4.29 AVERAGE

A really rich read, but it would have been great to learn about M vs F sleep needs, menstruation sleep needs, etc. Everything was "8 hours for all". The narcolepsy chapter was disappointing as a sufferer - things were very skimmed over and only one type was presented.
I loved the important note on low socioeconomic students × less sleep because of VERY early bus schedules. Please please start schools later to make everyone more safe and healthy! And so that we can learn more!

Supposedly has misinformation, but for what it is, it's really good.

DID NOT FINISH: 16%

Couldn’t finish this book. I’m sure it has a lot of interesting information but every time I listen to this audiobook I feel like falling asleep 😂. Pretty slow read for my taste.

Hay que dormir mucho porque si no pasan cosas chungas. El dormir no es de cobardes.

Incredibly Important and Well Researched

I am often skeptical of health related books, especially those claiming to have some kind of magic bullet that cures all. However this book has not disappointed. Matthew Walker is a true scholar of sleep science. Nearly every claim he makes he backs up by describing the study that was done to support it in plain easy to understand language. As someone who doesn’t always get enough sleep and someone who sometimes feels guilty or lazy for sleeping too much, I can honestly say that this book disavowed me of any notion that sleep is not extremely valuable. Habits are hard to change but I will be placing my quality and quantity of sleep much higher on my priority list after reading this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who routinely gets less than 7-9 hours of sleep each night or anyone who wants to understand why sleep is so important to every aspect of our lives.

The most insightful book I have read all year. As someone who suffers from chronic insomnia, the information provided in this book highlighted why sleep is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. I was skeptical about listening to the audiobook, but as the chapters progressed, I was hooked and even purchased a hard copy. It is unsurprising that this book had a four-month waiting list on Libby! With my knowledge about the importance of sleep now, I will constantly look back and reread this book. Matthew Walker explains why sleep is vital to your life, and I encourage others to read this book because it'll be just as insightful to your life as it is to mine.

4.5 stars. Terrifying and life changing.

If Matthew Walker’s purpose was to instigate fear with this book, well done! You did it!

The book takes us on a journey to understand the process of sleep, what causes us to sleep, and the benefits of sleep as well as the consequences of its deprivation which seem
to be detrimental to our well being.

Despite Why We Sleep being written to set forth scientific evidence that supports the importance of sleep, Walker has been able to give us a “light” book with deep information that is easy to read.
