A therapist recommended this to my husband to help him explore PTSD treatments that he can try and maybe get even more familiar with PTSD. I found this book informative, inspiring, hopeful, and heartbreaking. It was tough reading about the history of scapegoating PTSD research, and it was great reading about evolving treatments as discoveries are made. Strong content warnings for rape, child and domestic abuse, medical trauma, and many more.

This one had been on my list for a long time so it got a little overhyped in some ways. I thought it was going to have more detail about generational trauma.

A book that sheds light on the effects of trauma and abuse and how common it unfortunately is.

"We have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present. Trauma results in a fundamental reorganization of the way mind and brain manage perceptions. It changes not only how we think and what we think about, but also our very capacity to think."

This is a hard book to "recommend". It's a book about trauma and there are really graphic examples that almost make this book unbearable. Serious content warning here for anyone who has experienced PTSD, violence or SA.

I've been working through it for about a year, I had to put it aside a few times. A good part of this book consists of very clinical terminology so I think it was really targeted for mental health professionals. However, I thought the chapters towards the end were accessible and gave an interesting look into how trauma marks bodies in ways that we don't consciously notice.

I especially connected with the sections where the author writes about how theater, stories, music, and sports foster competence and collective bonding.

The author writes about Ubuntu, a Xhosa principle that means "My humanity is inextricably bound up in yours." Trauma breeds further trauma; hurt people hurt other people.

Maybe the world is becoming a more traumatic place but maybe we are just more conscious of the implications of trauma on ourselves and our families. Maybe more people are working to break the cycle.
