there was a lot of good takeaways for me from this listen. it really had me thinking about how i deal with my traumas and my rough coping skills.

however, much like many of the fellow audiobook reviewers, this listen was a painful few hours. the narration was not of good clarity, almost like she is in a crowded room. the cuts (i think) were so choppy, the lip smacking, ruffling of items close to the mic almost broke me.

also in my opinion, a lot of the cursing felt like cursing just because its cool and edgy rather than anything of substance. thats saying a lot considering i grew up in new jersey and curse like a sailor.

i like how the author tries to speak to the listener like we are a friend, but it just makes the whole narration seem condescending.

was there great elements of this book? absolutely. i would HIGHLY recommend reading over listening.

I don't know, it just got worse as time went on. The best thing about this book is that it's short. But if you're someone who's already been in therapy, it doesn't really offer any new information. Rather, it reinforces what was already learned. This isn't a bad thing, but ultimately it just isn't useful for me personally.

Also, as someone who curses like a sailor, this book can be fucking obnoxious. There's an art to cursing, even in writing! If the added colorful language wasn't so fucking forced, maybe it would be better. I've seen some reviews saying it just reads as an edgy, early 2010s Tumblr post at times and they're right. It does. Harper might have a fancy degree that let's her say "fuck" as many times as she wants (paraphrased from the book) but she doesn't know how to fucking cuss!

Also, to echo other sentiments, the audio quality is shit. This is a home recording (I even heard some interloper in the background at least once) if I ever heard one. If you're listening with headphones, you will be painfully aware of the audio compression and of every bump and scrape.

The good stuff was in the layman's explanations of biological/chemical bodily functions with stress and anxiety, etc.

Again, not a *bad* book, but maybe only useful to a specific demographic.

Great book, it doesn't matter if you feel that you are ok and your life is great or you think Is great; this book will make you understand so many things about how you react, how you feel or simply help you be a better friend or a better person to someone that is going through a hard time. I really really recommend it. As the writer says, you don't have to follow everything, just what works for you. I can't wait to put these things in practice.

DNF; Poor audiobook sound quality

I feel like she dumbed down the information too much. Also, a lot of it was not new info or anything ground breaking. I just felt like she tried too hard to make it like conversational…

Excellent, science-backed information. The excessive profanity is unnecessary.

Solid, no-nonsense, practical adivce.

This book is one I’ve seen but never picked up. I borrowed it as part of the library unlimited copies and I’m so glad I did. I am strongly considering purchasing a copy for myself as well. It is so interesting to me to hear about the cascade of problems that can happen as a result of trauma. It is also interesting to hear alternate definitions of common terms, such as trauma or anxiety. It puts things into a different perspective.
