This book is my favourite of the series BY FAR.

The entire story is told while on the set of the third episode of Experiment in Terror and it takes place on D’Arcy island in British Columbia. As a Canadian, I had never heard of this island before, so along with some pine chilling spooks and lots of drama, I also learned some pretty brutal history about my home country!

The ghosts in this book were the scariest so far. THERE WAS A LEPER BABY CRAWLING UP PERRY’S BODY for gods sake! You can’t get much more terrifying than that!

I also really enjoyed the ‘Lord of Flies’ vibes that Perry and Dex had going on. It was very Freudian how over the course of the book, they started to lose their civilization and began relying on their baser instincts (like Perry breaking Dex’s nose!)

I also think Perry & Dex’s relationship developed immensely. They have officially cheated! Like cheated, cheated! It’s really interesting reading [b:The Dex-Files|15746858|The Dex-Files (Experiment in Terror, #5.6)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602889694l/15746858._SY75_.jpg|21437922] alongside the series, because Dex’s perspective really changes the way I see his relationship with Jennifer. From the way he describes it, it is a loveless relationship born of convenience and safety. He doesn’t love Jenn, so he’s save staying with her. He will never devolve into the person he was while he was with Abbie. It’s interesting, but not redeemable enough to make what they’re doing ok. Especially not Perry who’s under the assumption that Dex and Jenn are in love.

I decided to re-read the entire Experiment in Terror series after finding [b:Came Back Haunted|55618050|Came Back Haunted (Experiment in Terror #10)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602886940l/55618050._SY75_.jpg|86734082] (Ada's story) in a bookshop recently.

I knew I enjoyed this series, but I had forgotten just how amazing these books are.

Although the ghost story in [b:Dead Sky Morning|12322385|Dead Sky Morning (Experiment in Terror, #3)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602889226l/12322385._SY75_.jpg|17300620] is as scary as hell. The relationship between Perry and Dex is the focus of this book; in the claustrophobic atmosphere of D’Arcy Island we get to know them much better as people (and not always nice people at that).

I cannot recommend this series enough. Now on to [b:Lying Season|13061289|Lying Season (Experiment in Terror, #4)|Karina Halle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602889388l/13061289._SY75_.jpg|18226704]

I’m embarrassed to admit how much I enjoyed Dead Sky Morning, but the fact is; towards the end I wanted to know what was going to happen and I couldn’t put it down. Granted it was like a bad B movie that would have been right at home on the Creature Double Features of my childhood – but it was actually fairly atmospheric and a little bit genuinely creepy! This time out Perry and Dex are filming an Experiment in Terror episode on a deserted island off the coast of British Columbia. D’Arcy Island or The Island of Death – as it is affectionately monikered; was a dumping ground, excuse me – “remote colony” for Chinese lepers at the turn of the century. While the island isn’t very far off shore, rip tides make it fairly unreachable – hard to get on, hard to get off – the perfect place to dump people you plan to have die there. Rumor has it the island is haunted. Campers that have been on the island were plagued by “strange occurrences” and most don’t stay overnight. Naturally Dex and Perry are planning a weekend Sojourn.

I enjoyed the story despite that I am not liking either Perry or Dex as individuals any better – and thus really have no investment in their eventual relationship; other than strictly for “Oh look! A train wreck” entertainment. I’m actually cutting Perry a little more slack because she is young (by today’s standards). She’s just turning 23 – which I juxtapose to my personal experience of 23 - which involved being fully independent, married, working full time and self-sufficient; so, I really can’t respect her when in response to a disagreement with her parents she seriously contemplates “systematically trashing her bedroom and putting a hole in the wall”. Nothing says “treat me like an adult” like the willful destruction of someone else’s property. I know that her Dad is forbidding her to continue with the show - but get your grown ass out of the house and it won’t be a problem. I am however cutting her slack because she sees ghosts, and they talk to her cryptically and try to kill her and THAT can’t be easy.

Dex on the other hand, I am not feeling like cutting any slack. He’s 32. He’s old enough to know better; and he’s selfishly playing both Perry and his live-in girlfriend Jenn – and people are getting hurt. His reasoning doesn’t matter. He’s simply too old to – if not have his shit together – be so self-involved that he doesn’t consider the potential consequences of his actions. In this episode the inappropriate flirting continues and careens well over the line into inappropriate behavior. Of course, Perry expects him to leave Jenn – which doesn’t seem to be happening. She excuses her own behavior with the belief that Dex really doesn’t want to be with Jenn and isn’t happy…however again, grown adults can generally figure shit out – it’s not like they’ve been married for years and have their finances and all other aspects of their lives intertwined.

Aside from lots of flirting and inappropriate sexy times, Dex and Perry also succumb to the atmosphere of the island and there are lots of moments of suspicion, distrust and outright animosity towards each other as the spirits of the island pit them against each other. We learn a bit more about each of them – in terms of Perry’s abilities and both their pasts.

As Dex says about the anonymous internet posters insulting Perry on the show’s blog (calling her fat, ugly and talentless; FYI – we also get confirmation that her weight problem is in her head); “Haters gonna hate” – and Experiment in Terror is becoming a pretty addictive series with the couple you (or at least I) love to hate.

This story, like book 1, felt incomplete… or maybe I just like when stories have a full conclusion. Did they go back for all their equipment? What is to become of the ghosties and why are they so hell bent on keeping them on the island? I have so many questions!

Let’s see is any are addressed in the next book.

Dead Sky Morning didn't get me going nearly as much as Red Fox did. There was just something about the cruelty and meanness in this book between Perry and Dex that I didn't like. I understand why it was important, but I was uncomfortable reading about it because it's clear that both of them have such deep feelings for each other, and they eviscerated each other on that island. It just made me feel sorry for them because it won't be easy to forget the things that were said, and the things that happened. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars because of that.

This book was intense.

The characters are such a huge part of this series and we get to know more about them. More of Dex and Perry's personal story and life. It was so touching and sometimes even heartbreaking. Dead Sky Morning is about emotions. A lot. These characters are so interesting. Not only Perry and Dex. I also really love Ada, I hope we will see more of her in the next books.

The part on the island. I didn't even know anymore. Everything started going wrong, but it was different from the other two books. They could only rely on each other this time, but I could feel that something was off with the both of them. The island really did a number on them, and as a result you're left wondering what is true and what is not. Wondering if they're going to go against each other. That was so well done. It was not obvious, but subtle, like little reactions at first. And then it all escalated and the last part of the book was the most intense part. Really well done.

Dex and Perry. Seeing them grow as individuals but also together was one my favourite thing about Dead Sky Morning. I can feel that there is still so much to know about them, but I am glad we are not given everything right away. After what they went through on the island, I am curious to see how things change again.

Another great book from this series.
