Marley & Me

John Grogan

4.02 AVERAGE

I recommended this book to my Grandma who used to have a golden retriever who looked a little like Marley. I loved the entire journey this family went through and I relate to it because I had a dog as a child and will probably have the kind of experience the Grogan family did when we get a family pet when our kids are bigger. The movie doesn't look like it fits the book exactly- but I still want to see it Christmas Day!

Listening to this at work was almost a problem, but I think I passed my leaky eyes off as a spastic twitch.

It is a really good book, made me cry.

Sometimes Grogan puts in too many details and they take away from the dogography (caninography?), but all told this is a delightful book.

I so loved this book. Made me feel good about my own untrained beast.

Found the end sad though, wish he had done the kind thing and put Marley down, before it got too much.

I cried like a baby. I loved the way Grogan described his life before and with Marley. I laughed, I cheered, I felt badly, but loved it. If you read the book, don't see the movie. It vastly pales in comparison.

Quick read and enjoyable, but fairly typical dog memoir type stuff.

I've always been skeptical of this book. Anyone with a dog knows that sometimes it's tough, but mostly, it's wonderful. I never really thought that this book could offer me much. It seemed to sentimental.

And then this morning, it was sitting on the counter at the Bookshop, waiting to be put away. I opened the first page to take a look, accidentally read it. And 3 hours later, I was in tears in the middle of the Bookshop.

This book offers that emotion that comes with owning a dog. It shows this way into life, that non dog owners just don't get. I think that I'm now going to have to buy several copies and pass them along. Not many books move me to tears. And this one did.

This is such a lovely story about a man and his dog. Be sure to have plenty of tissue handy for the end of the story though!

I really enjoyed this book. I can't give it all five stars, though. This may only be because I read how great it was, and that usually makes it just not quite as good for me.

This was a full circle book. The reader connected with the author and Marley right from the beginning. The entire book I knew I would have to deal with Marleys inevitable death, but I still was not prepared. One of my own dogs was at my side as I sobbed the last pages of the book.

Animal lovers - especially dog owners, I feel - have a certain connection with their animals and John Grogan showed it perfectly. Dogs are selfless and love us no matter what.

There were stereotypes in this book I did not particular care for. For example, the pitbull. The author fed somewhat into the stereotype. However, he did offset it slightly by Marley spending time with the pitbull and being friends.

I highly recommend this book to any animal lover. Also, it is a great read for those people that don't quite understand the human-animal connection.
