Really good writing, a little repetitive, but gives peasant vibes so strongly. I want more peasant vibe books

*3.5 stars

Reread this today, after pulling it to look up a quote. I had forgotten how unsympathetic the midwife is in this - she spends pretty much the entire book treating Alyce with the bare minimum of human decency. Which is both upsetting and entirely plausible, i guess; as a kid, i certainly wasn't surprised by the idea that adults could be capricious and cruel. It's much more upsetting to me now that it was to me-at-thirteen, which is probably a pretty fair commentary on the urge adults have to protect kids from the world.

I read this as a bedtime read aloud with my 8 year old son and 10 year old daughter. While I wouldn't say this was a favorite of theirs, they stayed engaged and never complained when it was storyline.

I really liked it because we also homeschool and are currently wrapping up medieval time period. It's a little dark with orphan kids treated the way you would expect in this time and my daughter was really upset when they almost drowned the cat. But it's also a great look at a peasant village, not lords and knights, and how apprenticeships work.

Skip this if you have sensitive kiddos, but mine were just fine.

Set in Medieval times, this YA book explores themes of dignity and personhood. I read this alone as I'm slowly working my way through Newbery Medal winners that I haven't yet read.

I think this suits perhaps ages 10+? And come on y'all, just because it is called "The Midwife's Apprentice" and has a female main character doesn't mean this is a "girl" book or that our boys shouldn't read it. We'll do this as an audio book or read-aloud at some point.

This was a super quick read and I liked how each chapter kind of felt like itโ€™s own little short story within the larger tale, if that makes any sense. This book is a great portrait of life in the Middle Ages and I learned a lot of interesting things.

I really liked the main character, but my favorite character was the cat. He was the cutest.

Subtle, empowering, and funny too; I want to write books like this! It is about people who are kind, people who are greedy, and those who learn. The entire story is entrenched and enriched by medieval history. Love it just like Karen Cushman's other books.

An orphan girl without a name is taken in by the local midwife in England (?) in the Middle Ages. Another Newberry winner that wasn't that impressive.

A decent story but was a bit surprised it won the Newbery Medal. It is a bit raw in my opinion for young readers, bordering on crude. Simplistic, rather predictable story as well. Has a good moral as far as persevering and not giving up, but not up to the "children's classic" standard I would expect given its Newbery recognition.
