No relationship development (spoilers)

The premise was interesting but there was no actual development with the relationship between the characters. They had sex. They avoided each other for 5 years at work. Gideon became a little touchy feely. They had sex. Oh… I guess “we’re a couple now”. There was no discussion or depth. It was like the author forgot they had to SHOW not TELL that there was a relationship developing. The relationship between Alistair and Sam was more developed than between Sam and Gideon.

Conversely, the internal monologue about random things kinda dragged on and on. There were several parts of the book that could have been cut to help the story flow more smoothly. The idea behind the story was great. The execution, not so great.

Ahhhh I wish this was the type of series that followed one MC throughout. That's what I had thought originally, so I was disappointed to find out that the next book features a new MC since I liked Sam so much. Nevertheless, this book is such fun! I loved the camaraderie between the characters, and I love how competent Sam is at his job.

I docked a star cause the ending feels a bit rushed to me, and I so had wanted to stay with Sam a few more books longer. :( There were a few pacing issues as well, although those did not lessen my enjoyment of the characters. I'll check out the next book.

What do you call it when:

The MC's fuck in chapter 1, to find out the next day, the hot mysterious mean looking MC works at the company you just got employed at...
THEN IT WONDERFULLY AND GRACEFULLY TIME SKIP US 5 YEARS...
Then have absolutely NO sexual tension or pining or even eye contact during that time...
And then the author TELLS you about the last 5 years and all the friendships you've formed... And SHOWS us nothing...
Then the romantic interest is finally involved again, and the story goes into slow burn mode...
But like... it's SO SLOW BURN, that you can safely assume the gas isn't even connected to the house, let alone the stove you want the relationship to cook on???

THE WASTED POTENTIAL OF WHAT THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE BEEN IS CRIMINAL.

4 fucking time skips

This was my first book by Louisa Masters. I will certainly be reading/listening to more of her books.

The supernatural world was nicely constructed, and Sam's character was interesting to get to know. The one reason I tend to avoid reading first person storytelling is that I like to see the perspectives of more than just the main character. I really wanted to know Gideon a bit better. This book is part of a series so hopefully, I will get the chance eventually.

The plot lays down the groundwork for a very interesting social dilemma. I am interested in how this story evolves throughout the series.

The narration was nicely performed, and the character voices were distinct.

I knew I'd love this when the author compared hellhounds to golden retrievers. (And in this world, they are very similar.)

Honestly, no idea why I decided to read this book, because I've never been much of a shifter/paranormal fan. ::looks at books-read lists:: OK, that may be changing, but still, they aren't my first choice when I'm looking through my TBR. But something about this one grabbed me.

Loved: the banter, the characters, the romance, the world-building.

Personal quibbles: like a lot of first-in-series, there's a lot of exposition to set up everything. It was enough to pull me away from the plot. Also, the mystery behind everything was a bit confusing for me at points.

I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

My new author crush! Loved this book so much mostly because this author is hilarious! I might have signed on for romance...which I got, but the laughing out loud was a huge bonus at almost every page. Def a keeper!
