For such a short book, it should not have taken more than 100 pages for the story to take off and grab my attention. Once it picked up, however, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Maggie is an editor at an art museum that is having a show for her ex boyfriend's new girlfriend, Kim Lord. Kim's show is all about murdered women, so you can see where this is going. Kim never materializes for the show and is officially missing shortly after. Does she leave clues in her paintings? Maybe. Maggie strikes me as an awkward weirdo from a small town, so since she doesn't really know herself it's hard to get a bead on whether the reader can trust her or not. I had to double check that she had an alibi for when Well it turns out Maggie used to be a reporter so she sets about trying to solve the disappearance. The whole time I was thinking she would be arrested because, being the ex, she had a great motive to make Kim disappear and SHE WAS ACTING LIKE A SUSPICIOUS WEIRDO!
This was a pretty standard mystery. I would say it was devoid of twists. It was an easy quick read though.
Spoiler
Kim died. (Is this a spoiler? I mean it can't be a murder mystery without the murder, but I'm trying not to be an asshole here.)This was a pretty standard mystery. I would say it was devoid of twists. It was an easy quick read though.

I don’t normally read mysteries, but I picked this one because I was looking for an absorbing book to read on a train ride. I love visiting art museums and I was interested in the violence against women angle. I did enjoy reading this, and was invested in the resolution of the mystery. The insider info about how a museum runs added some intrigue for me. It didn’t really deliver on the literary value or deeper social critique I normally look for in books, but I’d still recommend it to a friend looking for something to catch their interest for a few days.

A mystery set in an LA art gallery, one of the best things about the book is the sense of place, the LA we don’t get from Hollywood.
I also liked the story - a familiar murder mystery story arc with some interesting twists. None so shocking that you probably haven’t figured it out by the time it is revealed.
I felt the story lost its way towards the end and could have been more tightly edited throughout. Good pool or aircraft read, or anywhere you don’t want to have to concentrate too hard.

This book was pretty slow for the first 150 pages or so, then when things happened, it still didn't feel like much happened. Not my favorite "thriller." Ending could have been better.

Not a good book. It was trying to make a meaningful statement on violence against women in today's society but it ended up being predictable and melodramatic. Reese's book club quality is really all over the map. It was <300 pages so I didn't spend too much time on it. Skip it!

I had high hopes for this book but I was kind of disappointed by it. The plot seemed really interesting but the execution was not done well. I still liked it but I had hoped that I liked it more than I did.

In this gritty, fast-paced "who done it" the art world is turned upside down and inside out as one of its leading artists disappears on her opening night. This was a quick and interesting read, but please note that there are some pretty graphic descriptions of famous murdered women ( Elizabeth Short, Nicole Brown Simpson, The Black Dahlia etc). I ended up skimming those pages and it did not impact the story.

I'll confess I listened to this on Audiobook and I kept getting distracted. The mystery part was good, but I'm just not into the fancy LA art world. If you are, this book is for you, but the art references all went over my head. All the famously murdered women that the main artist was depicting? No idea on most of them.
The mystery portion however, had a novice sleuth, a spurned ex-lover, lots of female friends, an intriguing private investigator and suspense. Pay attention to names if you want to follow along with the motive though. Lots of interacting characters.
