SYNOPSIS:
Callie is a runner. One day she finds herself running to her house in the middle of a marathon and straight to her kitchen where she pulls out a kitchen knife and cuts herself. Now Callie is in Sea Pines, a treatment facility where she refuses to talk, to everyone including her own family. But Callie can only stay silent for so long....

REVIEW:
At first the book had me wondering what could have possibly happened to make Callie the way she is, a cutter who refuses to talk. As the story progresses, the problems start to come out one by one and you realize all the pressure and issues she had going on. When I was reading the author sucked me in so much that when someone would talk to me I felt like I couldn't talk, until my brain finally realizes that I'm not reading anymore. I knocked off a few stars because as the book came closer to being over it still didn't seem like it was going anywhere. I was kinda disappointed about the ending.

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
Since this book talks about certain conditions, I would probably recommend it to those 13 and over. Recommended to those that enjoy psychological novels

SYNOPSIS:
Something is wrong with Isabelle Lee. She often finds her mother crying at night because the sudden death of her father and now has turned to binging and purging in order to cope with the loss. When her little sister catches her and tells her mother, Isabelle is forced to go to group therapy. One day Isabelle is shocked when she finds that Ashley Burnham, the prettiest and most popular girl in school is also dealing with an eating disorder. Isabelle soon starts to realize that just because your beautiful on the outside, doesn't mean every aspect in your life is "perfect".

REVIEW:
The story itself was interesting, it's the perspective that drew me away. Isabelle is a selfish and, quite frankly annoying character. She doesn't care about her best friends who she grew up with as long as she gets to hang out with the "popular kids" because she believes it will make everything better. She's often mean to her sister who for the most part is quite nice to her. If Isabelle really wanted to be mean to someone it should be her mother who was also a really frustrating character. She was always crying out loud at night, not even caring if her kids can hear her, she was never strong for her children. Isabelle who is only 13 and her little sister April who was only 10 were taking care of themselves and often taking care of their mother. The mom just didn't seem to realize that she wasn't the only one dealing with the loss, her kids were to. Other than these 2 characters, the story had a very good message to it, it teaches a person to not assume they know someone just because they look a certain way. Never judge a book by it's cover.

RECOMMENDED TO:
I recommend this story to whoever judges a person by the way they look because appearances can be deceiving. This story has real problems teens face so I suggest it to those who are 12 and over.

The Secret Soldier: The Story of Deborah Sampson by Ann McGovern

SYNOPSIS:
The Secret Soldier tells the story of Deborah Sampson, a woman who always wanted to travel but never had any money. She knows that the army travels so she dresses up as a man so she can join the army, where women aren't aloud. But what happens if they find out her secret?

REVIEW:
This review contains some historical events throughout the book that had appeared in Deborah's lifetime. Everything all happens so quick, that you don't feel like your reading a book, you feel like your reading a short summary. No time for details, thoughts from the character, it was just ridiculous.

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
Recommended to children, age rating: 7 and over.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

SYNOPSIS:
Most books do not begun at the end, but "the five people you meet in heaven" is no ordinary book. It begins with Eddie's last day on earth, he clocks in at work, rides some of the attractions, makes pipe cleaner animals for the children, and then before you know it, its time for Eddie to die. A ride called "Freddy's free fall" collapses on Eddie as he is trying to save a small child. He awakes in heaven where he finds out that their are five people waiting to tell him why his life turned out to be the way it was. The five people chosen are the five people that made the biggest impact in your life. Who will Eddie's five people be? Did Eddie save the child?

REVIEW:
This book was very touching and it told a wonderful story about Eddie. With each lesson Eddie learned it was a lesson the reader could learn as well. This book had a wonderful moral, it taught me that everyone plays an important role in the world whether we acknowledge it or not. Although the book was very intriguing and moving, there were some parts that made me doze off so for that I give "the five people you meet in heaven" By: Mitch Albom 4 out of 5 stars.

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
This book doesn't really have curse words but it does contain violence and some pretty brutal scenes so keep that in mind if your buying this book for a child. I recommend this book to those who ever feel like they play no important role in life, remember that you are important.

SYNOPSIS:
"Tweak" is a true story about meth addiction. We follow Nic Sheff, a 21 year old boy who falls into a great addiction. After months of working at a Sober Living clinic, Nic is done with his addiction, or so he thought... Soon he finds himself on the streets of San Francisco begging to get his hands on drugs. Soon Nic destroys everything that he had going for him: His relationship with his family, his job, even his relationship with all his friends. When Nic reaches rock bottom will he finally realize that enough is enough?

REVIEW:
"Tweak" was such an inspring true story. For anyone that wanted to try meth, they'll think twice after reading this book. Along the way we meet Zelda, Nic's first love, and thats when he begins to really frustrate me. I'm not going to give anything away so I'll leave it at that. Zelda was an annoying character who claimed she loved Nic but never once tried to help him and lets face it: That is not real love. Other than that, the book was amazingly written and very realistic. It can get a bit heavy but what can you except with a book about a meth addict right? Nic's views of the world begin very pessimistically but you can notice that bits of progress along the way. He describes things so vividly, including his thoughts, 4 out of 5 stars!!!

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
Obviously this book should only be read by kids who who are at least 16 because of all the cursing, the sex, and obviously the drugs. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever done or thought about doing drugs, this will make ya think again!!!

SYNOPSIS:
This book is a true story about a girl who finds herself trapped in a world full of drugs. At first the main character is a good student and a wonderful daughter but after getting a cup with LSD in it at a party, her life becomes a downward spiral and eventually becomes complete chaos.

REVIEW:
At the beginning of the novel I felt like I related a lot to the main character, I felt that her personality was similar to mine and to a lot of other teenagers. She has certain thoughts that we think, certain feelings that we have, and just like a lot of teenagers, she's curious. Even after she started getting sucked into drugs she still seemed like a nice person who truly didn't want to hurt her family. Over the course of the book her life becomes very chaotic and I feel so bad for her, especially how he felt as if no one was there for her and she had no one to talk to except her diary. It's a very detailed, deep, and often dark tale and you really get to know who this girl is without even knowing her name. You begin to feel for her, you begin to think of her as like a friend. This novel was amazing but I was very sad about the epilogue, I just felt like the last sentence in it wasn't fair and wasn't right to have put in there but I'm not going to give anything away so your going to have to read the book yourself to understand why I felt that way and what it is.

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
This is a very dark book so I recommend it to those who are 14 and over and who are okay with reading "heavy" books.

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

Go to review page

4.0

SYNOPSIS:
Fifty Shades was originally written as a fan fiction of twilight, when I found this out I was intrigued but it wasn't until my mother in law recommended it that I actually picked it up. It tells the story of Anastasia Steele, a young woman fresh out of college who interviews Christian Grey, a rich billionaire and CEO of Grey Enterprises. Anastasia has never been attracted to a man until she lays eye's upon the beautiful Christian Grey. He returns his feelings and pretty soon Anastasia finds himself in his apartment where Christian has a secret, a secret that may be a little to much for Anastasia to handle...

REVIEW:
Fifty shades of grey is fifty shades of naughty! The first day when I picked it up I read quite a lot but then when it came time to all the err... sexual activity it became a bit unbearable and there were times when I had to put the book down... for a few days. It started to feel more like a porno then a romance novel. The other thing that bothered me a bit was how Anastasia had never found a man attractive, a woman of 22 years of age. Of course its not impossible but it is highly unlikely to happen in real life so it made that story a little unrealistic. Other than that it was a great read and tells a great story which is why I give fifty shades of grey 4 out of 5 stars. (I would have given it 3 1/2 but there are no halves here =(

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
Obviously this book is for mature audiences only. I recommend this book to those that like to read fan fiction and to those that read penthouse books (hahaha)

Abandon by Meg Cabot

In this twisted modern tale of the myth of Hades and Persephone, Pierce Oliviera isn't your ordinary 17 year old girl; for one she's died and see what really happens when one has passed on. After being kicked out of her old school, Pierce and her mother move to Isla Huesos, a small island off the coast of Florida to make a new start to bad for Pierce its hard to make a new start since the man who tricked her into staying with him in the underworld follows her around. It also doesn't help that she still has the color changing diamond necklace he gave to her around her neck.

For a very long time now, I have found the tale of Hades and Persephone to be very intriguing so when I began reading this book, I couldn't help but get addicted to it almost immediately after starting it. It kept me intrigued, wanting to know what is going to happen next. You wonder why this? What happened? and can't help but flip page after page (it also doesn't help how Meg Cabot ends all her chapters in this book with a cliff hanger), so I guess that's what made it so interesting, but when it gets toward the end and everything unfolds so fast instead of taking its time, the story began to grow dull and somewhat predictable (not to mention it started to remind me a little of another book I read which I listed below in the 'you'll love section'). Not to mention the ending (which I will REFUSE to spoil) was kind of a disappointment. I honestly had high hopes for this book (especially considering Meg Cabot is my favorite author and has written so many books in which I have enjoyed) and as I was reading I thought I was not going to be let down, but sadly I was. Not necessarily recommending this to anyone, but if you want to try it, give it a go.

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

SYNOPSIS:
Hex Hall opens up with Sofie at her High School prom. She steps into the bathroom and hears crying inside one of the stalls. By the sound of it, Sofie knows that it's Felicia, a girl from school who is constantly being bullied. Sofie, being the sweet girl that she is tries to help Felicia. Although witches are not supposed to use magic in the presence of humans, Sofie decides that this is an emergency situation and that Felicia truly needs help. So she tells Felicia to picture who she wants as a prom date, it could be anyone. Felicia tells her she wants Kevin who is apparently the school's heart throb. When Sofie performs the spell, Kevin comes crashing into the hall with his truck screaming out Felicia's name. Panicked, everyone runs out of the hall. When teachers step into investigate, Felicia yells out "It was Sofie, she's a witch!". This incident soon sends her to Hecate Hall, an isolated reform school for Prodigium (witches, warlocks, shape-shifters, faeries, etc.) who have exposed themselves to Humans. This is where Sofie finds out the real danger's of exposing herself to a human. An ancient alliance called "The Eye" who's mission is to take down all prodigium, especially her. On her first week of school Sofie manages to have the only student vampire (and most hated person in school) as her roommate, become the popular girl's number one enemy, have a ghost follow her, have a huge crush on a warlock, piss off the toughest teacher, and have detention for the rest of the semester. If things couldn't get any worse, a mysterious predator soon starts attacking student's, leaving puncture wounds on it's victims and Sofie's roommate and only friend is the number one suspect.

REVIEW:
Hex Hall was an amazing novel. The beginning captivated me immediately but when Sofie arrives at Hex Hall, the novel slowly began to draw me away. When I hit page 164 thats when the story started unraveling itself and my eyes were glued to the book. I didn't put it down till I flipped the last page. There were so many twists and turns, and when the mystery of "Who done it" exposes itself, I was SHOCKED! Then all these events started popping out at the reader, things the reader surely doesn't expect and I loved every minute of it! I found myself gasping out loud! That's how much the novel got to me! The love interest was amazing, you can see how things progress and it's not just "bam! I hate you, oh wait, Bam! I'm in love". You can see how the chemistry builds between the two character's, it wasn't rushed. I enjoyed the novel very much and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel!
The only reason why I'm knocking one star off is because I was constantly thinking about Harry Potter while I was reading this novel, you can see a lot of similarities.

RECOMMENDED TO:
Anyone who ever thought it would be awesome to be a witch and/or have magical powers.

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

SYNOPSIS:
It's time for the very famous Miss Teen Dream Beauty Pageant! 50 beautiful contestants are on their way to the pageant when the unexpected happens! The plane crashes and the girls land on a deserted island, leaving them to fend for themselves! Yet these beauty queens do not give up hope and keep practicing for their upcoming pageant. But what happens when the hot pirates from America's popular show show up?

REVIEW:
Bray's 'Beauty Queens' was extremely well put together! When I began reading this book these girls were so obnoxious and fit directly into "the beauty queen' stereotype! Along the way you start to see deeper into each of the girl's lives and you realize that they each have their own personality, they're deeper than a stereotype and thats when it hit me! Libba Bray very cleverly did this on purpose! She made the readers judge these girls out of first impressions which is what we do in everyday life, an amazing moral cleverly disguised! This book was written to play out like a made for tv movie and it was like something I've ever read before. Unfortunately a few of these girls constantly annoyed me and the story didn't grasp my attention to much until about the last 40 pages, 3 out 5 stars!
