Struggled with a rating for this as some of the stories deserved a five whilst others only a two.
Went with a four because I enjoyed the read of most of them.

I recommend this to anyone who loves a fairytale... There a story in there to suit everybody.

I'm generally not attracted to short stories because I can't get immersed in them. I loved fairy tales as a child, though, so when this book was recommended by one of my students, I ordered it and put it at the top of my TBR. I'm giving it 4 stars because while I don't like the format of the book, most of the individual stories were very well written. I especially liked "Blood is Thinner" and "Beauty and the Chad", both of which dealt with young women overcoming their circumstances and discovering their own power. "Better" was hauntingly disturbing, while "Skin Trade" was just gruesome. This might be a good introduction to various YA authors for reluctant readers, especially if given 'permission' to skip the stories they aren't interested in.

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Granted some were a little too strange for my tastes, but most of them I highly enjoyed. My favorite story was "A Real Boy" by Claudia Gray.

I really enjoyed this overall, since it is an anthology I'l do a brief review for each story.

*will updated/finish this review soon*

"The Key" 2/5
I didn't really enjoy this one, it wasn't horrible I just found it a bit boring. The things that seemed like they were supposed to be shocking reveals were things I predicted, which was probably why I didn't really like this one.

"Figment" 5/5
I really loved this one, probably my favorite short story I've ever read honestly. It's about a stuffed cat who is part good luck charm, part imaginary friend, and part pure magic and the person who owns him. The ending was bittersweet but very well done.

"The Twelfth Girl" 5/5
This was another one I really enjoyed. The plot was really well developed for the limited amount of pages and kept me interested the whole time. The ending left things up to the imagination and I wish their was more, but still very enjoyable.

"The Raven Princes" 4/5

I received a Kindle copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review:
(3.5 stars)
Because this book was a compilation of different author's short stories, some were bound to be good and some were bound to be bad. For the most part, there were more good short stories in this collection than bad. Some of the stories were creepy and others funny. It was a good mixture, but by the end of reading it, I was ready to be done reading re-writes of Grim fairy tales. There were a few standout stories that really made me wish that they would be transferred into a novel. I read this on my Kindle, but you should check out this book in hardback; it's pretty gorgeous.

I enjoyed the stories, but thought some of the writing needed a polish.

A collection of short stories by famous young adult authors. These stories take on the classic Grim tales, and put their own twists on them. The stories are all filled with magic, and the paranormal that gives them something interesting and worthy of reading. Some, more than others, the reader can tell which story is the inspiration for their tale, for example Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, and Hansel and Gretel are just a few. Some it seems the author totally reinvents, while others re-write the classic in a more modern day setting, which is good, but a little boring. This collection also puts into perspectives which authors are good at writing short stories, and the ones that have quite cracked the code just yet. Overall, it was fun to read and see all these authors come together to create this piece of work.

This is a great anthology filled with creative interpretations of classic fairy tales. As with all anthologies, some stories are better than others. Here are my personal favourites:

Figment by Jeri-Smith Ready
The Raven Princess by Jon Skovron
Thinner Than Water by Saundra Mitchell
Untethered by Sonia Gensler
Better by Shaun David Hutchinson
A Real Boy by Claudia Gray
Beauty And The Chad by Sarah Rees Brennan
Sell Out by Jackson Pearce

This collection is a heady mix of modernization, traditionalism, queer and straight romances, religion, revenge, witchcraft, dark tragedy and silly comedy. There's something for every reader in these pages to enjoy.
