This is the kind of middle grade I love! It's creative and unique with all the different worlds (I especially enjoyed the little candy shop), but also a little complex with the schisms and the multiverse and not completely predictable. The protagonists in this one are interesting, too because their age often is hard to pinpoint. Flick seems to be on the verge of becoming a teenager, so slightly too old for a middle grade, and Jonathan plays the role of the grown-up while not yet being one either. The chemistry between them is interesting, too. I wonder if something more will develop between them. Initially, Flick's home situation reminded me a lot of [b:Coraline|17061|Coraline|Neil Gaiman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1493497435l/17061._SY75_.jpg|2834844], which made the whole book feel even more cozy. Very much looking forward to the sequel.

A decent story idea but several things bothered me about this book. There are a couple instances of swear words like god, hell and etc. That is completely unnecessary.
Also the attitude of the main character toward her family is rude, selfish and condescending.
The second main character is a 18 year old
man who is interacting with a 12ish year old girl, which creeped me out. That 18 year old man also manipulated and lied to this child to get what he wanted.

I will not be putting this series on the list to read for any of my children.

Flick's new town is turning out to be much, much worse than her new one. Until she stumbles upon the Strangeworlds Travel Agency. A meeting place for the multiverse, where every case brings you to a new and fascinating world. And every world is in danger...

This is the first in what promises to be a brilliant new series. It has the right mix of humour, action and magic; if there was just a tiny bit more banter I'd believe this was a Skulduggery Pleasant book. Flick is a great main character, Jonathan a fantastic mix of mentor and sidekick. The main story wraps up nicely, but there are enough threads left - including a few that, I'll admit, I was shouting at the page about - for at least two or three more books, and hopefully more beyond that. This series could run for a while and I hope it does. It's going to be a good one.

WELCOME, TRAVELLER, FOR YOU ARE AMONGST FRIENDS.

The porch had a bit of an overhang, to shelter people from rain, and once under it Flick felt as if she was standing in a little cocoon. She brushed a hand against the sandy brickwork, and some of the dusty masonry clung to her fingers. She rubbed it off on the outside wall. It was dented, and scratched. It had also been vadalised - the letters were scoured as though they had been attacked with a chisel. Flick could just make out the letters: 'ociety'.

She studied the big bay window. The glass, shining in the sunlight, seemed to look back at her. And Flick realised the shop wasn't really so grubby, after all.

It was...sort of beautiful. Like a book that's been read so many times the cover has fallen off and the pages have started to curl, or a soft bear that's had all its fur loved away.

Flick felt a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. There was a soft, affectionate feeling growing in her chest that she couldn't explain. Like the feeling you get when you see a photograph of a person taken before you met them. You recognise them, and you know you're going to meet them someday, but it's as though they're not quite...ready. Not yet.

She put a hand on the door and pushed.

(if I didnt start reading it in Czech it would've been 4 stars)

I can definitely blame the Czech translation of this book on me not enjoying the first 1/3 of this book, purely because of the fact that some things were mistranslated (there was one moment where Flick was asking about the suitcases, and Jonathan used a completely different word than Flick asked about - which left me confused and I had to re-read the page twice after that to see if I wasnt paying attention and missed something, but no, the translator just used a different word there. Definitely felt like the translator going "oh well the book is 9+, the kids are not going to notice this!"). And probably my biggest problem about the translation was the fact that oh hey, this book takes place in the UK so most of the main characters just have English names, and the translator of the book decided to rewrite Jonathan's name with the Czech spelling of his name - Jonatán - which was probably annoying me more than it should've. Because he was kinda the only main character whose name had different spelling and thus a different pronounciation.

Other than that I really enjoyed this book, even tho i felt like the book was taking forever to get started, don't get me wrong it was interesting from the the begining, but around 2/3 through the book is when I felt the action finally started. I also really enjoyed the narration of the audiobook, and I'm excited to listen to the other two. Hopefully the other novels won't have such a long start since a lot of things have already been explained.
