Conforting and informative with the kind of information all people deserve access to. If repetitive and run-on at times, this was a fantastic resource for self reflection and hope.

this was a little hard to get through but super interesting! i struggled a little with the centering of veterans but i feel like this is more aimed at therapists (who have to treat all patients with compassion) than potential clients so i understand i don’t need to be comfortable with everything in here. overall this was so insightful and made me reflect a lot so i personally got a lot from this book, however, there is a lot of triggering content so i do advise proceeding with caution. it’s not perfect and there’s a lot of controversy surrounding the author but i still going it worth reading.

Incredible book. At times it was hard to listen to due to how heavy the subject matters were and it was necessary to step away sometimes. I learned a lot about the brain, myself, childhood, and possibilities. As an actor, reading about theatre and the positive work it can do with trauma made my heart sing. The arts can be such a blessing and so many don’t even see it or are so quick to cancel it when funding is tight. Highly recommend this book.

This book is truly extraordinary, I love it so much as someone recently reliving a trauma through nightmares and flashbacks this book has been so validating and helpful.

If u work with kids or in any social services you should read

Kind of repetitive

Did NOT like the intro to veterans-warm crimes were obviously committed and just kind of brushed over

This book represents the life’s work of a Psychiatrist trying to unravel and heal trauma. It unfolds the experience of trauma in a way that makes it accessible to people who have not lived in a traumatised body. This book would be quintessential in my opinion to any health professional working with trauma patients. Very glad i’ve read it although it could feel a bit slow at times.

Felt too technical and I kept not paying attention.

Also wasn’t a fan of the  authors writing , especially at the beginning. The whole structure of the book seemed sporadic. At the beginning, when he’s talking about the history of psychiatry, every time he mentions how messed up or backwards a practice was, he always absolves himself by adding something like “I always thought that was a bad practice” or “I always knew that was a bad way of treating patients.” That very well might be true, but the amount of times he says it made me suspicious. And I thought it was odd.

I did learn a few really interesting things, just wish I could have gotten into it more
