I thought this book had a plethora of information that so many people can benefit from, whether you are a person with actual health concerns like diabetes, are trying to lose weight, or you are trying to advise patients about options to improve their health, particularly natural options like fasting. I’m giving it 4 stars mostly because the book is very repetitive when talking about the history of fasting, the mechanisms on how insulin plays a role in the body and how beneficial it is to certain diseases like diabetes.

3.5 stars to be precise. It did help me get some clarity on fasting, but I was filled with too many numbers and charts for my liking. It probably is because I had a different expectation from the book and wasn't looking at Fasting from a scholastic purpose.

I wanted a different take on fasting, especially intermittent fasting (IF). This is good intro to it, and I find the content refreshing, insightful and thought-provoking. My current tests on IF have been enlightening.

Read for personal interest. The photos at the end were lovely. Not recommended for anyone with an ED.

When I first saw women in some of my fitness Facebook groups mentioning fasting or intermittent fasting, I rolled my eyes. Obviously this is not a healthy thing to do. However, as I heard more information from fitness industry names that I respect, I became intrigued. I listened to this audiobook to get more information and to find out if this is something I might want to try myself.
If you are interested in learning more about fasting, I highly recommend this book. The author goes into painstaking detail to explain what exactly happens to your body when it is in a fasting state, and why it is helpful, and not harmful - if done correctly. He also lays out proper step by step processes for various fasts.
In a nutshell, when one is not taking in calories, the body goes into a fasting state - which is different from the state one goes into on a very low calorie diet (where you can throw your metabolism out of whack). The author recommends consuming bone broth during your fast. I won't try to recap all the information here, if you are at all interested in learning more check out the book.
In addition to being a proven weight loss method (obvi!), fasting has also been shown to have a variety of positive effects on the body such as lowered blood sugar, lowered cholesterol, and lowered blood pressure. Again this is all explained in detail in the book. These "side effects" are what convinced me to give it a go myself! I just started, and will post an update in future.

I’m not going to write a review on a diet book that my doctor made me read. But let’s say that the plot of this one sits squarely in the horror genre for the whole “not eating” part.

Good information, well researched and easily readable. Was a bit repetitive.

It's very sciencey so it took me a couple of days to get through it. But I did highlight the crap outta it. I told my mom who is diabetic to read it. There's a lot of detailed info about that. I'm dipping my toe into all things fasting for a couple of weeks now. I've been on keto for a year and doing really well on it, so I thought I would try fasting out and switch things up. I wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly since there is so much info out there. So far I really like it. I'm checking out other books now just to see all the different point of views on it.

Considering this is called the "complete guide", I expected it to go into a lot more scientific detail than it actually did. Slightly disappointing, but I'm perhaps not the target audience in that I consider myself to be pretty obsessed about the topic.
Useful for people who don't know much about the benefits of fasting and are curious to understand for once and for all what the differences are between say, 5:2 and 16:8, and to get questions like, "Won't I lose muscle mass?" answered.
