Well, first off, I wasn't really looking forward to this book to begin with. I'll be honest. Mainly because I wasn't really sure it would live up to the main Night Huntress books, which I love so much. I figured that without Cat and Bones on the forefront of the story, it would be lacking. Well, at least in my opinion, I was right. This book just didn't have the appeal that the Night Huntress books have.

Let me give you a rundown of what this is about. Spade, Bones' best friend and vampire, is called by Denise, Cat's human best friend. She calls him because her family members keep mysteriously dying and the cops think she's crazy for thinking they're being murdered. She needs help finding out what's really going on, but she's been out of contact with the vampire world for about a year, since her husband Randy's death. His death happened in [b:At Grave's End|3570231|At Grave's End (Night Huntress, #3)|Jeaniene Frost|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1275610523s/3570231.jpg|3612435], I believe. I could be wrong on that though. I'm not sure if it happened in that book or in [b:Destined for an Early Grave|6987428|Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, #4)|Jeaniene Frost|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1273275890s/6987428.jpg|5776219]. Anyways, after this happened she cut off her ties with the vampire world, including Cat. So, she doesn't have any way to contact anyone. But, she remembers she still has Spade's number from an incident that happened awhile ago as well (in one of those book as well). So, she calls him for his help. What they both don't expect is the attraction that blooms between them.

So my biggest peeve with this book is Denise. She is one of the most annoying heroines I've come across in a while. She does all my least favorite things that put her on my i-want-to-kick-this-heroine-in-the-face list:

1) She's a bitch to the hero at all times and constantly pushing him away, even when he's being nice to her.
2) She's completely self conscious all the time. She has no confidence in herself, her feelings, or the feelings of the hero towards her.
3) She refuses to believe anything but being human is okay. She has extreme prejudices against the paranormal, but she uses paranormal beings when she needs their help.
4) Despite that she's a human, she thinks she's just as strong as the vampires and other paranormal creatures and gets seriously offended when she's told to stay behind during battle. She can fight too dammit! She may be exponentially weaker than her opponent, but don't make her feel useless!
5) She has extreme baggage that she isn't willing to let go, no matter what. I get that she misses Randy and that her family is dying all around her. But what I don't get is who she places the blame on. It's beyond annoying when it gets to be a constant cloud hanging over her all the time.
6) My favorite...She leaves behind those who are strong enough to fight her enemy in an effort to prove she can do it herself. Why would she enlist the help that's been there all along when she can run off and get herself killed all by her lonesome?

I could probably go on. But that's enough. She's annoying and I didn't like her even in the slightest. I never once understood why Spade was drawn to her and I was disappointed that this ended up being his heroine because I thought he deserved more. Spade himself was a bit boring in this book as well though. I liked him in the other Night Huntress books, but it almost seems like a different man was in these books because he was nothing like the joking light-hearted vampire we met originally.

In addition to those downfalls, this book, the romance between Denise and Spade, and the action, all just fell extremely flat. Nothing was really exciting and I didn't really care about the main characters. The humor, sexiness, and kick-ass action we get in the main books via Bones and Cat's interaction was null and void here. I only laughed once in this book (but because of Ian), and that's one of the things I love most about Night Huntress, is the humor! I was extremely disappointed in that.

One thing I did like about this book: Ian. I can't believe I'm saying this, but he was my favorite character in this book! Even when Cat and Bones made an appearance, Bones' usual light and humorous mood was not really there. But Ian made for a bit of comedy relief and I just really fell in love with his character in this book in a way I haven't previously. The scene where he comes back singing Pirates of Penzance made me look forward to his book immensely.

So overall, this was a real disappointment. I hope the next book about Mencheres is better than this one because this was not up to par with the Night Huntress books in the least.

I really enjoyed Denise and Spade's book. It was interesting to see the Night Huntress world from a different perspective.

Due to reading Night Huntress #5 before reading 'First Drop of Crimson' I already knew a lot of what was going to happen in the book, but I was glad to finally connect the dots a bit (aka. Discover how relationships started, how events unfolded).

I liked that there was still sort of a pattern. Despite being different people. Spade was still a British-convict-turned-vampire, and Denise was another young American woman thrown into the supernatural world against her will. But the characters are unique that you could never mistake them for Bones and Cat.

I was surprised with how much I loved Ian in this book. He was just so funny, it was hard to dislike him. I haven't hated him in the other Night Huntress books, but he was never one of my favourite characters, but I definitely see him in a different light now.

I liked seeing Cat use her special vampire powers again, except I would have liked to be in her head, experiencing what she felt.

Overall a fabulous book. Love everything Night Huntress.

This is a book in the Night Huntress world, and it ties into the main series, set after #4.

Denise is Cat's best friend. During a mass attack of undead, Denise's husband was torn apart. This turned Denise off so thoroughly to the undead world that she even has cut ties to Cat.

Unfortunately for her, generations ago, a demon made a deal with a relative of hers and the demon now wants his prey. His clever plan first involved simply killing all of the prey's relatives, but then he finds out the Denise has access to vampires and his prey must be in with vampires or the demon would have found him.

Enter Spade -- Bones' best friend, who Denise knew and was attracted to back in the day. She enlists his help because she does not want to risk Cat.

PNR goodness follows.

I really liked this read. It had unique characters. The erotic scenes were quite good and the action was excellent and continuing. The choice to have the human (OK, sort of human at that point) deal with the demon in the end (instead of vampires doing the violence) was quite good.

as much as i enjoy reading about cat and bones, a change of pace was indeed much needed. spade and denise were such a fun couple to follow, and this was probably the most interesting action in this series thus far. also, sorry cat, but denise is genuinely the most logical and straight-thinking person in this friend group. cat's brazen "bravery" that keeps getting people hurt was pissing me off. also everything about bones was pissing me off. so.

good action, pining, vampires, and demons. what more could a girl ask for!

I had wondered about Denise, now I know. I am glad for them, and look forward to reading more about Spade, Denise, Nathaniel and the rest of the characters from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Series (and spin-offs/novels/novellas).

For those of you who are new to these characters. "First Drop of Crimson" is the first book of the Night Huntress World series, which features stories about characters from the Night Huntress Series. This first book tells the story of Spade and Denise. (If you haven't heard of them, I highly recommend you read the Night Huntress series; it will make everything more clear, interesting, and make the story more meaningful.) Denise is faced with a serious problem and only Spade can help her (Bones and Cat are on vacation in New Zealand; don't worry we do see them in this book). Can Spade and Denise save her family in time? And what are they going to do with the undeniable pull they feel towards each other?

I really enjoyed this book after I got over the fact that Denise & Spade will never be as kickass as Cat & Bones.Their romance had a certain sweetness that the Cat & Bones series lacks because Denise was so vulnerable and in need of a hero whereas Cat is more than capable of taking care of herself.
