3.5 AVERAGE

I’m rating this book purely on how it made me feel.

It was such a lovely setting, with a fun mystery thrown in, that it was perfect for a short out of town trip. I liked the slow, emotional growth of Tamara, and her pretty realistic reactions to the people and things happening around her. I wish it hadn’t made Rosaleen such a clear cut villain, and given more insight and depth into the reasons she did what she did. I would have also loved to spend more time with Arthur and the sisters. Overall, very fun story despite the dark themes touched on occasionally throughout.

The ending was satisfying but also made me want more - corny, but I’d love to see this on screen as a limited series or movie.

This book didn't seem to be as it was described. It mentions a diary where the main character is able to read about what happens in her life the next day, then decide it she wants to change anything. The main character ended up being a 16-year old girl, not really my subject of choice, whose father committed suicide due to financial problems. The girl is admittedly mean and spoiled, so she doesn't draw that much sympathy through most of the book. There were several chapters where the diary was dealt with as described, but the storyline evolved into how that diary led her to discover there were family secrets that had been unknown to her. The last 75 pages or so made me feel like I was reading a psychological thriller rather than a "sweet, life-affirming tale" as one critic described it. Had it been more what I expected, I think I might have liked it more.

Couldn't put this book down. Such a fantastic read and I'm definately lending this to my friends. A must-read!

This whole book is so fucked up. It causes you to question why at literally every turn and you mostly never get answers, especially at the end. The characters do so much lying and pretending and sometimes they're completely oblivious to the entire situation. It's just so fucked up, but it forces you to think and I guess that's not an inherently bad thing.

Advice when reading: take breaks between chapters to process the events.

After I read this book I was like...

I don't care about the characters or the storyline. The book could have ended with everyone dying a horrible, senseless death and I still wouldn't have given one flip.

It gets a little slow in the middle and the writing can often be over-expository or too dense. The saving grace is the main character, unlikeable female characters <3. Also love the twist at the end, managed to figure out the meaning of the clues at each reveal which is nice because the ending felt well-planned and not pulled out of a hat, (looking at you Moffat)Would have preferred to have more clues about the twist ending in the middle of the book as well however. Character development and exploration are pretty good. Rosaleen = Annie Wilkes as far as I'm concerned and I loved her for it. Pretty standard low-level read with a few nice surprises.

2.5

This was an unexpectedly great story. From the description I thought it was just going to be an okay book with a nice plot and shallow characters. But they mystery is brought in quickly and bits and pieces are revealed just enough to keep me hooked. I did not want to put this book down. I loved how it turned into a surprising and sad love story. Definitely recommend!!

Spoiler Laurie! I felt so bad for him and what an awesome guy. Even though you just get a glimpse of him, he seems like he really loves Jennifer. And he makes glass scultures! How awesome and adorable.

Despite the rating I liked the book. I just didn't like it as much as I like Ahern's other books. there was a lot of mystery, which I loved. Maybe I expected a different outcome... anyway, I loved that, because it made me want to read on. However, sometimes it still felt like the story dragged on even if the book was fairly short at 320 pages. It's a nice read, but it's not my favorite.

I won this book through the Goodreads giveaway a year ago - somehow I misplaced it, which is why it took me a year to get to it. I'm so glad I finally read it, because I REALLY enjoyed it. I actually would give it somewhere between 4 and 5 stars if I could...

I really like Tamara's character. I found her humorous and refreshingly believable. I liked that she was feisty and I was rooting for her all along. As much as I enjoyed Tamara, I HATED Rosaleen. The simple fact that I felt so strongly about characters tells me that this book was well-written. The characters were really well developed, and the plot kept me interested and eager for more.

This was the first book I've read by Ahern, but I fully intend to read more. I would highly recommend this book - it's a quick read, and very much worth it!
