A Lesson in Vengeance

Victoria Lee

3.59 AVERAGE

This book has everything a person could want: witchcraft, a queer romance, physiological warfare on your romantic partner, murder!!

Dark academia is a trope that I love, and this is a great case study of why our interests can leak into an unhealthy obsession if we aren't kept in check and an even better example of why it's important to keep on track with your medications if you struggle with that.

Felecity is a great character for a lot of reasons: my favorite being is that she is a mess. She has so many problems, and at the end of the book she still has all of the problems that she had at the start of the books but she's dealt with them in some shape and she has acknowledged them. She's grown from her journey and didn't magically become perfect at the end.

Ellis was a great villain to have because we didn't expect her really, not all the time. There were times that I thought maybe this one ain't all there but I thought they'd be happily ever after in the end and boy was I wrong!! And I loved it!

I loved how unhinged this book was from start to finish.
dark tense medium-paced

4.5 stars.

I'm not that objective when it comes to Victoria Lee's book because I love what they write so freaking much!! Victoria's writing style is one of my favourite out there. It's the perfect mixed between poetic, atmospheric and simple enough not to give me an headache when I read it!

Even though this book is classified as a YA thriller, you should know that it's for an older audience.

This book was a very atmospheric read and I wish I had read it in October with the chilly wind and Halloween vibe. It would've been perfect. But there was no way I could've waited until then to read it. Dalloway boarding school scream lesbians and witchcraft the second we set foot in it and to tell you the truth, I wasn't mad about it in the slightest. The setting in itself draw you in the story on it's own. The character keep you in it.

I really loved Felicity Morrow. The book was told in her POV, first person, and it didn't bother me. I find that most of the time when we follow a first person POV of a female character all trough the book I want to smash that character in the face at some point. It didn't feel like it with Felicity. She was intriguing and refreshing even with all her problems. And following her was simply a wonderful adventure. The way her story - past and present - was told made me want to dig inside her head. To see what she saw and figure out all the small mysteries in her life.

Ellis was a bit harder to follow for me. She gave so much mixed feeling that I found it hard sometimes to understand her but it was totally part of her character. It made her so different from Felicity and it was entertaining to follow them both.

One of the most important thing in this book was the way mental health was included. It wasn't just a simple mention in the book. It was at it's core. It brought to the readers attentions heavy topic like psychotic depression, isolation, drinking problems and many others (see trigger warning bellow).

I won't talk about the thriller part of the book to much. I will simply say how complex it was and honestly it delivered so well! I was curious all trough the book to know exactly what happened and I didn't see it coming.

Well in one simple word I really love that story! If you are looking for a sapphic dark academia thriller, this book is for you!

Trigger warnings :
Death
Violence
Manipulation and emotional abuse
Child neglect (past/offscreen)
Mental health issues
Substance abuse
Suicide references (no actual suicide)
References to racist history at a PWI

Thank you so much to Delecorte Press and Netgalley for providing an e-arc copy! All thoughts and opinions are still my own!

Dark academia at its finest! This dark, ominous read pulled me in and didn't release me until the very last page. I'm completely blown away by Victoria Lee's writing and the witchy atmosphere she created throughout this entire book.

The shining star of this novel is definitely its lush, dark atmosphere. This entire book feels feverish and dream-like. This school felt so real - like a haunted boarding school of witches really sits in the Catskills. I was so wrapped up in this world and never knew whether or not paranormal things were actually happening. I also loved how Felicity's thesis so clearly paralleled her actual life. It was honestly genius.

The characters in here are eerie and strange and I never trusted a single one of them. But I was completely and utterly fascinated by them throughout the entire book.

Victoria Lee did a fantastic job of pacing and timing by sprinkling small reveals throughout the story, keeping me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. I was frantically flipping through the pages by the end, trying to discover where the was leading (and I was ALWAYS wrong!).

If you want a fast paced, gripping dark academia novel that isn't afraid to go there and scare the pants off of you - add this to your TBR! It's definitely on the upper end of YA (this book is DARK).

Content warnings: Animal sacrifice, Death, Depression, Paranoia, Hospitalization, Child neglect, PTSD, Murder, Substance abuse

Really wish I was one of those people who didn’t feel the need to finish a book even if they hate it

I didn't expect most of the plot twists which made the reading experience even better. Still trying to process what happened in the last 1/4 of the book.
But it was something. SOMETHING!!
I'm glad to say that i was expecting so much from this book and it was worth it, i loved how the characters, the Dalloway school and its history, the witchcraft, the whole dark academia atmosphere were written!

I love books with unreliable narrators. Is she crazy? Did she do it? Is she lying? I can’t tell and I love it. Dark academia vibes 10/10. Lesbians 10/10. It kept me on my toes. The ending could have been tweaked a bit yes but I still love this book

hm. i don't have much to say about this one, which often acts as an indicator of my enjoyment. i wanted to like this much more than i did, in the end. i could probably explore what exactly about this novel didn't work for me, but i'm just content to be done with it. i wish i liked it more :(

This book is nothing like the synopsis on the back. It took over 350 pages to get to anything close to what was described. I'm incredibly disappointed in this read and how it ended.
