I really was looking forward to this, as I am very into meditating, yoga, and health sciences in general. However, I was massively disappointed. This reads like a Cosmo article with lots of "woo-woo-secret-magic" sounding content. If you are looking for a science based approach with factual content, this isn't what you're looking for.

I was hoping for much more science-based, actionable information in this book. Use of the word ‘science’ in the title is misleading if you’re hoping for that. The author was part of a scientific study, and he shares his experience with that, but that’s where any notion of the scientific method ends.

Certainly a large take-away from this book is “breath through your nose” (albeit with only anecdotal support), but I already do, so that was of passing interest only to me. The rest of the book was superficial and anecdotal stories of a variety of breathing techniques and exercises - which, while interesting, lack the depth and background to be life-changing. Perhaps this is unsurprising, given the author is a journalist rather than a medical practitioner.

Overall, a disappointment.

Very interesting concept- how we breathe is taking away from our quality of life. Much of this is due to circumstances outside our control (evolution, stress) but it is something that we can, with intentionality, begin to reverse. The first half grabbed me and I couldn't stop reading - very practical and I am now consciously breathing through my nose at every opportunity. The second half was a bit of a slog - less practical, more fringe, it felt a lot like Michael Pollen's LSD research, only with breathing instead of hallucinogens.

I love this quick and informative read. I think everyone can benefit from reading this book and applying for of its teachings to our life. While I don't believe in the solves all our problems angle that a book like this promotes there are a lot of problems with the western lifestyles and connecting us to our ancestors and ancient practices is definitely a step in solving these woes. Highly recommend.
