The Delphi Effect is captivating. It contains element of the paranormal–—Anna is picks up spirits who have something they need to accomplish before they can go to the Great Beyond. But is also contains elements of science fiction—Anna’s gift didn’t necessarily come to her naturally and perhaps the Government has something to do with it.

Check out the full review on my blog to learn the moment I knew there was no turning back and I had to finish the book.

Hot damn was this ever good! It was nothing what I expected and yet somehow everything I wanted to read in a book.

The concept, while revolving around gifted kids and the government suppressing/trying to control them, felt fresh and fun. The psychic, mental abilities highlighted here are, likewise, fresh and fun. Particularly Anna's. Lost souls hitch a ride in her head, asking that she help them do that one thing that is preventing them from leaving. And when they do, she retains their memories and their skills. It's such a cool idea!

Overall, the suspense and intrigue runs high, the cast of characters are great, and the world-building solid. Can't wait to dive into book 2!

I kind of found my way to this book by happy accident. I had won a giveaway for what turned out to be book 2 in this series, and disliking starting a series in the middle, I had to buy the first. And I'm really glad I did.

This was like a blend of Firestarter and X-Men. There's some shady government doings, teens (and some adults) with superhuman abilities, and a serial killer.

For my taste, there was almost too much teen "crushing" going on. Isn't he dreamy? How do I feel about him? Does he think of me the same way? Ugh. Just walking the borderline of Cringeville, Population 2.

I also wasn't a fan of the ending. It felt really rushed after such a steady and tension-filled build-up. I get that there's a sequel (or two, actually), but I really like it better when a book feels complete and you have the option of continuing on with the characters if you want, instead of books like this where you almost feel cheated by the lack of a complete resolution and you have to pick up the next book if you want to know what happens next.

Fortunately, I already have the next book, and I'll get around to reading it sooner or later.

4 out of 5 stars.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This one was hard to rate. I kept going between three and four stars. I really enjoyed it but I still know that it had its issues. but because of the fact that I really enjoyed it I have decided on four stars.

I've read from Rysa Walker before and have enjoyed everything I've read. But this book is by far my favorite of hers. The story is one that I love reading about and when it's done realistically it makes me love it even more. I don't see a lot of psychic type stories. Mostly kids with abilities similar to mental type of abilities that were written about in this book. I think the abilities are done well and I loved seeing new psychic abilities and how they worked. That is probably my favorite aspect of this book.
The story over all was good and interesting. Starting out as a murder mystery and quickly turning into a conspiracy. The story's direction was a bit predictable and the conspiracy was done well but not great. The predictability was mostly on seeing incoming tropes. Like a handsome young man comes into the picture, of course an instant connection is going to form. I will say there is no insta-love, but the characters liking one another did happen quickly. I enjoyed it though.
The characters were good but I felt they lacked something. More depth. They all have great personalities and have their own voices but it felt like we never really got to know them. Anna the main character was really good. She's strong and never stops fighting. I also enjoyed the fact that she has an actually friendship with a guy. She does see him more as a brother but still its nice to see. Molly was great too. She was also strong and very smart. You get to know Molly and Anna but I still feel that there is a lot more to learn of Anna. More about her past and her friendships with Deo and Kelsey.
The writing was also pretty good. It reads very well and is easy to follow and imagine whats going on. The pacing and reveals were just right. There were a few times when sentences felt like they jumped, like Deo asking for a sandwich and finishing it as someone walks through the door all in the same sentence. Maybe its just me but it did bother me a little bit. The ending was good too. I appreciate endings that don't always end in cliffhangers.
Over all I liked this book and will continue one with this series. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading it. Definitely worth a read.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and their voices were strong throughout, no one broke character to fit the storyline. The romance was just enough without being a gushy unbelievable thing, good bad guys and interesting enough plot to keep you turning pages.

Review published at Love Literature Art and Reason book review blog.

I haven’t read the Chronos novels by Walker, but I have heard pretty good things about it. I requested The Delphi Effect based on the synopsis, but also knowing the author’s other books are widely liked. I figured it was bound to be as awesome as it sounded. Fortunately, I made a good decision! I enjoyed The Delphi Effect quite a bit. It was a great blend of ghosts, abilities, and government conspiracies. I enjoyed the plot and I had fun reading the book.

Anna was a likable character who had a difficult life. She had a strange ability that she tried to keep under control. She could talk to ghosts, but not like, all of the time. Basically, she was a vessel that ghosts could hitch a ride on, but she could control it enough to avoid a full blown possession. She had a friend in the foster system that she was super loyal to and a great doctor who actually believed her. And she kept her life under as much control as she could.. Until Molly.

Molly’s ghost hitched a ride and kept insisting that Anna tell her grandfather about it. She was murdered and she knew who did it and it was important enough for her to urge Anna to get involved. Against her better judgement, Anna complied and entered into a crazy whirlwind of danger, the paranormal, and government testing.

I loved the characters, especially the ones Anna got to meet after Porter finally believed her. She wasn’t as alone as she may have thought.

The Delphi Effect was the perfect book to lead me into fall reading since it wasn’t an outright horror, but it was certainly full of ghosts, a bit of gore, and an adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat. And even a little bit a romance peppered in. Slightly. I definitely recommend it and I’m eager to check out the other trilogy from the author now.

An interesting twist on the idea of people who can communicate with the dead. The main character is stubbornly independent to the point of frustration at several points throughout the story- refusing the help of others and naively cooperating much too willingly with the antagonists. But she does show a slow progress in this area which I hope will continue throughout the rest of the series. While the narrator enunciates to the point of sounding robotic at times, over all she did a great job differentiating between the characters.
