Angie Thomas never heard of a sophomore slump. I could’ve finished this book in a day but I tried instead to savor it, sit with it. When this book ends and you’ll miss not only the characters but how Angie Thomas wrote an entire world of trauma, love, dreams deferred, joy, resilience, and hope into one through line.
I loved everything about this book. The characters (Brianna is such a strong protagonist), the important topics that are brought up and tackled, and of course the overall plot.
Hip-Hop is something I only started paying attention to a bit later in life, but there are so many artists and songs that have cemented this genre for me. As a lover of words and stories, I'm such a big fan of artists like J. Cole who have so much to say and say it well. This novel, like a great rap song, has a lot to say and does an awesome job of putting it all out there.

WOWOWOW I loved this book. There were elements of perseverance, anger, romance, suspense and so much more all piled into one beautiful story about never giving up when times are toughest.
Angie Thomas is an amazing writer and I love her work.
This book is about Bri, struggling while her mom faces unemployment causing her and her brother to face lack of food in the fridge. Bri’s father died from a gang member shooting him; he used to be a legendary rapper. Bri’s dream is to make it big in rapping, like her dad, because as her mom isn’t making a sufficient amount of income, Bri feels it’s her responsibility to make it big and supply her family with food in the fridge. She believes her chance at fame is the answer. But then she writes a song about how people treat people like her, that seems to cause more trouble than fame. But does it actually? Bri made some questionable decisions at times. Sometimes she spoke her mind a little too much. But I loved her persistence, her love for her family, her passion for rapping, and making a change. She didn’t give up; she had dreams to achieve. There was also a little romance in the book which, for me, always adds some excitement!
This book brought a few tears and it helped me feel, sympathize, with some of the characters.
I 10000% recommend you read it because it is AMAZING!!!
This work highlights complex identities and experiences Bri has as a young black female rapper. She is trying to support her family, deal with her grief over the loss of her father, and learn about who she wants to be and how she wants to represent herself in the world. I listened to this work as an audiobook and it was a powerful experience. I highly recommend this work.
“You recognize when you say brilliant that you’re also saying Bri”
“On the come up” by Angie Thomas is the author’s second book that takes place in the same city as the bestselling “The Hate U Give”.
“On the come up” follows strong Bri, a 16 year old that wants to become a rapper and when she gets the chance to rap at The Ring her dream is so close that she almost can touch it.
This book takes up the fault in all the stereotypes that exists when it comes to black and brown people, how they’re treated differently because of the color of their skin. It also takes up important topics like drug addiction, alcoholism, depression and other mental illnesses.
Bri is a hotheaded girl who says what she thinks, and I love her for it. She knows what her dream is and is at the beginning ready to do whatever to reach it. But she grows so much during the much and I really liked getting to know the real Bri more and more as I flipped page after page.
Thomas is a really good author who has a way with words that makes it hard for the reader to put the book down.
I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book, they all had their own strong personalities which made it easy to tell them apart. My favorites were without any doubt Bri, Trey, Sonny & Curtis! Ah Curtis.
⭐️ “On the come up” by Angie Thomas gets 3.5/5 stars from me!

Angie Thomas has done it again! Thomas uses the same themes: racism, poverty, police brutality, drugs etc to address the issues within the black community. A young girl named Bri finding her voice in a place that wants to silence her based on the color of her skin. The message that the readers should take away from the book is don't let anybody silence you because of your race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Our voices have the power to make a difference in our communities.
Wow. Not everyone follows up a 5-star debut with a second 5-star offering, but Angie Thomas has definitely done it here. This novel is phenomenal. You should read it.
