This book starts w/some truly bad soap-opera dialouge. However, once it gets past that, the story (and the violence) picks up and kept me deeply entertained. For once I did figure out "who done it" when it was kept a mystery until the end but that was mostly a case of thinking, "One of these things is not like the other."

Lesson one - do not go after Eve Dallas's best friend. Ever.
In the third book in the "in Death" series, Mavis is accused of the murder of a model and Eve must prove her innocence, if she is!
The secondary story here was of course Eve and Rourke's wedding, which she seems to actually get into a bit!
Overall this book was just ok for me. The series is formulaic, so I need to be sure not to read them too closely together. Also, I'm listening to them on audio and I think that is affecting my opinion of them.
For example - the voice for Peabody is atrocious. Everyone seems to really like Peabody and I just can't because she sounds like she has a perpetual head cold.

These books just get better and better. I'm glad Eve is opening up to more and more people who adore her instead of trying to play the aloof, robotic cop. I mean, she still does that act MOST of the time, but she's doing a better job of letting the people in her life in. Mavis, Leonardo, Dr. Mira, Peabody -- and BTW, I kinda saw the plot headed in that direction from the start, sadly -- and of course Rourke (she IS marrying the guy, after all).
To put it shortly, I love this series. I don't know why I haven't read it before. I can't stop. As in, I have the next two on loan from the library and will likely make very short work of them and move on to the next five. XD

I do really enjoy returning to this series. I'm only on the third book, but the characters feel so familiar, it's comforting to spend time with them again. It seems strange to call a series that features grisly murders comforting, but it's really the characters that have drawn me in.
This time, Eve has to deal with the fact that her best friend Mavis has been accused of murder. She's also dealing with the recovery of traumatic memories from her past, and planning a wedding. We learn a little more about some of the other characters too, which makes this a more emotionally complex story.
I think the whodunnit aspect of this book was a little harder to guess this time, though I had my suspicions when a certain character appeared. As I've said before, though. the strongest aspect of this series is the characters and their relationships. I suspect that will always be the case with these books, and I'm fine with that. It is fascinating to see Eve at work. We now have the addition of Peabody to make things more interesting. Eve in the role of mentor will be great to read going forward, I think. She's also just such a clever cop, and so good at her job.
I do feel like it's pretty early in Eve and Roarke's relationship to be getting married, especially considering Eve had been so closed off emotionally when she met him. I think the fast track to marriage might be due to the possibility that this series was originally supposed to be just these three books, but it got extended because it was obviously popular. I don't know if it was actually only supposed to be a trilogy, but the way the story ends here, it does seem like a natural end point. I'm not mad at all that it continues into an over 50-book series: I just think the relationship between Eve and Roarke would certainly have been more drawn out if this was envisioned as a longer series at the outset.
Anyway, I will be continuing the series, definitely. I've been listening to the audios, and I'll continue doing that, but I think I will start picking up the ebooks of the series, or at least the ones I like best, so that I can revisit the stories and these characters in the future. I'm going to start listening to the audios on a more regular basis too, since I have still over 50 books to go to even be caught up on the series!

This series is perfect to fill between heavier reads. I love listening to them as audiobooks because they keep my attention. Eve Dallas finds a case super close to home when her BFF is accused of murder and all the while trying to plan her wedding. Another great installment you won’t want to miss.

I think these would be better suited if I read them further apart but I also don't know if I'm interested in continuing them any longer because I know they'll be super formulaic and I don't really like Eve & Roarke's relationship.
Spice level: 4.5
Trigger warning for sexual assault, incest (outside of murder and violence that is typical in this series)

This was a good audio book. I sometimes have to stop because of the narrator, but this narrator did a great job.

My favorite of the series so far. So many wonderful character interactions! The love the supporting cast so much, and it was awesome to get to see more of them this time around, on top of all the perfect moments between Eve and Roarke. I had the villain figured out pretty much from the offset (I'm not sure if the author has actually made these books that predictable, or if reading so many mysteries has just made me naturally suspicious of a certain sort of character), but that didn't in any way stop me from enjoying the story. Quite honestly, this one was really hard to put down! :D

April 2015 // I have really been enjoying this series. Eve is an interesting character to read about. This one was all about an illegal drug and finding out who was the murderer before her friend went down for a crime Eve knew she didn't commit.
