Autumn is a recent college graduate, still working as a waitress, trying to make ends meet while caring for her mother who has been diagnosed with cancer and find a decent job. When a potential job offer comes her way, with a salary that makes her all but salivate she is eager to jump at the opportunity. Autumn is put through a series of rigorous tests and challenges along with the other candidates when she finds herself questioning the integrity of the company. Something fishy is afoot but she can't quite put her finger on it. Will Autumn push those worries aside and accept the position or will her moral compass get the best of her?

I'm basically just a Kiersten Modglin fan girl account now - but she leaves me no choice! This book had both Clue and 7.5 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle vibes for me. There were so many layers of suspicion that it was hard to figure out which way was up. I found myself rooting for Autumn who continually questioned things instead of just laying low and keeping quiet. The ending was a heart wrenching, unexpected turn and it tied up the entire read in a really beautiful way. Definitely go grab yourself this book!

Usually like this author but this one fell kinda flat for me. It seemed like 2 difference books mashed together and left me feeling like it was unfinished even though they tried to wrap it up neatly.

I don’t know if it’s 3.5 or 4 stars. The story was clipping along nicely, then it hit a snag for me, and then the ending… I feel I fell for a bait and switch at the end.

This was such an interesting read! I really enjoyed the story line despite how far fetched it was and as always, KMod’s writing was flawless. This story delivered twist after twist and kept me entertained through the whole read. I absolutely love how the ending pulled it all together and closed a chapter. It didn’t leave any questions unanswered for me and that’s always important.

This book was more like a 3.75, but I'm rounding up.

As I’ve said before, Kiersten Modglin is always an auto-buy author for me. Whenever I’m in a slump, I’ll pick up one of her books and read it under 24 hours! Her stories are always so thrilling and intriguing, and they’re super easy to read… so it was no surprise that I flew through this book too.

That being said, I feel like all of her endings feel anti-climactic. Like… I’m not sure what it is about them, but they just always fall flat for me. The build-up is so good, and I can never put the book down because I NEED to know what happens… but the ending is usually disappointing. I don’t even know what direction I was expecting the book to take, but it sure wasn’t this. All that lying and betraying and intense tension/drama between the characters didn’t seem worth it… but maybe that’s just me.

I kind of guessed the plot twist in this one because it was similar to another book I’ve read, but the storyline was definitely original! I think this one might even be my favorite Kiersten Modglin book so far.

Giving this book half a star feels generous. Most of the book is captivating, but the ending completely ruins it. This book was the topic of many, many rants.

This was the most frustrating book I have read / listened to in a long while.
Still want to give it 3 1/2 stars

Autumn Sanders is in desperate need of a job. She has just moved to New York with her mom, who is very sick and she is having to take care of. She is so far in debt that she can't see a time that she wont have bills to pay. She is applying for jobs all over New York but can't get one. Then she goes on an interview for a job but she doesn't know what the job is. During the interview they tell her the job pays $500k a year, who wouldn't want that job. What is the job, she doesn't know but when when she gets called back for a second interview, she agrees without really thinking. The second interview involves staying somewhere away from her mom for a week. This is where the fun really begins, right?

For me this is where I started to get frustrated. Throughout the story Autumn encounters several people who are also trying to get the job that she is. During her stay with them they are forced to ask themselves the question 'Is there anything that you wouldn't do for money?'

The thing that I found the most frustrating about this story is that Autumn is annoyingly naïve. She wont let things go which to me causes her to be extra winey.

Even though I found the main character to be irritating I still had to finish the book. I had to find out what was really going on. With the other applicants for the job, the other people at the house and the job. I wasn't disappointed, in fact I was very surprised and happy that I stuck with it and finished the book.
