DELIGHTFULLY FUN AND ENTERTAINING

I was so swept up in this story. Mari and Peter have a bit of a history. When he returns to England after six years, Mari is frustrated that the cause of her social difficulties has landed right in front of her. He's just as irksome as ever. Then end up placing a wager: who can teach a parakeet to speak a new phrase. If she wins, he must apologize on his knees for "accidentally" giving her the title Wayward Welsh. If he wins, he will give her a chaste kiss. They have a playful banter that is overlaid with an almost-sexual tension mixed with annoyance. It is a lot of fun to see them going back and forth in their barbs. I loved seeing in Peter's head and glimpsing the vulnerability and the longing that has been building for six years. He returns to town knowing that he wants Mari, knowing how he wants to shape his career, and knowing that he must find a way to restore the family's title his father has run into serious debt. Mari has spent so much time being boring and proper, that it was fun to see her let loose. She is determined, a listmaker who needs order. She has this longing inside to finally marry and settle into her life. So this was something I think made her easy to relate to. Putting Peter and Mari together is explosive. I loved the tension and seeing them give in to their desires, even in the briefest of moments. In addition to these two, there is a cast of characters that add intrigue and drama to the story. The other suitors were fun, but I was almost disappointed that Ash didn't try harder to win the lady's hand. I would definitely look for other books in the series. For me, this was just an absolute delight to read and I could not put it down.

I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

I received this book from Netgally.

As Rich as a Rogue is the story of Peter, Lord Whitly, and Mari Powel. Lord Whitly once said something mean to Mari, which meant she was shunned by the ton and had to spend the next 6 years clawing her way back into their good graces.

Our story begins when Lord Whitby returns from India. Mari promptly undos all of her hard work by acting like a shrew to Lord Whitby on his first day back in London. For his part, Lord Whitby does not recall a throwaway comment made 6 years earlier. They make a bet to teach a bird a new word, and the loser must apologise to the winner.

Full disclosure: I didn't finish this book. I'm sure some will find it funny and very entertaining, but I found it a contrived. The hurt Mari nurses against Lord Whitby (for 6 years!), the fact that apparently everyone holds Mari's nickname against her, but simultaneously does not remember Whitby ever making the comment, the bet about a bird - it all was just a little bit too ridiculous for me.

Love a second chance enemies to lovers trope!
And this is what I want in an historical— not glorifying the gentry (too much) or colonialism (too much— not perfect but not clueless).
Loveable characters and I’d definitely read more from this author. I hope there’s more in the series too!

Mari has been fighting the Wayward Welsh label since Lord Whitly left six years ago. Now he's back from India and he wants Mari but she wants nothing to do with him. They end up in the middle of a wager she is determined to win. A light, fun read. I really enjoyed this one.

Mmm, it was fun.

I liked it.
I liked Mari's wit, I liked Peter's honesty, I liked Ash's loyalty, I liked it.
I liked the love portion in it, that Peter knew his love and was set to get it, that he loved Mari as a person with thoughts and many facets.
I liked it.

I received an ARC of this story from NetGalley, and I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. There were scenes that I found laugh-out-loud funny, and the characters were compelling. Most important, I believed the love story.

The only thing that pulled me out of the story were some of the terms used to describe female anatomy in the early chapters. When it comes to the female form and love scenes, word choice can be critical. Happily, the more I read of this book the more I enjoyed it and (to my mind) the better the writing got.
