READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE YOU START THIS BOOK
Raise your hand if you've ever been personally victimized by Daddy Beans telling you to respect yourself 🙋🏻♀️
This book made me feel a lot of things that I was pretty sure I had buried somewhere unreachable. Mika's struggle with her own trauma response (rage) adds a layer of complexity to her character. The woman has been through A LOT.
The beginning was a bit of a struggle for me to get through because there was a lot of repetition and at points I was like, "Can we move on already?" But I'm glad I kept reading because the book got really good and really intense not long after.
This book also features found family and we all know by now that I'm a complete sucker for that trope. Here's hoping that Mika gets to go to therapy in book 2 so she can let herself be happy because damn does she deserve it.

Review
I received this book as an ARC, and I can truly say I’ve enjoyed my first ARC experience. I’ve had a wonderful time talking about the book and thoroughly enjoyed R. Moody’s debut novel! Before we get too deep into the review it’s probably worth noting that there is some dark content in this book and I would definitely recommend checking out the Trigger/Content Warnings, which can be found on Moody’s website here.
The book started off a little bit quicker than I anticipated, but this is definitely more down to me personally rather than a comment on the book and the writing. Through the first half of the book, you are quickly introduced to a fab group of characters, and despite not being with them for very long you rather quickly grow to love them. The main character Mika is very complicated, and you can tell straight away that there is more to her than meets the eye, and I loved her growth throughout the book.
I don’t like to give away plot points in my reviews, but the book had me on the edge of my seat more than once, and I definitely felt a wide range of emotions.
I NEED the next book. I need it. I needed it before the epilogue, and then the epilogue just killed me all over again.
If you love snarky FMCs, then this book is for you. I won’t lie needed a book that scratched that Throne of Glass itch, and this book did it for me.
Would I read it again? Absolutely.

Mika is a badass. If you need a cast of morally grey characters this is the book for you.
R. Moody creates a world where those who are gifted can be sold to the highest bidder, but those who have junk gifts are basically ignored. Enter Mika and crew.
There’s platonic love and romance. Grumpy x sunshine, one bed, touch her/him and die - it has it aaalllll.
I loved this book and can’t wait to see what happens in the sequel.
Thank you so much to the author for letting me read an ARC of this one!
This was a really solid start to a fantasy series and a great debut novel. The worldbuilding was unique, complex and very well done, as was the refreshing take on the magic system.
Mika, the main character, portrays a very relatable juxtaposition of being both a fierce, independent woman, while also having a lot of insecurities, feelings that she is unworthy, and trauma. Getting to see this unravel and come to light as the book progressed was really interesting and felt very genuine.
The found family trope really came in hot! I loved the banter, and how accepting these people were of Mika (despite her surprise, suspicions and likely side-eye).
This is well written and is in first-person, single POV with very descriptive writing, making it easy to immerse yourself into the story.
The first half of the book feels quite cosy, with things really ramping up in the second half and then going ballistic in the last 10% to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I'm looking forward to news of the second book and will be eager to pick up where this one left off!

I really loved this book and I'm so happy the author chose me to be on her ARC team! The descriptions of the world, the food (seriously droolworthy it always sounded so good), the people... they were all so beautiful and even with it being 100% a fantasy world I could truly envision the world through Mika's eyes. The magic system was also interesting and it was a fun change to see the main characters be so strong even though their magical abilities are considered "junk" in their world. It sucked me in!!
Mika is a badass assassin who has experienced a ton of trauma but she's so strong and resilient. (Definitely check trigger warnings.) The found family dynamic she finds herself in was so heartwarming and seeing Mika learn to love and let people in was also so well done. I loved every one of the characters and loved the LGBTQ rep. There were parts of the book that wrecked me emotionally in the best way, especially between Mika and Riley as she struggles with her attraction and feelings for him.
I'm so sad it ended on a cliffhanger and will be (im)patiently waiting for book 2! I can't wait to see what happens next!!

First of all I'm OBSESSED with this cover! This is everything. It's like I can hear her scream, this cover really speaks to me!
"Once an assassin, always an assassin"
Review - 3.75 - 4 ⭐️
The story starts with a retired assassin and nanny name Mika. She is then sold to another kingdom to rescue a important missing person. She gets on this journey with a crew of 4 people who will change how she view herself.
I loved the world building. It was a enjoyable journey to follow the crew get to new places and discover different kingdoms. The magic system is very well explained and described as well as the settings. It was easy to imagine where they were even thought it is a complexe world.
The plot did keep me engage throughtout the story. I thought the pace was a bit slow at times but it did get better.
Concerning the characters, they were well constructed and I understood each personnalities. I didn't connected with everyone of them, but they were all necessary to the story. I also loved the LGBTQ+ rep and cast!
The FMC Mika as an assassin I thought she was a little childish, however she had moments where her strenght shine throught, especially at 50% of the book and forward.
The last 10 chapters tho! I was not expecting that twist I really loved that it was action packed. I'm very curious for the second book. I hope we get to see more of that assassin qualities and emotional growth she has to go throught.
Thank you to the author for the oportunity to read this ARC.

ARC Review:
Null & Void by R. Moody is the first book in the Patrons of the Divine series. I truly enjoyed this entire book! The characters were all amazing and the plot was so entertaining. This was such a great fantasy read. The world building and magic system was easy to understand. This book was action packed, banter filled, and had such great romance. I loved the entire group of characters! The found family in this book was so heartwarming and I just loved their dynamic. I need the next book immediately!!! This ended on a cliffhanger and what a cliffhanger it was! I need to know what happens next!
Mika was BADASS!! I loved her character a lot. She was so funny and I loved how she still had vulnerable moments but she was not weak or meek at all. She was a strong FMC! Riley was hilarious and I loved him so much! I loved how he never gave up on Mika! I am rooting for Mika and Riley to get their HEA! Tovi, Daddy Beans, and Bitty were all amazing characters! I am such a fan of Daddy Beans! I loved this whole crew of characters! They all had great personalities and depth! I truly enjoyed this story. I could not stop reading this book! I am very much looking forward to book 2. That was such a crazy ending and it makes me want book 2 even more! I highly recommend this book if you like morally grey FMC, found family, magic, adventure, and a cinnamon roll prince MMC!!!

first off i’m OBSESSED with the cover. they say don’t judge a book by it’s cover but damn it’s hard not to with this one.
i truly went through it with the FMC- every single emotion was felt, and following along with the twist and turns of the story was a riiiiide.
i love the found family and each of the characters, not even truly sure i could pick a favourite out of the bunch (but actually bitty and beans hehe) the dynamic is fun to follow along with the main quest! each of their personalities is a great recipe for the group.
so much happened but all were relevant to furthering the plot along. the worldbuilding and food descriptions were great as well, made me hungry a fair few times just reading about mika’s meals!
my biggest critique is the ending… because now i have to wait patiently for the sequel.

~There is only one thing worse than being born a Patron of the Divine;
being branded Null & Void.
Absent of a Gift~
To be able to read this before it goes out to the world has truly been a highlight of my reading this year.
R.Moody has created an incredible world, rich with history, lore and intrigue.
The characters have depth and progression and enjoyably diverse stories.
Our leading lady, Mika, is an absolute badass with a complex background, present, and possibly future!
The people she meets along the way, especially the other main characters, are so enjoyable that you want to travel with them yourself!
Found family is key and the rising sexual tension between Mika and Riley is delicious.
I loved how much time was spent building and giving background, the flashback/memories and multiple POV perspectives.
Even more I loved the absolute chaos in my brain reading the last leg of the book. I wanted to finish so badly, but I also didn’t want to finish at all! Waiting for book 2 is going to be agonising but worth it!
Thank R.Moody for having me on your Arc team 💜. 5 ⭐️ read and experience.
