Verity by Colleen Hoover is a compulsively readable romantic suspense novel. I listened to the audiobook, which clocks in at a little over eight hours and is narrated by Vanessa Johansson and Amy Landon. If you have an Audible Plus membership, it's included through the end of October 2022.

This is my first read by the author, and I've heard so many different things about CoHo. Some people love her books, some people hate them. I think she included a self-reference in this book:

"I'd trolled Verity's reviews before coming here, and in nine out of ten of them, the reviewer referenced wanting to throw their kindles or books across the room."

This book starts out dark, and gets even darker as you keep reading. The content is pretty rough for various reasons. Check the content warnings before you pick this one up. My jaw literally dropped several times throughout this book. It's laid out in a frame story, and the internal story is a bit trauma porn with a side dish of erotica.

Hoover's prose flows very well, and I think she's fairly skilled as a writer. She is particularly good at putting a hook at the end of a chapter that makes you want to read the next one as soon as possible. I call this style of writing potato chip prose. Once you pop, you can't stop, you know? It's easy to see why her books are so popular.

By the end of the book, a few of my theories were correct, so I felt very vindicated.

CW: accidental death (on-page), fatphobia, absent/abusive parents, child abuse, toxic relationships (obsession), death of parent (referenced), cancer (referenced), self-harm, attempted murder, murder, infidelity, ableism

The more I think about this book the more I actually despise this book. It only got one star because it was slightly better than The Silent Patient. SLIGHTLY.

this SHOCKED ME. ms hoover needs to write more thrillers.

however i just feel a bit funny about the disability rep/views portrayed in the book to give it a 5 star rating. like yh the whole book was yucky and I LOVE THAT. but i think it’s the subtle ableism in it that i draw the line ygm.

talking about disability rep in the book:
the they’re better off dead than disabled trope (awful). the faking disability, adding to a lot of ableism in society. “asperger’s” being used rather than ASD. the portrayal that autistic people have no emotions and are capable of murder bc they have no emotions. incredibly yucky.

My first CoHo book, and I’d say it was a success. This book had me scared to walk around my house at night, and it will probably stay that way for a few days.. Lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed not knowing who to trust as the book went on. Is something up with Verity? Is Lowen an unreliable narrator? I liked the way it ended too
I’m excited to discuss the ending with friends that have also read it to see which version of Verity’s stories they think is true!

Will definitely be picking up more of Hoover’s books in the future!

meh didn't really like the book and it was very predictable. I feel like a lot of the appeal comes from the scandal of it all but it's just poorly written and I’m not super interested in this sensationalism. feels like it's just a bunch of sad and dark stuff thrown in together for a sad and dark soup
