THE SEX LIVES OF AFRICAN WOMEN by NANA DARKOA SEKYIAMAH

This book is a nonfiction account of the sex lives of multiple African women; most of whom are part of the LGBTQ+ community. I really enjoyed this experience and it was fascinating to read about the ways different women find sexual pleasure.

I recommend this if you felt Three Women by Lisa Taddeo was a little too white and straight. But I also recommend it if you enjoyed the Taddeo and want to read more in that vain (or is it vein?)

Anyway, happy reading!

KLARA AND THE SUN by KAZUO ISHIGURO

This book started off so beautifully. I was fully invested in Klara the AF (artificial friend) and really enjoyed watching her develop. I loved the fact that Ishiguro never once patronised his reader and never supplied any information unless it felt natural in conversation; no over the top, shoe horned explanations. He simply told the story and it was up to the reader to pay attention and to be patient enough to wait for the answers. This gave it the effect of a real page-turner!

There was a flip side to this type of storytelling and that is that I constantly felt like I was missing something that I should have known. If only I’d trusted Ishiguro’s process and understood that I knew everything that he wanted me to know when I knew it.

After finishing the novel, I was still left with unanswered questions, but I’m not mad about that. I think it’s nice to read books that don’t tie everything up into a neat bow.

Reading has massively slowed down over the past few months and I’m looking forward to reading a lot more in the new year. But I am glad I finished this one before the end of the month.

SURVIVING HOME by KATERINA CANYON

Ad-PR thanks to @ for sending me this collection of poetry in exchange for an honest review.

This collection is brutal and raw and honest. Every word hurts a little more than the last. This poet/narrator has been through a lot as a Black girl/woman living in America. In this collection Canyon explores how it feels to be the daughter of drug addicts and abusers, how it feels to grow up as a Black woman in a racist country, how it feels to be so poor that you experience the horror of homelessness as a child.

If you enjoy accessible poetry with hard-hitting themes, then this is a great collection for you.

SNAPDRAGON by KAT LEYH

Have you ever bought a book for someone as a gift and then read it yourself before you wrapped it? 👀 I, obviously, would never do such a thing, but when the mischievous people at @mrbsemporium recommended that I do so, I couldn’t not take their professional advice…

So I read Snapdragon and it’s so frickin cute! Imagine all the stuff we love about graphic novels, then add some LGBTQ+ themes and some witchery and there you have this awesome book that can be enjoyed by people of all ages!

Can’t wait to see what my niece thinks of this!

VAGABONDS by ELOGHUSA OSUNDE

‘Vagabonds’ refers to the queer and displaced people of Nigeria. Our spirit guide, Tatafo, tells us stories about various ‘vagabonds’ throughout the country and the hidden lives they must live.

This book is full of so much love and hope. It discusses current laws in Nigeria that cause so much pain for marginalised people, mostly from the queer community, but also young girls who are abused or kidnapped, and shows how difficult it is for people to live happily and safely.

This book was extraordinary and totally original. When Akwaeke Emezi recommends a book, you know it’s going to be good.

This is a must read queer, spiritual, Nigerian book and you’ll regret it if you don’t read it. It comes out at the end of March 2022, so get your preorders in now.

Thanks to @mattclacher and @4thestatebooks for this review copy. You’ve made my year! Ad-PR.

THE FELL by SARAH MOSS

Guys, this is seriously good covid-19 literary fiction; a brand new genre! I didn’t think I would be up for reading about lockdown when it’s still so raw, but after reading Burntcoat, I realised it’s actually quite cathartic. I recognise that this won’t be the same for everyone, but I really enjoyed this.

It’s ultimately quite a sad little book, but Moss is a genius so it’s all handled beautifully.

If you enjoyed SUMMERWATER, then you’ll really like this as well.

P.S. I read this in November but I’m late posting my review.

MEMORIAL by BRYAN WASHINGTON

An intense study of a relationship on the rocks. It’s one of those books where you just really want all the characters to sit down together and get everything out in the open. But that is not how real life works and that is why this book has been celebrated as a great piece of literature. Some books make that heart-to-heart conversation seem so easy, but for many people it’s incredibly tough and tense and uncomfortable, and Washington has conveyed that beautifully. The only issue with that is that it sometimes makes for a difficult read, but isn’t it great when a writer can control your emotions so effortlessly?!

Big fan of this writer and I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for his future releases.

THE WIFE OF WILLESDEN by ZADIE SMITH

Zadie’s first play! This was absolutely brilliant. So funny, so energetic; it pretty much came off the page and performed itself before me!

Loved it so much.

STILL LIFE by SARAH WINMAN

It would be difficult to call this book anything other than epic.

Spanning decades, this novel comes alive in on the streets of Florence. The weather, the food, the art, the drink, the people; this is what makes Florence Florence. And this is a writer who understands Italy and Italians. Winman has achieved something quite special in these pages.

I will admit that I enjoyed the opening of this novel, but it wasn’t until I was a quarter of the way through that this book really started to shine. Perhaps that’s because of the large cast of characters that one has to get to know well first. But by the end, even Col was a hit with me.

There’s something so beautifully sad about this book and, although I’ve only spent about 2 weeks with these characters, I feel as though I’ve been with them for years.

I recommend this if you want to read something that will consume you for the foreseeable future.
