Reminded me of The Social Animal by David Brooks, which equally I didn't love.

Although, I liked this more.

Also, some great lessons too!

Läsaren får inte bara grundläggande vetskap om KBT - dess framkomst och funktion - utan också konkreta arbetssätt och enkla metoder att använda i sitt eget livs mörka stunder.

This helps a small set of ego-based problems, such as worrying that people look down on you when they aren't.

But the author encourages applying it to all situations, including "deciding not to feel hurt" if you are in an abusive relationship or the victim of injustice.

It had an example of a woman being abused and cheated on. The author mentored her to smile and praise her abusive husband. She was never allowed to challenge him. Through subservience, she got him to leave his mistress. The author used this as a role model.

The author says there is no absolute justice. So if you suffer something you consider injust (e.g. sexism, racism), you are supposed to realize there is no such thing as justice. There is only what society agreed to. Then you use his techniques to "decide not to feel hurt".

This seems like a tactic for oppressors to continue harming others and expect victims to decide not to feel hurt.

The book is helpful in one narrow category (ego problems) but harmful behind that.

I write this as someone with no background in psychology or CBT, and as someone who has not yet been able to find a therapist in my area.
I finished my final year of undergrad, wanting to kill myself by the end since I had no future plans and had somehow convinced myself that that made me a worthless sack of shit. Which of course wasn’t true, but I wouldn’t listen to anyone who told me. A friend who also suffers from depression recommended this book to me and since it was only $10, I went out and bought it. What a great decision.
It took some time, but the book really did help me break down my shitty thoughts, and once I accepted that even if I had failed I still had worth, I began to recover. It’s got lots of do-it-yourself exercises to help with a range of issues- I didn’t do all of them, but I chose the ones I thought would help me the most. And they did. Once I was able to stop beating myself up and stop listing nonsensical reasons why I couldn’t get out of bed, wash my hair, eat, or do things I enjoyed, I felt a lot better.
I still turn to the exercises in here when I am having a rough day or week, or even just some rough thoughts. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has suffered from depression, particularly the kind like mine which was largely situational.
Overall, I’m just really glad I read this book.

I'm on the fence about this book. The audiobook wasn't as helpful as a book would have been since mine didn't have the pdf extensions so I missed a lot of context. The content itself sometimes made me angry, sometimes seemed reasonable and kind of hopeful. Overall I don't regret reading it and plan to loan a copy from my library to look through stuff missing from audiobook.
