A reinvention of Peter Pan, set on the Californian coast. Surfers, missing brothers, drugs, and rivals play out through the novel.

I don't even know what to say right now. *contains SPOILERS*

The cover is pretty.

On one hand it's really good and action packed and so unique. I loved some of the Peter Pan switches; like the flying.

The setting was the best bit i think.

However, the drugs ended it for me (as it would for the characters I suppose). I thought it'd just be a little thing and then SHE TOOK SOME (which was just like wait what? It didn't seem consistent to the character) and then it became a BIG THING and then it became ALL OF IT and the ending was just like WHAAAAT IT WAS ALL FAKE? or not? frustrating, and i hated how drugs suddenly explain everything and Wendy was using like all the time. Greeeeaaaat.

I mean seriously.

If I had known, I would not have read this.

recommended for: Um… Probably not Peter Pan lovers because they'll be like WAIT NO.

Wendy Darling's brothers, John and Michael, have disappeared and she is determined to find them. Her brothers were avid surfers, so Wendy begins searching through the best waves. Along the way, she finds a group of surfer guys, who live off the radar. Pete, the head of the surfers, develops a strong connection with Wendy. Will he be able to help her find her brothers? Not far off, lives another guy named Jas. He is the local drug dealer and enemy of Pete. Wendy feels a strong attraction to both boys. Will she get swept up by this new culture and forsake her old life and quest to find her brothers?

I liked this book. I don't really like the original Peter Pan story (I know various readers shoot me in the head). However, I really got into this re-tell. I wasn't a fan of the ending and really hoped that there would be a sequel. However, those lost boy surfers are just fun and awesome to be around.

I'm not a huge Peter Pan fan to begin with but was willing to give this one a try because I am a fan of surfers.

I think the biggest issue (for me) with a retelling is, if it's too close to the original then I already know exactly what happens so why read it? That's how I feel about Second Star unfortunately.

While it IS fast paced and somewhat entertaining, the characters felt too similar to the originals, right down to their names. I wanted to be surprised or wowed and I just wasn't.

Second Star has a lot of descriptive passages -- I can picture this as a movie because of the details and the action/interactions between the characters. The scenes of surfing make me want to head out to the beach even though it's freezing where I am, and there's still snow on the ground. I liked the references to the Peter Pan story and I like that it is modernized and set in the context of surfing.

In a way, it's Point Break meets Peter Pan.

My only issue is with the attempt at an ambiguous conclusion. It isn't satisfying, in a technical sense. Usually I like it when a plot point surprises me; in this case, it felt tacked on, as if Sheinmel didn't know how to end it, and just wanted to please everyone. If this gets made into a movie, I'm sure the director will change the ending.

Okay so I techinically am gonna give this book a 2.5 stars. This book had so much potential I can't even begin to tell you!! It could of been so amazing but instead it was rushed and kinda sloppy. Everything interesting happened within like 10-15 pages, all other pages were just much longer than need be fillers. So this book is a Peter Pan retelling and is about a love triangle basically. But the thing is her relationship with the "bad boy" happened within like 5 sentences, she hated him and then all the sudden they were cuddling and holding hands, all within the same page. There was no build up it was just BAM and it happened, same with the plot twist, there was no build up to it and it was honestly just confusing. I feel like she could've easily added another 100 pages to make it like 348 pages and made this a good book, I just feel like it was too rushed and just not amazing. The only reason i even give it 2.5 stars is because the plot and characters were amazing I really enjoyed them I just wish we got more on the storyline

Overall, I thought this book was phenomenal. A lovely twist on Peter Pan and even more so, the characters are spectacular. If you like a traditional YA Book, with romance, sadness, friendship, something lost and something found with a little hope for a new beginning then this is the book for you.

It was surprisingly sad, and a little disappointing at the end, but still beautiful.
