Read this in school many years ago. I remember the general premise of the novel and the fact that it was very good. As I was reading The Book of Negroes today, I had a vague memory of this book and had to go look it up. It's definitely a book to remember...

I actually read this book one night while helping my daughter with some homework that was about this book. (Grade 7)

I mostly read it so that I could have a better understanding of the questions and work she was doing.

I enjoyed the book and thought that it was very well written for that age group. It gave her a very real understanding of what slaves went through during that time period and of how the underground railroad worked.

She enjoyed it very much.

My 5th grader is reading this book for school so I decided to read it as well so that I can discuss it with him. I’ve read some criticism about this book- the critics claim that Smucker does not portray the lives of slaves to be as harsh as they really were. However, this book was written for children, and I think in that context it is a great read. As an adult I really enjoyed it as well, but reading it made me want to read some true accounts of the lives of slaves during this time period in the United States. Next I would like to read “The Narratives of Fugitive Slaves in Canada” or another similar book.

I remember reading this in the 6th grade. I liked it. I kind of wonder if it was this book that sparked my need to support human rights but I may never know. I remember being so happy when they reached Canada and freedom. I hope I find this book again so I can relive the memories and be able to physically share it with friends!

I read this novel for class and it was informative but I feel I could've went through even more than it did.  For the most part no swears except for the n word which was used quite frequently. I would not recommend this to immature children. Also SPOILERS!!! that when one of our side characters dies the girls don't even shed a single tear for their fallen friend who they were raised with.

3.65 stars. Great story, but I wish the book was actually written by someone who has lived through this event and is not white.
