Pleasantly surprised by this book. I'm interested to see where it goes from here.
WOW! ok first I’ve got to say I love the writing style. The way that its an interrogation, but since you, as the reader, are not aware of the whole story, you’re left to find the answers as the interrogation progresses; that was awesome. I will say this, the first 1/2 of the book is basically a survival manual for the wilderness. Tarver and Lilac, the main characters, spend so much time in the forest, plains, mountains, just trying to survive, but the main character’s obvious liking and banter towards one another, makes all those wilderness parts entertaining. The structure of showing glimpses of the interrogation in the beginning of every chapter was clever, because it forces you to keep turning the page. The ending was good and it wasn’t a cliff hanger, like I thought it would be! Instead this book can be a standalone, and does not need sequels to complete it’s story.
I recommend this as a YA-SciFi novel, and I really enjoyed it.

I usually like slow books. But only if the story pays off and it's exceptionally written. I don't appreciate short YA sci fi books that should have an exciting plot to be this slow.
3.5 stars
This is a romance story in a survival/slightly SF setting, being on another planet. There wasn't much worldbuilding but the SF angle becomes more apparent as part of the survival story as it progresses.
I actually enjoy this type of story, and I thought the characters here were both mostly likeable. There wasn't as much spark in the telling as I was looking for, although I did think the last 100 pages or so turned up the emotions.

If I had known how solid of a book this was, I'd've read a long time ago. The writing here is great, which only emphasizes how great the characterization is. There is no insta-love here. For once it's realistic -- boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy has to really work to get girl. And despite Lilac being rich, spoiled, and often pompous, we still like her. That's not an easy feat for an author to do so it is even more impressive here. Combine all this with some great worldbuilding, and you're in for a hell of a trip. Just make sure to not take the Icarus, I hear it isn't safe.
Everything about These Broken Stars was a surprise to me. I checked it out of the library on a whim after seeing a mention of it online. For the first half of the book, it was a solid 3 star - fun but with prose that was a little too purple at times. It was an interesting mix: one part Firefly and one part Titanic. However, about halfway through the book, the authors threw a curve and added a dash of Lost, and I was suddenly very interested. Then, there is a super twisty twist in the final third that allows a character to work through some very real and raw grief, and suddenly a book set in a universe far, far away felt very down to earth. There are plot holes here but the space opera is so fun and weird that the reader forgives them. Sometimes it is good to be surprised!

These Broken Stars is an amazing YA sci-fi/fantasy romance. The story follows Lilac and Tarver as they struggle to survive after their spacecraft crashes. They are left to make their way across a hostile planet, completely alone, searching for rescue. But the planet seems to be home to something strange, and Lilac and Tarver start to think that they might be in more danger than they ever realized.
The negatives:
Characters didn't feel their ages.
I kept having to remind myself that these characters are supposed to be teenagers. Neither of them felt or sounded like teenagers to me - which was nice in a lot of ways (I may have preferred it). But I was surprised every time it was mentioned that Lilac was 16 (Tarver was a bit older, so his age didn't throw me as much).
What I LOVED:
Soft sci-fi.
For me, this was a plus (though true sci-fi fans might be disappointed). There were definitely sci-fi elements to this book, but it wasn't hardcore sci-fi. Once the spaceship crashes, Tarver and Lilac struggle to make their way through a foreign land, full of dangerous creatures and harsh conditions and Lilac is haunted by voices that only she can hear. It all felt a bit more like fantasy than sci-fi, which was perfect for me. It was the perfect blend of sci-fi, fantasy and adventure in my book.
The mystery.
There are so many mysteries set up in this book and twists and turns that I did not see coming. From the very beginning of the book, we know that Tarver (and, we assume, Lilac) have been rescued because we get snippets of Tarver's debrief (or, perhaps, interrogation?) at the beginning of each chapter. But these little snippets of information just serve to pique your interest more. How were
Tarver and Lilac rescued? What happened to them on that planet? What happened between them? When Lilac begins hearing voices, the questions just get bigger. And the payoff for all of these mysteries was amazing!
Tarver and Lilac.
I absolutely loved the romance in this book - it was perfectly done. It started out with a spark of interest between both characters, but there were realistic barriers that kept them apart and their initial interest turned toward a bit of antagonism - but that spark never quite went away. Instead it steadily grew as the characters started to let down their guard. Despite Lily's status as a debutante, her strength and tenacity won me over, just as it won Tarver over. Both of the characters went through an incredible amount of growth throughout this book, and I loved going on that journey with them!
I highly recommend this book! If you're a fan of futuristic fantasy with a touch of sci-fi, this is the book for you! I give it 5/5 stars.

This was ok. I did like the two characters, but the book was all consistent tone if high tension and struggle. I understand that fit the situation, but it was exhausting to read.
