Such a satisfying ending. Though to be honest I like the anime ending more. It felt more complete.

However, the death scene with L playing chess with Watari was perfect and brought a tear to my eye. I like to think L, Light and Watari all hug it out on the other side.

The plot of this book wasn't as fast-paced as the BB case and the characterisation was less consistent - but it was still an excellent, thrilling, surprising read which I would recommend to any Death Note fan.

Nostalgic is probably the best word I can think of for this book. Would recommend.

Happy reading,

Gem.

If I'm remembering right, this is the novelization of the film sequel to the film adaptation of Death Note the manga. So.

The plot was pretty wild and kinda silly. L's characterization was almost completely pitch perfect, which was really all I wanted from this. It was really fun watching him hang out with "normal" (hahaha sorta) people.

Watari (EDIT) and Matsuda have tiny roles, and Naomi, Raye, Misa, and of course Light are all mentioned, otherwise it's new characters.

Oh boy! Another Death Note related story! How exciting!

...yeah not really. Had I not known of the Death Note universe and really enjoyed the series, I don't think I would've finished this one. I understand that this is set in an alternate universe to the actual series
Spoilersince L is still alive while Kira is dead
, but there were so many confusing bits of information. The words really didn't flow nicely, and I think L's character just doesn't translate well into the written word. It was really hard to keep track of who was who, who was supposed to be the good guy, who was the enemy...I understand that there's some virus thing going on and people are trying to use it to cleanse the world, but why? And I swear that Raye and Naomi had speaking roles in this book, but were supposed to be dead. How does that work. I just don't get it.

This really doesn't add anything to L's character like the BB murder case book did. If anything, it confused his character. L is supposed to be aloof and pretty unemotional. Yet here he is feeling for people? For a little girl? Maki was incredibly annoying, by the way. One minute she's saying she's going to kill someone, the next she's curled up in a ball, crying in her sleep. I just don't like her character.

Apparently this is also a movie? I guess I can see that. I might look into it and see how it compares. Death Note is so much of a visual story, that the movie might actually work out better in this case. The book just dragged on and on, and I wound up skimming through the last few pages just so I could be done with it.

Pretty captivating story. A good alternative continuation to death note.

So this is one of the most difficult books I've had to rate in a while. It was not beautifully written, there were a lot of cliches and confusing translations. You could tell at some points that it was certainly a novelization of an action movie.
But I still cried at the end.

I would not recommend this book to anyone that doesn't love Death Note. Like, really love Death Note. If you want to read a Death Note light novel, I'd go with the BB Murders instead.
The cover is beautiful and honestly it's worth it for the art if you want it to complete the set like I did. While the writing isn't great, the story is kind of a sweet exploration of L in an alternate timeline where he defeated Light and ended the reign of Kira. It is certainly the deepest exploration we ever see of L's character throughout the series. I was excited to see Misa, Matsuda, and the Yagamis back again, even if for only a page or two each.

Maybe it was a bad idea to read this immediately after finishing the manga series. It wasn't as great as I thought it would be. As much as I adore L, this book does him no justice. The writing is sloppy (spelling errors, random scene jumps) and it's hard to visualize everything. That aside, I really love this story. The biggest thing was learning more about L's past, so I'm glad some of that is revealed.
