I started a year ago, and once I wanted to get more serious I decided to start a more practical book. That one made me give up, made me feel I was to blame, and made me feel more horrible about my situation than what I already was.

This year I decided to start again with this book, and I realised that other book was to blame. This book really made me think, and I hope it has thought me some valuable techniques to when I'm getting worse.
Furthermore, it made me think and consider other people around me and communication, in an unexpected but very valuable way.

I did not read the last chapters 19,20,21 since they were specific to antidepressants, which at the current moment are not in my plan.

I really recommend anyone to read this, even if not depressed. It gives valuable techniques that can be used for just when you are angry or sad, and not just for when depressed.

"There is a kind of genius about depression. Patients can be so incredibly persuasive about their hopelessness that even their doctors and families may start believing them after a while.... No matter what type of treatment you receive, faith and persistence can be the keys to success."

Wowee took me so long to finish because I was making thorough notes and he does repeat himself fairly often but I had to read to check. Overall though, such amazing range of cognitive techniques & a refreshing clarity of expression that helped throughout! Hopefully use all these techniques for getting better permanently

I am embarrassed about loving a self-help book, but I do.

This book is brilliant. Practical advice and steps to help you control your own thoughts.
Even if you think you are in full control of your own mind it will probably be interesting to you as it gives you some idea of how cognitive therapy works and why it is so much more effective than everything that came before.

I don't think he's right about every feeling you have being brought about by your thoughts but, regardless of that, controlling them can only be useful.

“Feeling Good” by Dr. David Burns embodies one of the biggest breakthroughs in the treatment of mood disorders especially depression. It is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which offers active solutions to why depression occurs and how to lift the dark curtains of hopelessness. One of the main arguments made is that your feelings and emotions are the direct consequence of cognitions (thoughts) and several distortions such as all or nothing thinking, fortune-teller thinking, overgeneralization, dismissing the good and blowing negative out of proportions, emotional reasoning etc. result in depression. I felt a great sense of relatability to it. Often, we are trapped in negative thoughts which make us feel miserable and because it feels real, we take it as a reality which is false.
Certain methods to enhance the mood are described along with why it is so, the method that I saw repetitive in different forms was the double column method in which on one hand you write you immediate thoughts, I repeat, thoughts not feelings and then you counter them step wise to peel of the layers of depression and show the illogic of such demeaning and defeating thoughts in light. It works best to write them down.
This book is certainly recommended for those who have an episode of depression or anxiety. It has very effective tools for self-help, but again professional help is greatly emphasized. One a personal note, what I felt that Pakistan should have more psychotherapists and professional help should be available and easily accessible which it is not. There are no effective helplines or centers which provide substantial professional support and the stigma that surrounds it is intense. However, I found this book quite good and is highly recommended.

This book is heavy and the information is fast and furious in the delivery. I often started it then stopped because it was a lot of info to take in. As someone who has anxiety, I found some of the information really hit home while other information didn't apply as much. I do feel I got something from it and would recommend to others to read. The real work it what happens after though.
