beach read
emily henry. 4 stars. romance

when I first read this book, I was mostly hung up on my hatred for characters with month & day names, but that turned out to be quite irrelevant in the face of January Andrews and Emily Henry’s work.

however, I understand much of the criticism on how this book sometimes feels a little fake deep, or falls a little flat. I still love it dearly, and I love Gus Everett with everything in me and the understanding that January slowly gets for him, but it’s not my favourite book of emily’s. it was, in fact, one of the few I could not remember clearly even though it was the second I’d read of hers.

it has a hint of the playful banter for which I love Emily’s work, but it lacks the character depth that PWMOV and her other work has. it doesn’t have as much detail to her characters, although the scenery has a lot of detail and inside jokes woven into it, it’s less effective than in PWMOV. so for that, I rate it a little lower.

“when I watch you sleep, I feel overwhelmed that you exist.”

it’s hard to explain exactly what I liked less about this book, because most of the time I’m the kind of person who rates and reviews based on the feeling I am left with after reading the last sentence and closing the book. as much as I wish I was, I’m not the kind of reviewer who keeps tabs on likes and dislikes while reading—unless they’re so present they’re unavoidable.

anyway, I liked beach read a lot but would have to put it below PWMOV for now, based almost entirely on the feeling I was left with after reading it.

Say hello to the book that brough me out of a reading slump!
I've been hearing nothing but great things about this book, and I'm so glad I was able to give it a read for myself and find the first 5 star read of 2022!
Beach Read follows two authors, Augustus Everett and January Andrews as they work on their next big book releases while staying in their beach houses, and, uh-oh; looks like these two might have a bit of a past that didn't go so smoothly, and now have to be neighbors while trying to pull through their own bouts of writers' block and get their next projects finished.

I loved the pacing of this book and all the different scenarios and predicaments our characters find themselves in at every turn of the page.
I could heavily relate to January and her personality as well as some of the personal struggles that are brought up within the storyline, and it made my reading experience that much better. I was smiling, laughing, crying, and blushing in these pages, and it was amazing. I highly recommend giving this lovely book a try! It's easy to read, has a beautiful setting and adorable, loving characters. All around, just an adorable piece of work.

Perfect for summer. January and Gus will always have my heart!
I didn't expect to love this book as much as I did. The characters were funny, sarcastic and the tension between them was THERE, while each dealt with personal matters that kept me invested in the book !

This book is for the hopeless romantic. Beach Read is about two struggling (each in their own way) writers who found each other (again) when they were least expecting it. January and Gus are two relatable characters whose story resonates with people in all parts of life. Each character is recovering from their own traumas and find peace (to some degree) in friendship and companionship with the other. The story illustrates the fragility and vulnerability that forming strong relationships requires.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book (because I AM a romantic). I'm rating five stars because I didn't find much to dislike about this story. Some words and phrases were repeated a few times, but it was not so much that it took me too far out of the story. Oh, I did not like one thing: Does January get ANY good coffee? A barista that "does not drink espresso" should be illegal. What is undeniably certain is that Henry wrote two adorably cute and tender characters that resonate with readers. I recommend this book to readers who love romantic comedy, reading about love, and love falling in love with characters (falling in love).
