“Never destined for each other and yet meeting; meeting thought it was never meant to be. High is the bright moon in the sky; within sight but far beyond reach.”

So I finally finished Peach Blossom Debt, and honestly, I didn’t love it as much as I thought I would, but I still liked it. Song Yao was funny at first, and I did enjoy some of the witty moments, but the story didn’t really grab me the way I hoped.
The romance was super slow burn, and while I usually love that, it felt a little too subtle for me. I kept waiting for more connection between the characters, but it just didn’t hit as hard as I wanted. Some parts were confusing, and even though it eventually made sense, I wasn’t fully invested.
There were definitely emotional moments, and the ending was bittersweet, but overall, I just didn’t feel as attached to the characters as I hoped. I still liked the story and can see why people love it, but it didn’t fully work for me. Maybe it’s just one of those reads that’s not for everyone.

Read this right past the start of my work day, so this earns five stars.

Clever, subtle, concise. A single-volume danmei that packs an emotional punch. Not necessarily what it seems on first read. I thought I'd walk out heatbroken; for once, my ship sailed.

Touches on love and what it looks like in action vs. like/want. Also touches a lot on fate and redirecting it.

ETA: Has stuck in my head for half a year. Have ficced it. Was totally confused about the endgame ship the first time around; on re-read, it's so obvious, I'm tripping over it, but the way it's written was so clever, in my opinion, that I dismissed it as banter. Has one of the best indirect confession speeches I've ever read; I cry every time I re-read it.

March 2025 reread: Cried through this a second time. So many details soared over my head the first time through, most notably the jealousy and the first sex scene described as a dream. It's soooo romantic on reread when you realize it's essentially established relationship. I've also read Ruyi Dan now & am happy to say they are living happily on their island.

Sits at the very top of my danmei list and in my all-time favorites of any genre.

To me this was a book of contrasts, I found the start confusing and a struggle to get through. The characters came off flat and the connections between them, which should have driven the book, came across muted. This was possibly due to inconsistent pacing, and the first person nature of the narrative which meant I was less forgiving for the lack of emotion than I would have been in a third person novel.

That being said, I'm glad I kept reading as the second half of the novel moved slower in terms of plot and allowed the feelings of the MC to bleed from the pages. The ending of the book, while convoluted, was poignant and bittersweet in the best of ways.

I can’t believe that this book took more than 350 pages (out of 408) to get to the gist of the story. I was asking myself why I was reading so much about these guys sharing a bed together and then those guys (one of them the same) sharing a bed together. Other occupations were drinking a lot of tea and wine and eat many steamed buns or noodles sometimes even to immortality.

I did like those last ~60 pages. To realise that there was actually a point to all this sleeping in beds and drinking together was fun. Song Yao was a sweet character and I could see why so many people in heaven wanted to help him. That he had abysmal and extraordinary luck at the same time was hilarious and it made me either laugh or snort out loud.

Yet, I think this book would have benefited from better pacing. Yes, I know the author writes online novels and those often are longer than is good for them, but when little happens over hundreds of pages it’s just too much. Anyway, I’m happy the book’s threads finally came together.

Look this is a good book. The writing is witty, the translation is smooth, the characters are fun. Song Yao is the answer for anyone who read SVSSS and wanted to murder Shen Qingqiu the whole time for being an idiot. Similar tone, similar vibes in how they interact with the world--outwardly very elegant and refined, internally ranting about it. This is a perfectly good book. What I'm about to say is not a reflection on the actual quality of the book.

That said, this bored me to fucking tears. I'm not built for romcoms and this is a xianxia romcom. There's like 40 total pages of Serious Content in this bad boy and every single one was like a sip of water to sustain me on this intolerably pleasant journey. This book is perfect starter danmei material for its light tone, firm PG rating, and uncomplicated character dynamics (although good lord, I've been judgemental of Seven Seas making all their books 20 pages longer with their glossary and I take it back, I'm so sorry, I needed a layout of all the immortal titles SO badly, so maybe not FIRST danmei material). This book is so soft it affected my homeostasis and I need to be put in the horror fan version of a hyperbaric chamber. I'm just intensely NOT the target audience of this and I need to go read something fucked up to restore my internal equilibrium.

Book has a love triangle in the story. And the reason it's 4 stars for me and not five is because I was rooting for another person and was so sure that it would be another person, the main character will end up with, that when I'm the end it turned out otherwise I felt cheated. Even though the writing is beautiful the story, writing and plot are beautiful and it's not as a couple that end up together is a bad couple it just I was waiting for another outcome. Still vey much recommend

A light, not overly complicated stand alone novel. This book was a lot of fun and quite different from the other historical danmei I’ve read. First person POV with a very slow burn that had me actually questioning who the couple was
