In Nick Stefanos’ second outing, he is now officially a PI. Nick’s Trip has him taking on two cases, one of a friend whose murder had gone unsolved long enough, the other in the person of a childhood friend who walks through the door of the bar in which Nick supposedly works part time; he spends more time there than doing any actual investigating. While Nick’s world only touches the city life that Pelecanos has become known for exploring, he still finds new and refreshing ways to examine the complexities of living a powerless existence on the streets of Washington, DC while going virtually ignored by the transient powerbrokers who run a nation. Pelecanos creates an environment where cut-and-dried solutions are in no way feasible, then forces Nick to find other means. While not the pure detective story that was [b:A Firing Offense|307534|A Firing Offense|George Pelecanos|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1328705169s/307534.jpg|298504], Nick’s Trip is still worth taking.
A Holmes knock-off that tries very hard to imitate the original Conan Doyle style. However, I found the writing a bit too simple, not quite the density of the original. Horowitz tries to amend for the lack of compassion in the originals for characters like Mrs Hudson and the Baker Street boys by acknowledging how the originals took them for granted. The bad guys are too quick to confess in this story, the mystery too grizzly and not suave enough. It's ok, but I lost interest and it never really had me in its grasp as I wanted to be.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
These Burning stars is the first book in a sci-fi trilogy set in the Kindom the ruling power of the solar system. Where a secret about a genocide could blow the Kindom’s balance apart.
This is one of those sci-fi novels that at the start feeds a lot of information to the reader, which means that the first 10% of the novel can be difficult to get into, however once you get past this you have a novel that works as a good read.
This is just as well as no matter what the genre is, what makes the story is the plot line, characters and the writing style.
Firstly with the plot line we have wat is basically a conspiracy thriller with a piece of information which as come to lite which can blow the foundation of the Kindom, as it involves the genocide of a race in this starr system.
However rather than be a simple 2000’s novel this goes the way of a crime novel as one of the Characters six tries to use this information for their advantage.
We now move on to the second part of the novel which is the characters, which due to the books length of over 400 pages allowed Bethany Jacobs to give each of the main characters a well thought out description and back story,
Especially in the main characters Six and Esek who are the main rivals of the novel, there were times in the novel that it was difficult as a reader to tell who was who, but this was more of the way that characters were able to change gender and the way the story was written rather than any difficulty with the writing.
The writing style while at times did get slightly confusing for me, this was more to do with the nature of the Sc-fi genre rather than any failings of Bethany Jacobs writing, however after a few pages I was able to follow the story and plot line with less difficulty.
All this makes These Burning Stars (The Kindom Trilogy #1) by Bethany Jacobs well with reading especially if you are into the genre.

I wanted to like this and have it shift my habits. While the text describing some of the science was worth reading, I felt like the chronotypes ultimately were similar to horoscopes as I could find parts of myself in all of the descriptions. Don’t waste your time with this book/read this hoping for feasible recommendations if:
-you have a job anywhere traditional that doesn’t let employees run their schedules and infuse personal life (i.e., naps?!) into the work day (aka anywhere but Google )
-you have a job that requires you wake up prior to 6am
-you have kids
this book was a major womp womp for me. Would have been one star except the sleep and eating science was interesting

I have new found trust issues because of this book. I am baffled by the length some humans will go to for scraps of power. It‰ЫЄs eye opening and interesting to see how dangerous and exhilarating politics can be and how there‰ЫЄs always someone ready to surprise you. This series is a lot on the nerves and on the heart. I‰ЫЄm trying really hard to like Jude but her persistence on power and control is making it really hard to relate especially when she‰ЫЄs suffered so much already and the stakes are as ever high. Inspiring in her persistence and tragic in her need to.
Interesting idea, but the love story part ruins the whole story.
Fast-paced and exciting, a great take on how the powers of a superhero can really go wrong.
wouldnt have finished this book if it wasnt for book club.
wished the book had been focused on 1 thing, felt like he tried to tackle too many topics.
or could have been accomplished in a blog post.

It's sooooo nice to understand my chronotype and what that means for me. Also interesting to see my wife's chronotype and how we can work with each other.
