERAL TIMES.
No, this isn't a story about changing your evil ways or being rescued & brought into the "light", but Audra has a character arc all the same, & it's one that had me stressed the f*ck out

Overall - 3.75 stars. I'd give 4, but the slow start is stopping me. I fully recommend, & can't wait to see what happens in book 2!

So by the end, I mostly enjoyed this. But it took a good 45% for me to get into it and have some clue as to what is happening. You are thrown into the book basically mid-scene and it takes a WHILE to figure things out. And honestly I was still confused by aspects by the end. It was sexy and angsty, had lots of plotting, a love triangle, and magic; but I don’t feel like the magic was fully explained, and it took a looooong time for me to understand Audra’s motivations. The book pulled some real emotional reactions from me though.
So maybe 3.25-3.5 stars?
