Heirs of Power was a pretty interesting book. It hooks you right from the beginning and drags you through the entire adventure.

First, the book started off great for me but then it did get a little slow right after. Maybe it's just because we were just getting to know Kitty Fairlow, who is the MC, and her whole life story before her adventure begins.. but yeah, I have no idea!

Well about Kitty, hmmm.. well she has a fiance name Luke and they are planning their wedding. Well, at least they were until Kitty had to go run an errand.. that turned into an adventure for her father. From this little errand to the princess, Kitty finds out that she isn't some normal girl who is about to get married. No, she actually belongs to a special and very secretive group of people - oh, and she basically needs to prepare for this epic battle that's about to go down.

Now I loved the writing - love it! I just wish this book didn't have boring parts in it.. but sadly not every book is perfect. I did really enjoy getting to know the characters in this book. My favorite was probably Asher because he could sometimes make me swoon. I honestly loved Kitty's friendship with him because they are both really caring and loyal people. Also super jealous that Kitty is a skilled hunter.. I could probably catch myself in a trap that I set.. because I lack a shit ton of hunting skills. She also kind of reminds me of Katniss - which hey, I didn't mind at all.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I seriously can't wait for the second book to come out.. and if it is already out.. well then I can't wait to dive into that book! BRING IT ON!

I read my first book by this author last year and really enjoyed it, while waiting for the next book in that series I decided to pick up this book. I wasn't quite sure what to expect of it and I was afraid I might not enjoy it as much as her other series. I shouldn't have worried as I fell in love with this story. It grabbed my attention form the first chapter and stayed a riveting read all throughout the book. I was sad when I finished it and I can't wait to dive into book 2 as I have to know what happens next to all these characters and their world!

I really enjoyed this book. It starts off strong when Kitty and her father stumble upon a strange ritual, Kitty has no idea what's going on. Her father tells her to go speak to the princess who will reveal more. And that's how Kitty's journey starts. Kitty doesn't know who she is until the princess reveals everything. Kitty is part of a group called the Constellations who have special powers due to a spirit who shares their body and they can stop an evil race from taking over and killing their world. First they have to find the rest of the constellations and so their journey starts to find the other constellations as well as stop any minions of the evil race they come across.

This book is filled with action, cool battle scenes as well as great characters. The set-up might sound typical with an evil guy and chosen ones as you see in a lot of fantasy books, but the way the author used those tropes in this book was unique and gave the book a fresh feel. I really enjoyed following Kitty and her friends along and as their journey continues they add more characters to their group. It was awesome to learn more about their powers and see who they would meet next. There are some really unique and cool powers and it was so awesome to see what everyone could do. And there's so much danger along the way. The evil guys follow them at every step and they land in danger and difficult situations along the way.

There are great twists and reveals. Times where the story went in a different direction than expected and some nice twists and interesting ways things developed. I kept wanting to read more as it was such an engaging read.

Kitty was a great main character, while she didn't know what she was she quickly adapts to her new role. And it was great to see her dedication to saving her world. She also had some cool powers being The Archer. It was great seeing her grow into her powers and fit into the group. Her friendship with the other constellations was awesome too, her relationship with each of them is different. There is a bit of romance and I have a guess how that will develop, but we'll see in future books.

The group of characters in this book is awesome. I quickly grew to like most of them. There are a few characters we haven't seen as much about and it took me a while to warm up to Serena. although I did think her actions made sense and were realistic for her character she just wasn't as likable sometimes. I especially liked Asher, he's such a complex and interesting character. One of those characters who has an easy smile and seem easy going, but he's one of the most dedicated constellations and I grew even more impressed and curious about him the more I learned. I like how he becomes friends with Kitty.

I am also very curious about the Mystic, we don't know as much about him yet, but I really liked what we see so far. Then there's Ellie and I like what she brings to the group. And The Swordsmen was great too, I liked the twist with that character. I liked seeing the groups grow together and how they each find their place and role. I am also impressed with how each character was different and had their own unique personality. I never was confused who was who and as they slowly add more characters to the group it gives the reader enough time to get to know each of them.

Just like in this author's other series the action scenes were well written. You really feel like you're in the middle of the action and I could visualize well how everything was playing out. I liked how there was a good mix of action scenes, their journey forward as well as character development. There is so much that happens in this book, but the pace was perfect for this book and it kept me engaged all the way through.

I liked the world building. we get a feel for the world building, but most of it focuses on the powers the constellations have, some background about their world and the evil race. Slowly throughout the book we learn more, but at the start there's a bunch of information at first which helps to get started and get a good grasp on the world. There are some great developments and new information you lean along the way.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this book. It was such a great read with plenty of action, a perilous journey and awesome characters. I really liked following Kitty along as she sets off on this journey and learns more about herself and her powers. I loved all the different characters in this book and how they all come alive and have their own personality. Asher is one of my favorite characters so far, he's such a complex and interesting character. I also like seeing how all the characters interact and the friendships they form. They really grow into a tight and efficient group. There is plenty of action in this book and I like how the author writes the action scenes, they're easy to visualize and engaging to read. I liked the world building and how we get a feel for the world. The author puts an unique spin on common fantasy themes and it worked out well. I enjoyed learning about all the different powers the constellations had. The threat to their world was real and scary and added some danger to their journey. I liked Kitty and her dedication to saving this world. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to dive into book 2!

Heirs of Power is exciting and vivid! It is packed with fast paced action, magic, and danger! For those who love a good ya story full of adventure and inherent power, this one is for you!

I found this one to be very unique and adventurous! I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of the constellations being passed their abilities from their parents because of ancient spirits inhabiting their bodies. It was a new magic system that worked really well with the vivid world that MacLeod built. The writing was vivacious, and the characters were very dynamic.

I was quite fond of the fact that each constellation character was different. They weren't all bad-ass teenagers that quickly adjusted to their fates and the dangers thrown in their faces. Each one handled things differently. Each one had their own personality and their own magic about them. With very different backgrounds, MacLeod was able to create a wide range of young adults that each stood out, making their gifts very easy to remember while reading.

Though the beginning had me mildly confused with the intense pace, I quickly fell in with the flow and had a fun time at it. There was never a dull moment. The plot had fire and gripped me the entire time. I really loved that the diversity of the characters' backgrounds allowed for several conflicts to arise in the story so that the book stood out from other ya fantasies where all the characters always over power the enemies and never seem to face hardships. The characters were varied enough that they didn't always see eye to eye, which gave the story a little realism and was refreshing.

I'd definitely recommend this one to ya fantasy lovers. It was dramatic and unique and had a refreshing complexity to it. I finished it in once sitting and was already craving book 2 by the end.

I was teetering on the edge between three and four stars for this book, but by the end I think I felt a little more positively.

The beginning of this was a struggle for me. It was so exposition heavy and there was tons of dialogue just explaining the whole situation and all the magic. I couldn't connect with the story or the characters at all, and I was really worried about getting through the rest of the series. I get that, especially in high fantasy, you need to introduce entire worlds in addition to the story itself, but I think there's a better way to do it. And not connecting with the story also meant I spent a great deal of time being annoyed by nitpicky things because I wasn't enjoying it overall.

But around the halfway mark, it eased up. All of the basics had pretty much been explained, so it was a lot easier for me to get into the flow. It was fascinating. I really loved the dynamics between the characters. Kitty and Asher especially were a great duo. I adore them together, as a team against the world almost. And Asher's backstory is just superb. I keep hoping he doesn't die because he's my favorite and he would one hundred percent sacrifice himself at the slightest need.

And I really like how it offers so many perspectives. There are a lot of disagreements and personality clashes, but no one is really villainized by the narrative. They're just different and they're allowed to be different. It's really well done.

I think I did struggle with the dialogue throughout. It never really sounded like real people talking to me. It was always a little bit stilted. It got loads better in the second half, but I still found myself noticing it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. I'd say if you're going to give this a go, commit to getting through the first half even if you're not enjoying it. It got infinitely better. I'm definitely continuing on with the series and would definitely recommend giving this a go.

What a surprise is in store!

Imagine finding out you have inherited powers that can help save your world. This happens to the Archer and others in an epic fight to save their world from invaders. It's a fight of good verses evil. With no idea who will win.

A world I could get lost in, characters who brought that world to life, and an enemy that cannot be ignored.

F'ing INCREDIBLE! And I totally gift Asher the whole of my heart ❤️

I honestly had no expectations going into this. I was just in the mood for a fantasy escape, and this one caught my eye. Didn't even read the blurb before d/ling it.

So glad that's the way I played it! Because seriously, when this book blew me away, the impact was all the more satisfying for being entirely unanticipated.

The world is fascinating. There's a shit-tonne of action here. It's a wild adventure crammed with twists and turns. But above all else, this is a character-driven story with real depth and emotion and humour.

Kitty is an awesome protagonist. And she did a fantastic job of pulling me into her head and making me care.
Blindsided by the revelation of her inherited gifts and thrust into a mission for the world she was unprepared for, this girl doesn't waste precious time agonising over the tough hand she's been dealt or allowing her self-doubt to cripple her. The Archer steps up and deals, keen and determined.
Caught in the midst of in-group conflict, this girl doesn't cave to peer pressure or taking sides. And caught out by the enemy she's only just learned of, she strikes hard and fierce without hesitation.

Kitty's fellow Constellations are such a thoroughly mixed bag of personalities that even the simple task of them setting up camp together could explode into something as dramatic as the fight scenes.
The bickering and banter is stupendously entertaining. Each group member has unique characteristics and motivations, all fully believable based on their backgrounds, and their interactions carry a very natural and fluid feel. (Also, passionate love of tea = relatable!)

Even though I came to expect an incident of mortal peril with every turn of the page, the attacks still managed to always catch me unawares. Cleverly written and fast-paced, there's not a dull moment, nor is there a predictable one.

Heirs of Power is not a romance. But it's not without the tease of some.
Our Archer and the Juggler have some scorching white-hot sparkiness going on between them, and. It. Is. Glorious!

The Juggler is an anti-social snarkmaster called Asher, and he is -without a shadow of a doubt -one of the most amazing fictional characters I've ever fallen for. Asher is just so wonderfully sharp-witted and damaged and adorable. Totally kick-ass too. And the way he slowly begins opening himself up to Kitty made my chest ache!

Heirs of Power is a book I'd recommend to everyone (and all their friends).

This was such a unique fantasy book, after reading many fantasy books that follow such similar tropes and story lines, this one was very inventive and creative. The land and creatures that filled it felt so real and I found once I finished it I didn't want to leave. There was enough action to keep me reading along with dynamic action and battle scenes. The characters were one of the best parts of the book for me however, the character banter was on a similar level to that of Six of Crows (which if you know me is very high praise). My favourite character by far was Asher (the Juggler). His friendship with the dependable and lovable Kitty was another high point to the book and I loved how their interactions never felt forced, but progressed naturally. I actually cannot wait until the sequel is released!

2.75-3 stars.

To be fair that's my fault, there wasn't any indication that there might be gay characters in this book so I probably should have passed. Reading a book is extremely arduous if you haven't connected to at least one of the characters. Without that connection it's nearly impossible for me to get invested in the world and story. And I won't lie, I started to skim about halfway through so I didn't experience the book in its entirety.

The name choices in the book really hampered my reading experience as well. The main character, Kitty, also goes by The Archer and is refered to as that many many times throughout the book. Another character was Asher. Then you have the race of Lucidians and then also a character named Lucian. My brain got hung up every time any of these names appeared and I had to reread to make sure I had the right one. It disrupted the flow literally every other paragraph. This of course probably isn't a problem for most people- my brain be a bitch sometimes- but it was a very frustrating experience for me personally.
