Although I’d like to think I wouldn’t make the same decisions as the main character, this book explores how easily a “respectable” member of society can fall from grace. Raises some interesting moral questions.

Sometimes judging a book by its cover pays off… I really didn’t know much about this book but I LOVED it. The concept of being able to hear something that your family can’t is quite scary and I felt bad for Claire despite not finding her likeable. The writing was vivid and I could feel her frustration at not being believed. She was an interesting character and I liked following her journey as things spiralled out of control. I can understand why she acted like she did but she wasn’t justified in her actions. I found the support group fascinating - I love seeing how different people deal with things and I loved studying each character. It got weirder and crazier than I expected which I loved. It was addictive watching the group - I couldn’t look away from the strange, almost creepy things they did. The ending was shocking and intense. I loved the way the book built up the tension right up until the explosive ending. I am now paranoid that I can hear The Hum…

The Listeners is a book surrounding Clair, a teacher, mother, and wife who has her world shifted when she begins to hear a low-resonating hum. The Hum, as it is dubbed penetrates her every moment and begins to cause shifts in her life and relationships. When her life truly begins to unravel, she discovers that there are more people who hear the hum. What begins as an innocent support group gradually shifts into something far more extreme with major consequences for everyone involved.

I really enjoyed The Listeners. I thought the perspective, and the main characters were all super interesting. I like the constant on-edge, thrilling feeling I got while reading. I was never sure what would happen when I turned the page or what crazy decision Claire was going to go with next.

I do wish there had been a bit more development with the group, as that was one of the most interesting aspects of the story, and I just wanted more from it. I also found the ending a little bit disappointing, BUT all in all, enjoyed it quite a bit and would definitely recommend it to people wanting a little bit of a thrill!

*** SPOILERS ***

I would say that for the enjoyment of the read, I would give this book 4 stars. For execution closer to 3 stars.

This book had a really interesting premise and one that I was keen to explore with the narrator. I enjoyed the pace of the book and slight teasers of something more sinister at play.

What I thought could have been better was mostly wrapped up in the last 50 pages of the book. Although there was a climatic ending to this story, I believe more could have been explored in regards to Howard's past and his pivotal role within the story.

I think that Claire's ending with Paul was a bit of a washout and forced. These characters had started to move on and Claire's identity and values had changed quite a lot throughout the novel.

One thing I did enjoy with the ending was the fact that the author leaves this story wide open again with Claire hearing the hum again. It makes the reader wonder if the others can hear it still and what has been covered up by society as a whole.

The postscript is a refreshing summary of the story from Claire's own perspective. It was the perfect way to end this story and highlights the different themes and issues which are explored throughout this book.

finding out this was written by a man makes everything about this book make a lot more sense. oh brother THIS GUY STINKS!!!!

the writing in this book was so terrible that i truly thought it was satire at times, and oh how i WISH it was satire! this book is baked into a specific setting of 2016 pink pussy hat feminists, though it was published in 2021 and written by a man. it’s more of a 1.5 stars and i’m rounding up because i am kind. the only reason that this redundant, dumb book gets that much is because the idea of the plot could be interesting, and it had me baited enough to keep reading in hopes the story would turn around. but i would not recommend it to anyone. also, the only person on earth who can get away with not using quotation marks is sally rooney. not this guy.
