Fairy, Texas by Margo Bond Collins

I really enjoy Margo's writing style with the narrators she picks. The book feels as Laney is talking to me as we live through her days. As if she's my friend telling me all she knows. It feels like she pulls me into the story with the characters and I'm their sounding board.

I would suggest this story to older teens as there is the underlining attempt of sex to the story line. Yet there is teen drama, mixed with fairy/demon meddling and ploys.

There are a few different twists to the story that I enjoyed, events and fairy/demon creation. I was kept guessing as to what would happen with these characters. I'm TOTALLY wanting more with Laney and Josh and all the characters. Especially with what we learn of the 'fairy' world, Laney, and more!

Laney's mom has moved her from her home in Atlanta to a ranch in Fairy, Texas. Laney tries to get through the first day at a new school, but things go wrong when she trips over a dead body. And life gets more complicated from there as two handsome boys try to date her. She learns they are after more than she's willing to give as the town has a darker presence than she ever could have expected.

Melissa displays all emotions with enough emphasis that we feel them in the voice of Laney and others. Laney's sarcasm feels so genuine as if slips off the tongue of the narrator. Melissa has to have a strong southern accent to fit a book placed in Texas. She does. Not all characters have the accent and those that do, she shows the influence of the southern swing of their voice. There are breaks in the chapters and Melissa gives a breath of a pause long enough to know that the story is changing in the chapter. When the narrator does small things that relate to the characters or what they are doing, it helps make the story become catching, Melissa does these small things. When the characters have an obstacle in their way of speaking, Melissa makes the character sound as if it's obscured slightly.

Wow. That first sentence is one to draw you in! I had to keep going with that lead in.

We get to meet all the characters and see Fairy, Texas with Laney as she experiences it all for the first time. Boy, do Laney's thoughts come through in the narrator's voice! The town seems strange at first sight. The dreamy eyes she gets from several boys, the strange guidance counselor that has rancid breath, and Oma Raina with the same breath. Just to find the two handsome boys that want to date Laney, the guidance counselor, and another woman talking about her in an abandoned house. Things seem stranger and stranger at first, drawing me in to know what is really going on here in Fairy.

Laney is the dreaded new girl at Fairy High School. She has a new step-sister that doesn't want her around, a new friend that seems to have a crush on her (that she doesn't need being day one of school), and trips over a dead body as she's trying to impress the track coach in gym class. This all starts how Laney's reputation starts to tarnish in school, and just the icing of the cake for what she'll have to endure.

Through it all, Laney seems like my kind of girl. I could be friends with her. She keeps up with the quick quips that others throw at her, always having one to say back to them. Smart girl.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Overall I liked this book quite a bit. The story line was unique and entertaining. You can tell that right away once you see that Fairy, TX is hiding fairies. The characters were personable and felt like real teens dealing with crazy things beyond their control. It was a quick, fun read but I honestly found it lacking in depth. I really like a book where you feel like you understand what makes a character tick and I did not find that in this book. I never really understood what any of the characters were thinking and why they did half the things they did. This book has the seemingly required love triangle but the relationships between the three of them only ever seem superficial and the suddenly, at the end of the book, one boy wins out and they are so in love. It would have been so nice to truly see the relationship grow and turn in to something real. Overall this book really is good just don't read it expecting a book you can sink your teeth in to.

Well, this was a pleasant surprise!

Laney moves to her mom's hometown of Fairy, TX, when she marries her high school sweetheart. When she's not contending with her hateful stepsister or strange goings on in the town, Laney is having to deal with two suitors. But this isn't your typical triangle, and for that, I gratefully thank the author.

The town's mysteries slowly unfold, holding my attention for the entire ride. This was a fun, fast read, and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author!

I really did not like this, but I gave it two stars because I finished it. The characters were flat. The lead girl, just accepted everything anyone told her and was a lapdog. She never freaked out or anything really. And she decided not to tell her Mom to keep her safe. Ummm...what about you? The paranormal world answered no questions, but kept adding more powers and layers without setting any kind of foundation. Where did they come from? What was the basic powers? Did they have an agenda? What was with the different color wings? What was with the bad breath? Why did they think she was "special"? They never said why they thought it was her. Just that it could be. Did they do this stuff to all the other girls in town already? She was the new girl so it was her turn. And the murder at the beginning. No big. Dropped. What? It was really bad. I finished it because I thought maybe at the end they would answer or explain something. Nope. It was set up for a sequel though. Yay.

P.S. Did they even tell us what the main character looked like?

I really love fairies but I hate love triangles. BUT in the is book the love triangle works.

Laney is uprooted from Atlanta GA to Fairy TX when her mom reconnects with and marries her high school flame. They move in with him and his teen daughter on his ranch. Laney does not like the idea at all. She is befriended by several guys, Andrew, Mason, and Josh, instantly, much to the ire of her step sister, Kayla, who really likes Mason. Laney finds out that the town is inhabited by otherworldly creatures, fairies or demons, and both Mason and Josh are part of them. The school counselor and senior English teacher are also fairies. Among other normal high school issues, Laney finds out that Mason and Josh are supposed to date and mate her to bring about an apocalypse that will destroy all humans. None of them find this amusing and they plot to end it. The elder fairies do many things to make sure that Laney is really the prophecy and that she will be mated. Along the way Laney, Mason, and Josh play a game of sorts to make everyone think they are following along, which ruins Laney's reputation in the town. Several fairies and humans are injured or killed during the final altercation. In the end Mason and Josh both end up with the girl they belong with.

I like all the characters. The girls in Andrew's clique are really typical and I didn't trust them at all. Sarah ended up being a genuine person and actually a friend to Laney. The others not so much. Kayla and her friends are the most awful of the humans, but most teen girls are. Josh is the sweetheart of the bunch. He really likes Laney from the beginning and I don't think its just a "new girl" crush like Andrew. Laney herself is a bratty at first but she comes into her own as the fairy breeder scenario plays out. Her mom and step father are really the most clueless parents I have read in a while, but it seems most of the adults in the town are.

Overall this is a 5 star YA read. Even if you are not into fairies but do like paranormal/fantasy romance it is still for you. I couldn't find anything wrong with story or the writing, but there is one typo that irked me for a minute. I look forward to the next installment.

This read really should have been a winning read for me, but somehow it just didn't work. And it's frustrating because I can't figure out what about it just doesn't work -_-

Fairy

I wanted to love this book so much but it just fell short.

Laney moves to a small town Texas when her mom remarries. This brings about a lot of trouble and some not so normal boys.
The whole romance was not well put together and the story seemed pieced together. It could have been great but fell short for me.

3.5 stars. While the story has a lot of the standard YA tropes (h moves to new town, catches the eye of not one but 2 hot guys, is ‘special’ in some supernatural way) it wasn’t annoying because Laney herself is pretty cool, doesn’t allow herself to be fobbed off or distracted by hormones and demands answers to what is going on and how it affects her. Also the potential love triangle never really eventuates into a real triangle because it is obvious who Laney likes (and it is also clear that guy No.2 is chasing her for forms sake and actually is interested in someone else). I really enjoyed how sarcastic Laney was and I liked how she wasn’t the Yatah of the prophecy like everyone thought but instead had those cool suck out the fairy/demon life force powers. Hah serves those evil rapey bastards right. I was NOT happy about poor Sarah being killed. I liked that Laney had a normal friend who knew some of what was going on.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, honestly the summary sounded like it had a little too much high school drama for my taste.
I ended up really enjoying Laney and her love triangle. She is sassy and had a fighting spirit.

I wanted to (still want to) slap her step-sister.

There were a lot of twists and turns, many of them were very predictable. I liked the characters, the Jock, the mysterious hottie with the glowing eyes, the demonic teachers, the circle of friends and of course the bitchy step sister.

Yes, Laney trips over a dead body on the school track while running laps for P.E. but the mystery really gets interesting when her new friend
Sara has her sneak out of the house to spy on a super secret meeting of the 'demons' or Fairies as she later learns.

I don't want to give too much away but she certainly has he work cut out for her trying to figure out who to trust especially when the hormones are running high. (I personally don't think they needed any glamor. I mean come on.)

For anyone who is looking for a fun YA with some heat this is your book.
