What an insane life experience. What a strong mother he has. I was shocked all the while through. The ending had me in tears. Though I expected more laughs from his narrative, he still wrote well. I wish him and his family all the best in the future.

At times funny, at times thought-provoking, always interesting. I listened to the audiobook and Trevor’s voice is terrific.

This book is beautiful, painful, funny, and *so* many other things, all wrapped up in an anecdotal package and delivered in a style that only Trevor Noah could craft. His accounts of growing up make the reader feel as if they’re right there with him, running from angry minibus drivers, selling bootleg CDs on the street corner, or hearing the wisdom of his mom’s words.

I really enjoy when authors challenge me to view life through a new lens. By seeing the world through different viewpoints, we gain a greater sense of empathy. Trevor Noah definitely gave me a new viewpoint through his book. By mixing humor, tragedy, and history, he encourages the reader to rethink how they view race and color, and asks us to get out of our Western perspective of the world.

I went into this memoir knowing little and less about South Africa, and wow. It exposed my Eurocentric biases, made me laugh, made me cry. The journey Noah takes you on is a little disjointed and bumpy, but in a calculated way. And his mother, Patricia? Is a FORCE. If I am ever a mother I hope to be half the woman she is, the pillar of strength and goodness for her children (though perhaps without the corporal punishment). 10/10, highly recommend this read.
